To think I can't be the only person who doesn't know a single trans person

VioletSpeedwell · 17/04/2025 22:58

Seriously.

The news is full of people worrying about how the SC ruling will affect people who identify as trans.

Where are they? Not in my office (large organisation), my family or social groups. I don't come across any in the village where I live or when I go into town.

DD is at university and doesn't know any trans people.

Surely, I can't be the only one?

I now two older men who identify as trans women.

Tenn and young girls, lots, numerous friends of my kids, kids of people I know from work or other places, kids of cousins. The majority seem to have other issues . Actually - all of them, the one who didn't' desisted.

Yeah I wasn’t ’quite insistant’, it was one sentence. The argument on this thread isn’t about whether trans women are really women, so I’m not derailing by arguing with you. Try reading the OP rather than just looking for a bun fight.

So, you don't even have your own opinion about how often the clothes should be worn to make them trans. So why offer your opinion that occasional wearing doesn't make them trans?

I'm not derailing anything.

You're avoiding answering a very very simple question, after making a statement about how often wearing women's clothing makes someone trans.

I just saw a transman on tiktok, I genuinely wouldn't have known they weren't a man if they hadn't have said. I must be pretty dumb 😭

A man occasionally wearing women’s clothing isn’t transgender

How horrendously transphobic of you to deny a lady her right to identify as a lady.

Tootiredtowhat · 17/04/2025 23:26

It’s about 1 in 200 people identify as trans. Most people don’t have 200 people they interact with via work, friends or family. So it wouldn’t be surprising if you didn’t personally know anyone.

VioletSpeedwell · 17/04/2025 23:13

I been watching a lot of news items the past couple of days and there's lots of "I'm worried about my trans friends. We stand with the trans community."

And I'm thinking, do you really know any trans people cos I bloody don't and think the majority don't.

I don’t know anyone either. I don’t think that’s shocking either. Could care less tbh.

Shows your ignorance really. Hopefully the current media presence will help educate you. Minority groups mattering and making an impact shouldn’t be so surprising to you.

What a load of tripe.

A filtered image on TikTok isn’t real life. In a group of real men you’d soon spot the the tiny ‘man’ with slight shoulders, a waist and little hands and feet

RickiRaccoon · 17/04/2025 23:28

I've known 5 trans women in recent years, I think. A couple through a political party and 3 through work.

My DH had no idea so maybe you're the same and just don't notice. After a number of months he said X thinks someone might be trans. I said, Yes, of course she is. I assumed when I met her.

In my experience, it hasn't affected me at all if someone else chooses to identify as a woman and use the woman's toilet. My interactions with them have been much the same as with other women.

Ecocool · 17/04/2025 23:28

Insanityisnotastrategy · 17/04/2025 23:23

Maybe they just don't like you?

That would absolutely be the best outcome for me, my partner, their parents, and those girls (not in that order!) . I hope that is what it is although I sadly doubt it.

We have three on our road of around 100 houses.

Is that your go-to reply when you can’t answer a question?

Don’t bother answering that . . . I’ll Google it 🤣

But you can't. You can tell people that don't pass very well. But you can't spot those that do. How would you know?

Zero trans "women" pass as women, and pretty much zero trans "men".

That figure was incorrect as the ONS said people may misunderstand the question.

A person waves a transgender rights flag during a demonstration

Number of trans people may have been overestimated in census, ONS says

Language barriers may have seen some people mistakenly say they consider themselves to be trans.

SquashedMallow · 17/04/2025 23:28

I genuinely know a few. (Work in a large organisation) .

One in particular I work closely with (trans man) so biological female. No problems at all. However their social media is rife with trans rants. Which is fine - because our work relationship is tip top - but our personal views outside of work would likely not align.

All the trans people I know (for what it's worth) have very similar social media postings: hate for JK Rowling/ hate for people that misuse pronouns/pro men in women's toilets/lack of tolerance for anyone that's questioning of any part of trans idealogy.

I can confidently say you'd walk past loads on a weekly basis even if you don't know them in a family/friends/ close "co worker" situation.

I can bet my life on one thing though - I do not believe in the slightest that your DD has nobody at her university that's "trans".

Yeah I don’t have to answer your questions, you clearly aren’t interested in actual discussion anyway. Just arguing. I just cannot be arsed sharing my views further with you.

Ethelflaedofmercia · 17/04/2025 23:28

I know of 2 trans woman, both just do their own thing tbh but dress very “slutty” and you can very much tell. Both were married with adult children and left their wives.

I work with three non binary young adults. All three suffer from mental health and I often have to take them to one dude about personal hygiene. They’re lovely young people but are clearly suffering and very lonely. I often wonder if they’re just saying they’re non binary to try and fit in? Or to be part of something. One of them worries me deeply, they have attempted suicide a couple of times and self harm

rosemarble · 17/04/2025 23:28

I worked at the same place as the transgender partner of the first transgender mayor of Cambridge. She just went about her day like the rest of us.

The MN 'you can always tell' line always tickles me. Sure, if someone looks like Brian Blessed in a frock and size 14 courts it's a fair shout that they probably weren't born female. I worked with someone for years before discovering she was a trans woman. She just seemed like a certain type of dowdy middle class woman to me.

Sure you did

Jumpingthruhoops · 17/04/2025 23:30

VioletSpeedwell · 17/04/2025 23:03

Are you trying to suggest they don’t exist?

Not at all. I'm just amazed at the impact they've had when they are so few in number.

Don't let social media fool you - if you went by that you'd think every other person was trans when they make up just over 1% of the population!

Which is why it's kinda staggering that there even needed to be a ruling relating to the rights of biological women that make up 51%!!

Lostmyusernametoday · 17/04/2025 23:30

Pinkelephant66 · 17/04/2025 23:03

Same. It’s such a small minority of people… yet we are meant to bow down to this nonsense (I presume that’s what you’re getting at)

Wouldn’t you be flipping that? So circa 1 in 1000 people is trans and the population is highly concentrated in major cities. How on earth have the media convinced everyone you’re in imminent danger from trans women. Hint hint, it’s the patriarchy and awful men who are threats to women!

TropicofCapricorn · 17/04/2025 23:31

GCAcademic · 17/04/2025 23:28

It's definitely a go to for people who just talk nonsense

it's the same as everyone who says "the affair William had with Rose Hanbury is widely reported in foreign media" but when asked to provide a single credible source, they won't and at "it's easy to find , just Google it".

They’re also not ‘perverted’ -a word which has unpleasant connotations.

PinkPonyClubber · 17/04/2025 23:32

I feel like I don’t know tons of people and yet I know quite a few. I can think of 4 people with trans children for a start.
I don’t know any non binary people but it think friends child might identify as that (identify only as it’s not a thing).
