to not understand why Christians think Jesus died for our sins?

If Jesus died for everyone's sins, does that mean people are not accountable for their actions? You can kill people, steal and lie but have a protected status because Jesus died for your sins.

How does this work? Why are people not responsible for their own sins? Where is the justice?

There are bits of the Bible which may be historically correct. Anything else is a matter of whether you choose to believe it. Faith and fact are not mutually exclusive. All depends on whether you believe in god - I don’t.

For instance a donkey and a snake cannot talk!

A donkey can talk in Shrek and a snake can talk in A Jungle Book so it’s not completely unfeasible.

I would encourage any doubters to read the bible, there you will find the truth.

What inspired me as a Christian were several verses in the bible we can carry forward to every day life. The book of numbers for eg tells the story of a beaten donkey where it says to its master " why do you beat me so, have I not been a humble and loving animal?". This taught me to always be grateful in later life for those who help me.

In the garden of Eden the snake speaks to Adam and eve once again carrying words of warning. Many say it is unfair that say a serial killer can go to heaven who repents for his sins and a non believer who leads a good life won't, but that is God's way of saying open your hearts, embrace him and Jesus as your saviour. Granted I'm still unclear what the holy ghost does but I'm still learning after all these years.

I wish everyone well and would encourage you to read the good book - keep an open mind. I can see many posters mocking Christianity so will leave it there, as there does appear to be evidence of satanic activity and don't wish to encourage it Your local church is a great place to learn about the faith and after all these years I am still learning !

Questioning, observing, asking for explanations or facts is not mocking. Refusal to understand others point of view or provide nonsensical explanations does deserve to be mocked. Otherwise we end up in the situation that the US finds itself in.

Agree. Why not more clarity? Most rules need an update after thousands of years. AI advice? Why other religions have it ‘wrong’?’ I really think possible we’ve really messed up & God has moved on? Isn’t the world worse than was?

I’m a dedicated atheist but raised Catholic and will try to answer seriously.

Every is still responsible for their sins. You kill someone, steal and lie, you go to hell. However, if you kill someone, steal and lie, and later HONESTLY regret it and confess it, it’s forgiven.

The “sin” that Jesus died for was the original sin, which everyone is born with. It is a remnant everyone carries of the fact that Adam and Eve ate from the tree of knowledge. Before Jesus died, everyone who hd lived a righteous life and deserved to go to Heaven had to wait in Purgatory until this sin was forgiven. After, this sin is cleansed by baptism.

So, it’s not quite as simple as you say, that everyone’s sins are automatically forgiven. However, there is still a lot in the above story that is really problematic:

  1. The idea that desiring knowledge is such a bad sin it deserves all descendants forever to suffer;
  2. The idea that we are born dirty and sinful and need to be cleansed by baptism;
  3. The idea that a baby who dies at birth will not be admitted into Heaven as they are unbaptised;
  4. The vast amount of money the Church has extracted from grieving relatives over centuries, for candles, prayers, and sin forgiveness for their dead relatives who might be helped out of Purgatory by a priests for a suitable donation.

There might be differences if you’re talking about Anglican, Orthodox, Protestant etc versions.

I could say so much ( m much in same bracket as you) but i believe purgatory (v much a part of my catholic education for 12+ years) was 'abolished 10+ years ago. Obvs it's all a load of nonsense.

Unbelievable - they believe in a dubious god but ignore scientific evidence about dinosaurs. We’ve always loved the exhibits on dinosaurs in the museums.

I went to a catholic school from 3-18, and we were never taught about dinosaurs or anything like that. Anything prehistoric was just never mentioned.

There was a very long thread on the Christian board which made this abundantly clear. No-one was able to explain why people who had lived sin-free lives were ineligible but those who had sinned, repented and believed were all good. Surely a kind God would want everyone.

Nobody has ever lived a sin free life except Jesus. Anyone who says they have never sinned is lying.

Christians believe in dinosaurs, why wouldn't they?

This.

I’ve asked a few times who makes the rules that go appears to have to stick to. No-one has even tried to answer.

Because God is just and wrongdoing has to be punished

Depends what you mean by sin?

Didn’t Jesus get angry at some gambling thing and upturn tables (or was that just a Hollywood movie?) Is anger like that a sin?

Who do you think has never sinned? Are you really telling me there are people who have never lied, never been envious, never been unkind to someone? Everyone has sinned, even the best of people.

Anger in itself isn't a sin. It's ok to be angry at injustice and cruelty. Sin is what the Bible says sin is- the ten commandments summarise how we should live.

So anything outside the ten commandments is not a sin? (I will need to look up the ten commandments again).

Number Ten is a bit dated. Why would god have put such an odd thing down knowing we would not live like that in the future. The mentioning of ox’s etc. I see some have been edited to keep with the times.

The ten commandments are a summary. I think most sins would be covered by them. Obviously porn isn't explicitly mentioned as it didn't exist back then, but it would be covered by 'do not commit adultery'

The concept of "sin" is a social construct used to control and maintain order within a religion .

I’m an atheist - we have a moral code without the threat of sins.

And if you don’t believe in god? Can’t be punished by something I don’t believe exists.

I'm not sure that is specifically mentioned in the 10 commandments, no. But the Bible has plenty to say about the treatment of the vulnerable and about parenting, so other parts of the Bible would say that those things are wrong.

So you don't know anyone who has never sinned. The only way you can answer my question is to pretend that sin doesn't exist.

It doesn’t exist. You can be a good person without the threat of religious punishment

If god is meant to be looking after the vulnerable - he’s not doing a very good job.

What punishment do you think I have coming to me?
