To call the police regarding neighbour's loud music?

Hi all. AIBU to want / call the police for neighbour blasting music? I could probably tolerate but DD9 is getting very upset.

@OldCottageGreenhouse I don'y hear any hair dryers or washing machines from either neighbour. I'd be fine if I could.

Their teen children often have karaoke sessions which is quite loud and annoying but don't last too long and tolerate this as well as their dogs barking everytime someone goes past their property.

people blasting music might not be the reasonable type, what happens if they threaten OP, she shouldn’t have to put herself in potentially dangerous situation, she has a kid to think about to. Some people don’t take kindly being told what to do by their neighbours. Some ppl are nasty & her neighbours sound like utter chavs at best

So what should people do, go through life not saying boo to a goose, letting people take the piss 'just incase' they're rude when spoken to?

Utterly ridiculous way to live your life.

OP said she'd "go round with a hammer" - With that attitude she probably would get some stick and rightly so.

It's not unreasonable to enjoy music in your garden - If OP had knocked the door and politely asked what time they were finishing, she might have got a decent answer. Or she might not, but if you don't ask, you don't get.

It seems she has some preconceived ideas about these people based on their music though, so I expect nothing short of total capitulation on their part would have been good enough.

TalkToTheHand123 · 13/04/2025 07:57

Reasonability depends on the volume level. It was ridiculous. You couldn't have a conversation in your own house with all the doors and windows closed. You shouldn't have to go knock and ask. One should always be considerate of one's neighbours.

I don't think I would have got stick going around with a hammer though.

Agreed except I don’t know what you mean about “got stick … hammer “.

You're an hour too late. Music was awful unless you like chav music?

I actually have no idea what 'chav 'music is? not a genre I am aware of

Of course it’s unreasonable to “enjoy music in your garden” if that means imposing your music on others. Of course, you enjoying your music in your garden only happens because your own neighbours aren’t so inconsiderate as to play their music in their garden and drown out yours.

Bringmeahigherlove · 13/04/2025 08:24

I don’t understand why people feel the need to blast their music in built up areas! It drives me mad. So selfish, not everyone wants to listen to it. I wouldn’t call the police though, I’m sure they have more important matters to deal with but I would knock on them and ask them to turn it down.

i would say it relates to volume, although it’s unlikely to include anything classical. Some people seem unable to enjoy what they consider music unless it’s deafening. The idiots blasting it out of their car or as in this case, in their garden, with no thought for anyone else.

Where are you where it was 21 at gone 7.30? That's when the OP started the post and people lambasting her as it was "only 8pm", come off it you are in the UK, it is April, I am in one of the warmest part of the country today and it certainly wasn't 21 in the evening! Just because you can wear a t-shirt in 16 degrees, it doesn't mean you have to inflict your musical tastes on people with outdoor speakers. Can't you have the music inside. I personally think some houses are much more suitable for parties than others; all different conditions apply one being are you generally considerate neighbours but others include are your neighbours there, do you have a big enough house to take it inside. Or if you don't, do you care about being squashed into a house so as not inflict your music on others.

I didn't say it was 21 at 7pm. But someone said it wasn't warm yesterday, well it was and even at 16 degrees is a warm evening OP said the music had been going on for an hour at 7.30

Atnd not sure why you are giving me a bloody lecture about playing music. I was at work lol

If she took a hammer round then she's unlikely to get any stick, ie trouble

They aren't even in the garden. They are in the next one down so speaker is on even louder. Police call suggested as council will be closed. DD9 has mental health issues with loud sounds.

Whilst I sympathise with your DD it’s not for the world to manage. You can’t expect everyone to go about their day silently for your DD. It’s the first weekend we’ve had with nice weather people are enjoying it. You said it’s a new neighbour so maybe a house warming party and not a regular thing. Either way it’s not a police matter

No one expects silence but it’s unreasonable to blast your music so others can’t enjoy peace in own home - nor is it reasonable to l have speakers in garden . Also why do some people assume others want to be forced to listen to their music preferences? You get this in parks and at the beach now, people with portable speakers blaring whatever they want. What if we all did that?! Then no one would be able to hear what they wanted to , just a loud mess of sound.

It is unreasonable if it was every night but I think for a one off party it’s not the end of the world. If it’s an ongoing issue in the future then obviously that’s not ok but given it’s been one time on a nice spring evening I wouldn’t get worked up about it

Hmm I think your stupidity is more likely to get you hurt tbh, so whilst i originally said it’s not a police matter maybe you should call them to stop you getting yourself hurt 🙈

what time did the music turn off?

Tricho · 13/04/2025 09:51

OP respectfully- start saving for a detached house.

TalkToTheHand123 · 13/04/2025 09:57

I think it would be more them getting hurt.

When I say neighbour, I don't mean adjoining. Their garden is opposite ours. They weren't even in their garden. I believe they were in their neighbours garden further away so had speaker so they could hear from a garden away.

The music was off about 20:30 when it got a bit dark and not long after a couple of people started shouting at them.

So in summary, your neighbour played loud music for just over an hour and a half for the first time, on a sunny weekend evening. Then when someone shouted to turn it off they did.

Yep better load that gun and get ready for next time. They sound like the worse neighbours ever 🙄

TalkToTheHand123 · 13/04/2025 10:09

It may have been coincidental they turned it off at that time. I have mental health issues with sounds. The hammer and gun were a lst resort. It would take me a few nights of this to get to this stage I believe though.

I must fit this category as I do love to blast my fav music from the car when I'm driving alone

Timetochillnow · 13/04/2025 10:19

TalkToTheHand123 · 12/04/2025 20:44

But why the need to blast it? What's wrong with just a sensible level? People could be on night shift etc. It's totally ignorant behaviour.

People on night shift will be up by now! Not a strong argument- Those poor souls have to tolerate all the everyday noise during the day and no one complains about that 😁

TalkToTheHand123 · 13/04/2025 10:33

As previously stated, when I say night shift, I mean those on shifts who may be sleeping at this time. Day to day noise is acceptable, blasting music to me is not and is very ignorant.
