To think I can't be the only person who doesn't know a single trans person

Seriously.

The news is full of people worrying about how the SC ruling will affect people who identify as trans.

Where are they? Not in my office (large organisation), my family or social groups. I don't come across any in the village where I live or when I go into town.

DD is at university and doesn't know any trans people.

Surely, I can't be the only one?

But you dont know that you can tell all trans women because if you cant tell you wouldnt know. Ive known a couple who were obvious, one i was surprised when I found out and someone with a gender neutral name i couldnt decide and it was only the third time I met them i knew and that was only because a friend used their pronouns so Im still not 100% sure.

I think people find it comforting to think they 'always know' but they dont

I think they do though, with men saying they're women.

strawlight · 17/04/2025 23:16

One teenager currently transitioning female to male. It’s been traumatic for him and his family tbh.

Husband worked with a trans woman about ten years ago. Caused quite a stir when a 6 foot 17 stone colleague teetered in in heels.

Daughter is at school with a very confused person who changes gender so often I now can’t recall their biological sex. Think he/she self describes as gender fluid.

Yes you can.

But you can't. You can tell people that don't pass very well. But you can't spot those that do. How would you know?

So how is often is a dress needed to be worn for the man to be trans?

Again, google it yourself.

GlutesthatSalute · 17/04/2025 23:16

There's one who lives around here. I don't know him. He likes to go into the charity shop and finger all the women's clothes on the hangers, and try to get the old lady staff to join him in a conversation about what "us girls" like to wear. Have witnessed this three times I think it's quite sad but some people seem creeped out or angered by his insistence that other people join in.

RaraRachael · 17/04/2025 23:16

I don't know any trans people nor does anyone I know

Arran2024 · 17/04/2025 23:17

I don't know any, but I see trans women around, on the tube, in restaurants, in pubs, ladies toilets at Westfield shopping centre, working in shops. I don't believe they pass unnoticed because I think women in particular pick up subtle clues about people.

Itsoneofthose · 17/04/2025 23:17

This reads like ‘because I don’t know any, it can’t be much of an issue’. Just know, your life and radius of what and who you ‘know’ or are aware of is tiny in the grand scheme of things.

WallaceinAnderland · 17/04/2025 23:18

Many you won't know unless they tell you. I have two family members and at least one friend of the family members who say they are trans. Probably loads more. Especially if you include non binary as trans because they don't make any changes to their appearance.

All of them look like their original sex. The only difference is a name change and sometimes clothing.

TheodoraCrumpet · 17/04/2025 23:18

The MN 'you can always tell' line always tickles me. Sure, if someone looks like Brian Blessed in a frock and size 14 courts it's a fair shout that they probably weren't born female. I worked with someone for years before discovering she was a trans woman. She just seemed like a certain type of dowdy middle class woman to me.

VioletSpeedwell · 17/04/2025 23:19

If you work in schools there’s tons of them.

But that's mainly just going through a phase. When I was at school, I identified as Madonna. Funnily enough no one agreed I was Madonna - especially not the teachers.

So ... You don't know? You seemed quite insistent that "occasional" wearing doesn't make them trans, so you must at least have an opinion on how often the clothes are needed to be worn to make someone trans...

Oh wait, because perhaps maybe a man wearing a dress doesn't make them a woman, no matter how often they wear it? Because maybe men can't actually be women?

Ecocool · 17/04/2025 23:20

I do know 2 girls (circa 19 and 20) who say they are "non binary". I feel so sorry for them.

They have let themselves go. They don't seem to care about their looks or their weight. When I bump in to them (with their parents out walking) they seem sullen and completely disinterested.

They (sisters) are now two very physically unattractive girls. One, definetely has some sort of autism.

Their poor parents. The evilness of this cult means they are almost powerless to stop this. The girls are both at a university which is promoting the cult.

meganorks · 17/04/2025 23:20

Yes I know some trans people.

If there are so few of them, why is everyone so scared of them?!

Funny how they can never actually answer these questions… It’s almost as if it’s all utter bollocks!

NotTerfNorCis · 17/04/2025 23:22

I worked with someone who for two years identified as a woman before giving it up. That was during the pandemic era, and we had one team member who'd never met him, but had spoken to him many times over Teams. That person was genuinely shocked to find out the truth. But if he had met the transwoman, it would have been immediately obvious.

Totallymessed · 17/04/2025 23:22

KrisAkabusi · 17/04/2025 23:03

How do you know? Unless you see them naked, you can't tell with a lot of people.

Don't be ridiculous.

meganorks · 17/04/2025 23:20

They're not. They're scared of the men that abuse the rules/systems to attack and rape women. The men that expose themselves to women. The men that gain access to young girls... The men that take women's achievements away from them... The men that take the place if the women on sports teams.... The men that assault them.

RaraRachael · 17/04/2025 23:22

I worked in schools all my life and never knew any trans or non-binary people

Didimum · 17/04/2025 23:23

I don’t know any trans women, but I know two trans men. One is the child of a colleague, the other is a choir teacher.

Yeah I wasn’t ’quite insistant’, it was one sentence. The argument on this thread isn’t about whether trans women are really women, so I’m not derailing by arguing with you. Try reading the OP rather than just looking for a bun fight.

Who is "afraid" of them?

Women are afraid of predators. We don't know what they typically look like however typically they are not female. They are male.

If a male disguises himself as a woman, then I have every right to be scared.

rosemarble · 17/04/2025 23:25

My adult son was in a band with a transman. I had not the slightest clue until he told me.
I had thought that he looked rather young for his age but that’s all.

CheeseWisely · 17/04/2025 23:25

Yes I’ve known 2 or 3, worked with one. I don’t buy the ‘you wouldn’t know’ line because as much as many think they ‘pass’ the majority really don’t. One of the ‘Transwomen’ I know has a full beard FFS.
