To respond this way to sister criticising my diet?

ByOpenRubyReader · 19/04/2025 13:03

I've been a vegetarian since 10 years old, now 35. My mum/dad have been supportive since the start but the same can not be said for my sister who constantly asks how I'm getting my protein, B12, nutrients etc and has since I've been a teenager.

She did it for the 1,000th time while we were out at a restaurant and instead of explaining for the 1,000th time I just asked her if there is any sort of nutritional/developmental deficiency why am I 6" taller than her, in far better shape than her and a multimillionaire while she regularly relies on our parents for money.

She didn't say anything for a second then raised her voice, asked what was wrong with me and stormed out. DF tried to get her to come back in but was unsuccessful and told me I shouldn't have said that but it was a long time coming.

AIBU to think this was a reasonable way to respond, keeping in mind I have told her over and over again to stop commenting on my diet?

looking at the guidelines

  • No personal attacks
  • No posts that break the law, including hate speech of any kind
  • No trolling, misleading or deliberately inflammatory behaviour
  • No trollhunting
  • No spamming
  • No multiple accounts

Which of these relates?

Am comfortable being admonished but my whole posting history should show you that I'm a respectful poster.

Non controversial, at all. 😕

Someone called OP a bitch, is that the post thats been deleted?

harriethoyle · 19/04/2025 15:49

@beetr00 the MN mods are becoming really trigger happy - I recently said someone was behaving childishly and that got deleted 🙄 yet obviously fake threads stay up for ages! Don’t let it bother you.

Maybe I did go a bit overboard going by these responses...

I am in the minority, but I don't blame you. I can be quite scathing when pushed beyond a point, so I could imagine me saying something very similar when provoked.

ukgone2pot · 19/04/2025 15:51

I think what @ByOpenRubyReader was getting at my the money comment was more the fact that being a veg hasn't impacted her in any way - i.e. she's been successful and it hasn't held her back. It's a valid point.

Uhhh yeah I'm definitely not going to apologise.

At the end of your days who is likely to be around; your business acquaintances who respond well to your sharp tongue or your sister who shares a family history with you?

For both your sake think about approaching serious conversations in a more thoughtful way.

JennyTals · 19/04/2025 15:59

Sounds a bit like she had it coming

scotstars · 19/04/2025 16:07

You were unnecessarily unkind and bringing up life success and height to prove your point was odd. I wouldn't have justified myself 1000 times I'd have stopped answering her a long time ago

AngelicKaty · 19/04/2025 16:09

@ByOpenRubyReader YANBU OP - your DS definitely had it coming. For 25 years she's thought it OK to question your dietary choices and in more recent years has made "jokes" about your DP's sexuality as she perceives it - how fucking dare she?! (I'd have cracked on this ahead of the questioning on diet TBH.) Yet now, when you finally snap and make comments about her lifestyle choices she acts the victim (yeah, nice try). I'm so glad your parents aren't giving you grief about speaking up and that you don't plan on apologising. The only thing I'd be saying to her is "Now you know what it feels like to have your sister making unsolicited comments about your choices in life."

Applesonthelawn · 19/04/2025 16:09

I think you were brutal but if these are the facts, they are the facts, and no-one should shy away from that. Harsh but true (if true).

LaurieFairyCake · 19/04/2025 16:11

Nah, you did the right thing

anyone insinuating veggies get dementia and are thick can fuck off

AngelicKaty · 19/04/2025 16:14

Indeed. And given OP's DS has asked her, ad nauseum, about her protein intake, it's certainly relevant for OP to point out her business and financial success, given how necessary protein is for brain health and function. OP could hardly have become so successful if her body - and in particular, her brain - has been deprived of protein over the last 25 years.
OP's DS needs to wind her neck in - and maybe now, she will.

the sisiter who shares a family history of sniping at her for 15 years?

Jewel1968 · 19/04/2025 16:16

Why do you think your sister challenges you in this way? Is she always the one to bring up your vegetarian diet? Is it possible she feels judged for not being vegetarian?

Elsvieta · 19/04/2025 16:19

I don't think you did anything wrong, if she's been making these sorts of comments over and over for years. Sounds like she can dish it out but she can't take it. If she drops it now, result.

real13 · 19/04/2025 16:30

It’s not a reasonable way to respond, but at least you’ve got your point across.

She’s 100% not going to mention it ever again, and certainly not in front of people.

Job done, I would say 🤣.

LlynTegid · 19/04/2025 16:38

You have acknowledged you should not have mentioned money, other than that I don't think you were wrong.

People going on about things after reasonable responses is tedious, and I would be annoyed in your shoes. I eat meat but would not impose it on others.

Stuffnfluff · 19/04/2025 16:49

Not really about a multimillionaire vegetarian and her sister. It's about messed up family dynamics and how it has been left to fester for years, mutually between both of you.

Superfoodie123 · 19/04/2025 16:50

The money comment was cringe.

housethatbuiltme · 19/04/2025 16:51

What has money got to do with it... such a bizarre comment.

Wiltingasparagusfern · 19/04/2025 16:56

The thought of using what I earn as ammo in an argument makes me want to die of cringe.

You should probably get your B12 levels checked, though. It is quite an important vitamin.

pinkyredrose · 19/04/2025 17:17

What's her problem? Sounds like she can dish it out but she can't take, bloody well serves her right.

PeggyMitchellsCameo · 19/04/2025 17:23

While you may have been deemed unkind, there is something going on here.
Sibling relationships are complicated.
She already knows you are taller, in good shape, and have done well in life so your diet is the last frontier - the one thing she can needle you about.
I think she’s been out of order for a long time.
She will have the hump.
But maybe it will stop her going it again.
And…. you could have said far worse!!!

Shubbypubby · 19/04/2025 17:23

Good on you. She’s been poking away at you for years and it sounds like you’ve finally had enough. Yes what you said was mean but she needs to learn this is what happens if you keep harping on at people. She shouldn’t dish it out if she can’t take it.

LBFseBrom · 19/04/2025 17:32

PowderMonkeys · 19/04/2025 13:05

Completely unreasonable. Just say ‘Same as the last 1000 times you asked, Linda. Shall we order?’

Yes! She needs to shut up, once is enough.

PS: Are you really a multimillionaire or was that hyperbole?

ohdearagain2 · 19/04/2025 17:32

ByOpenRubyReader · 19/04/2025 13:10

I only mentioned money because she often comments on stuff related to brain development, dementia etc quite regularly and if I'm being honest I was just pissed off at hearing this for the 1,000th time.

That isn't to say I think rich = smart or poor = dumb because I know it's much more complex than that, but I do feel like it was justified in this case.

Edited

Well it sounds like you wanted to both hurt her and boast about your circumstances - well done goal achieved I guess!
