to not understand why Christians think Jesus died for our sins?

switcheroooo · 20/04/2025 10:06

If Jesus died for everyone's sins, does that mean people are not accountable for their actions? You can kill people, steal and lie but have a protected status because Jesus died for your sins.

How does this work? Why are people not responsible for their own sins? Where is the justice?

Erm…he did.

I thought this was the original sin that meant he had to sacrifice his son? So the rules said he could not forgive them and had to make up for it somehow?

I was brought up in a deeply religious household, very mainstream, not culty and although I don't believe now one of the things that stuck with me is how people should always try to be better. Sounds a bit vague, but I think it's about reflecting on what you do and thinking about what could be better. It doesn't mean what you did was awful ( if it wasn't something cruel or criminal) but just could it be a bit better, a bit kinder, a bit more generous maybe. Years later I did a management course which was all about continuous improvement and thought woah, bit like church then 😂 I don't believe in an afterlife because that doesn't seem likely. I suppose I believe you should go through life trying hard so when you are dying you can think, ok, didn't do too bad a job all in all.

A decent human being should try and be a kind and generous person. I don’t see that being solely a characteristic of anyone who is religious. There are good religious people and bad non believers and vice versa.

How do you pay for everything in life? You work and expect nothing in return? You do it just because of altruism? Then you are in a very fortunate position.

I do not work for free for my employer. I get paid on the condition I do my job.

I do what I can, where I can, if I won the euromillions I’d do more. God isn’t bound by our societal constructs (?)

User14March · 22/04/2025 10:50

Surely there’s so much confusion since stone tablet commandments, if all ‘true’ why not create a modern tablet update? An unequivocal bible for today’s world the turmoil & misunderstandings & grey areas surely forgivable? Much easier in bible times to accept didactic rules?

If God had ‘moved on’ would we know? Isn’t that possible? Jesus on cross was worried he’d damn us all.

Dinosaurs aren’t a part of the creation story, so some Christians don’t believe they existed and are just something scientists made up,

Indeed, there is this MN thread in classics about Christians Against Dinosaurs 🦖 🦕

The principles remain the same and they can be still be applied to the modern day. The application does not have to be exactly the same as it was originally.

Looked at a couple of the posts - unreal - imagine not understanding the history of dinosaurs. The American Museum of Natural History in NY is brilliant with their dinosaur history and exhibits.

This.

I’ve asked a few times who makes the rules that go appears to have to stick to. No-one has even tried to answer.

God created the world. God always existed, nobody created Him and there is nobody and nothing to tell Him how His world should be run. He made the rules, and gave them to us in His Word, the Bible.

God made a rule that He is unchanging, and another that His Word and therefore His laws cannot change.

To me that seems a good thing. People know what's required and don't have to adapt to new rules.

Would anybody want God to change His rules to fit in with what some minorities want? Just look at the way minority interests are corrupting Western society and I think you may agree.

Ok so god made the rule that he couldn’t forgive Adam and eves original sin, and that everyone from that point on didn’t go to heaven and the only way to solve that was sacrifice his own son?

why?

Obviously this is your belief but not everyone’s. I don’t follow god’s rules as I believe he exists.

And actually let me pick at this

what minority interests are corrupting society?

I don't want to go off topic by discussing specific religious or ethnic groups, or sex/sexuality/gender issues. If you consider the way some groups demand special privileges, or are effectively given immunity from the law, then I think you can see the principle.

No I can’t see that, I need it spelled out

and it’s fine for threads to wander off topic a bit sometimes, it’s how discussions evolve. Don’t worry I won’t drag it way off, just want to know which minority groups you feel are corrupting society.

In my experience it is thinly veiled racism from those who profess tolerance to all. Tolerant that is of anyone who agrees with their point of view and lives life by their norms ☺️

Plenty of factual evidence of the existence of dinosaurs - why people wouldn’t believe hard facts I don’t know.

Some still believe that it’s all faked.

Unbelievable - they believe in a dubious god but ignore scientific evidence about dinosaurs. We’ve always loved the exhibits on dinosaurs in the museums.

I would encourage any doubters to read the bible, there you will find the truth.

What inspired me as a Christian were several verses in the bible we can carry forward to every day life. The book of numbers for eg tells the story of a beaten donkey where it says to its master " why do you beat me so, have I not been a humble and loving animal?". This taught me to always be grateful in later life for those who help me.

In the garden of Eden the snake speaks to Adam and eve once again carrying words of warning. Many say it is unfair that say a serial killer can go to heaven who repents for his sins and a non believer who leads a good life won't, but that is God's way of saying open your hearts, embrace him and Jesus as your saviour. Granted I'm still unclear what the holy ghost does but I'm still learning after all these years.

I wish everyone well and would encourage you to read the good book - keep an open mind. I can see many posters mocking Christianity so will leave it there, as there does appear to be evidence of satanic activity and don't wish to encourage it Your local church is a great place to learn about the faith and after all these years I am still learning !

And actually let me pick at this

what minority interests are corrupting society?

One hot current example:

Men claiming to be women and demanding the right to intrude on women and girls in toilets and changing rooms. Now the Supreme Court has ruled that in law, sex means biological sex. It always did until some people bowed to woke and minority pressure to accept untruth as truth.

This is a really tiny minority of men demanding a law to give them unique privileges in female-only spaces and massive advantages in sport and athletics. Women have lost their jobs and more for objecting to it. Many females feel less safe in what should be female only spaces. Women's sports and athletics have been harmed because men, regardless of any gender reassigning, are bigger, longer in arms and legs, and stronger.

God made people male and female. One or the other, binary. God's Word does not leave any room for people to pretend to change sex. Think what might happen if God's law and man's laws allowed people to "change sex", when and as often as it suited their delusions or purpose.

DISCLAIMER. This is to illustrate a point about a minority demanding legal privileges and thereby harming society. Which in turn is to support my argument that the unchanging status of God's rules is a good thing.

I do not want to divert a thread about Jesus's resurrection into subthreads on trans or other distractions please!

There are bits of the Bible which may be historically correct. Anything else is a matter of whether you choose to believe it. Faith and fact are not mutually exclusive. All depends on whether you believe in god - I don’t.

For instance a donkey and a snake cannot talk!
