Hi all. AIBU to want / call the police for neighbour blasting music? I could probably tolerate but DD9 is getting very upset.

Have you asked them to turn it down?

YoungSoak · 12/04/2025 19:39

They’ll only entertain a noise complaint if it’s between the hours of 11pm and 7am

THATbasicgirl · 12/04/2025 19:40

They wont do much

cestlavielife · 12/04/2025 19:41

Put some headphones on

ImmortalSnowman · 12/04/2025 19:42

It's Saturday night, YABVU.

Easipeelerie · 12/04/2025 19:42

You need to play the longer game. Go on your council website and find out how to complain in your area. Make a 2 week noise diary, submit it and they’ll send someone out then write them a letter. It worked for me for noise and for constant bonfires.
Re: police, some will say it’s a council matter, depending on your area.

user4578 · 12/04/2025 19:43

Just ask them to turn it down 🤷🏻‍♀️

Our council’s noise team can be contacted at any time of day nowadays. Used to be after 11pm but they changed that a while back.

If I put headphones on, this will help DD9?

It's the council you call unless it's in a public place

MrsRuthFisher · 12/04/2025 19:44

It's not even 8pm on a spring weekend evening 🤣

Do you know which neighbours it is? Could you go round and ask them to turn it down a bit? Stress that it's upsetting your child, and they might be reasonable. Unfortunately, if they aren't willing to be reasonable, you're probably out of luck. Its not even 8pm.

It's not even 8pm. It sounds like you need the police calling on you 🥴

LittleCharlotte · 12/04/2025 19:49

Ask them nicely to turn it down first, explaining that you appreciate they want to enjoy the weather, etc. but it's upsetting your child. I don't think you will get far with the police at this time of night.

BlueIsTheSea · 12/04/2025 19:50

They are allowed to play music at 7pm on a Saturday night. Why is it upsetting your 9 year old so much? I can understand why it's annoying, that's not a reason to be upset. Why not go out if it's that bad? I'm guessing this is a one off.

Yes but it's been going on relentless for over an hour and it's like someone drumming in your ear.

Bit early yet

Can she play in a room on the side of the house not adjoined? With headphones or ear defenders on? Maybe an audiobook?

Or if it was my DD10 I'd take her out for a little walk/out on a bike ride whilst it's still light. Then if I saw anyone from the offending house on our way back in i'd just politely say "hey we're just heading in now to get settled for bed please could you turn it down a touch shortly? Thanks"

Outside? Seriously? No one around here would do that as it would be deemed massively inconsiderate to make others listen to your taste in music.

Ilovemyshed · 12/04/2025 19:54

Well it rather depends if it is a regular event or a one off. Maybe they are having a party? If it happens all the time and late into the night then raise a noise complaint with the council.

please don't waste valuable police time on this.

I don't think they are. Had discussion with council a while ago regarding a previous neighbour and they stated any time which is causing an issue.

It’s upsetting when you have no idea if it’ll be switched off in 10 minutes or carry on for another 5 hours. The mental impact of other people’s noise is draining.

LittleCharlotte · 12/04/2025 19:55

At least ask them to turn it down first. I agree that people don't have the right to blast music out whenever they want to but give them the chance to be a bit more reasonable first and turn it down.

New neighbour and start of warm weather. It will be crime prevention as it may be a crime scene soon.

I shouldn't have to. Should be common sense and respect.
