Silliest place you’ve seen a dog owner take their dog

To ask where the silliest / most inappropriate place you’ve seen a dog taken by the owner

Inspired by recent posts complaining about dogs being everywhere in cafes etc

Yesterday in our local Cathedral Easter service , a dog was taken up to the altar for communion with its owners. I’ve seen it all now 😃
I was unfortunately unable to see if they attempted to snaffle a bit of bread for the dog , but it honestly wouldn’t have surprised me
Just why ?

Also I make jewellery and have a stall at events. The amount of dogs that have jumped up at the table and knocked things over is ridiculous. The owner either does not apologise at all or i get a little titter of a laugh from the owner who then says something like “oh what a rascal” 😡
3 times now I have had stuff broken and once I had a whole rotating stand knocked over and my stuff went everywhere. The owner beats a hasty retreat while I tried to rescue everything. I had to abandon the fair as everything on that stand was at the best muddy and at the worst broken. I very nearly gave up after that.

Why is mumsnet suddenly anti dog?

It's always been anti-dog. And anti-cat.

It's bizarre as it's not something I've ever seen in real life.

we have had dogs at family funerals, it was lovely to see the dog there.

Saw someone put their dog in the trolley at b&q yesterday, on a blanket, the staff turned a blind eye…I’m not sure that was an issue tbh, no food involved.

but a dog at a fireworks display I thought was madness.

we took our dog into a cute little old church yesterday, we were just going past on a walk and they were having an Easter open day with people to explain the history of it. I said, oh we can’t because of the dog, and they said, oh you can we’ve got dog treats. Popped in and left a donation after an interesting talk….they know their market.

Dogs are allowed in B&Q. Quite often see them in our local one (DH goes there a lot for work materials)

I live a popular tourist destination and go to a hotel nearby that has a kids playroom that they allow locals to use out of season if you buy something from their cafe. A lady brought her muddy dog in there not on a lead and then got annoyed that my 2 year old kept wanting to stroke it... I tried to keep her away but she did stroke it and it snapped at my DD (who was gentle I will add).

She looked completely perplexed when I said it was inappropriate for the dog to be in there, let alone when it didn't like young children.

I haven’t seen that on here though. Which is what the op referred to

Unfortunately I have many times over the last few days.

Some of it is subtle, some of it less so.

I love dogs but I don’t want them in supermarkets or coffee shops unless they’re a registered guide dog for the blind or deaf.

What about medical alert dogs? Those who alert about potential seizures etc?

JasmineAllen · 21/04/2025 08:49

John Lewis and it wasn't any sort of support dog either.

Iloveeastereggs2020 · 21/04/2025 08:49

Funeral, three in attendance, the owners weren’t particularly close to the family or person who died either. They could have easily not attended.

I hate dogs in cafes. There is nothing worse than sitting down having a coffee and a bite to eat and find someone’s dog sniffing around your table. There are so many selfish dog owners who appear not to understand that many people not only don’t share their love of their dog but actively detest them.

I hate anti-dog people in dog friendly cafes. There’s nothing worse than sitting down with my well behaved dog in a cafe that welcomes dogs and having someone turn their nose up. There’s are so many selfish dog haters who appear not to understand that many people - and cafe owners - don’t share their hate of dogs but actively love them and want to enjoy spending time with them.

Disneyworld. Last week, one of their busiest times of the year. Dog was harnessed as a service dog (but not a breed im familiar with having specific support capabilities). Was 33 degrees and the dog had on croc-like shoes.

Just because you can take a service dog, doesn't mean you should...

waltzingparrot · 21/04/2025 08:52

Saw a dog on the Tube the other day. Didn't think they'd be allowed. Woman had it in a large bag on her knee. It was quite a long journey too and of course I spent the whole journey wondering where it would go to the loo if caught short and who would have to clean it up.

Service dogs are essential for many people to live their lives.

Or are you suggesting that people with medical needs or disabilities shouldn't be allowed to attend places like Disneyworld?

HelenWheels · 21/04/2025 08:53

i am taking my dog on the tube soon,
needs must

i have seen dogs on the tube

Sammysquiz · 21/04/2025 08:53

I was in a tiny little gift shop this weekend and a mum, dad and two teenage kids brought their massive Great Dane in. Nobody could get past it, it took up practically half the floor space available, and they were just smiling indulgently at it when it knocked stuff off with its tail. Why wouldn’t one of them wait outside with it??!

cleanasawhistle · 21/04/2025 08:54

I went to a wedding where one dog was the best man and the other was a bridesmaid.

Dogs have always been allowed on the tube.

National Trust Easter trail this weekend. Ruined the activities, scared the children and meant all parents had to be on high alert. Oh, but he’s friendly, wailed the incompetent owner…

Coffeeishot · 21/04/2025 08:55

Dog coming out of a changing room of a Fatface in Cornwall! It didn't bother me just surprised me,

People in real life aren't going to approach you to tell you they don't like dogs though are they? That would be wierd. They are probably thinking it though.

Defender90 · 21/04/2025 08:56

Not taking them somewhere, but last weekend I passed someone driving a camper van with a small dog sat on their lap. I know nobody thinks they’ll be in an accident but take precautions in case you are.

I think the anti-cat element here is a fairly small minority. (usually garden related).
To he fair I don't tend to take my cats shopping or have them accompany me to restaurants and cafes.

Always lots of dogs on the Underground. If you live in London and need to get around then it’s probably better than the bus. Mostly see smaller dogs but yesterday DD and I saw a man carrying an enormous dog on the escalator, was quite amusing.

Dogs are allowed on most public transport in the UK, free on the tube and train, some bus companies actually have a ticket for dogs, most are also free though, some coaches allow them but not National Express. I used to take my dog on holiday travelling by train, it’s a 2 hour journey and she never went to the toilet . I think most people leave their animals at home for longer that that and don’t expect them to wee or poo!

But in real-life you don’t know what people are thinking. So when you’re in a cafe with your dog, unless somebody actually speaks up, you’ve got no idea if everyone else is thinking ‘I wish that dog wasn’t in here’.

I love dogs but I do think the number of thoughtless owners has increased.
