Hi all. AIBU to want / call the police for neighbour blasting music? I could probably tolerate but DD9 is getting very upset.

You CAN contact the noise control section of your local council. Check online.
You can NOT contact the police. The noise control peeps will take a complaint for any time if it is (possibly) too loud. But if it is within acceptable levels they will not do anything. My council actually ask if you can take the phone outside - I assume they can record the decibels somehow over the phone. Also - taking a hammer to a neighbour is a bit of an over reaction and a dick move…

Ihopeyouhavent · 12/04/2025 20:28

Its SHIT but there is NOTHING you can do.

Our neighbours (pigs) plot up there garden tent against our extension and have parties. Unless its goes past 12pm theres nothing you can do sadly.

The air bnb people with the dog were idiots but the general air bnb hosts aren’t at fault, the other owner hasn’t soundproofed their house. If someone rents an air bnb it’s not shocking they make some noise. It’s crap for you but it doesn’t make everyone who stays there an obnoxious twat for having the tv on. Can you not soundproof from your side?

The trouble with Air BNB noise is that the residents are not part of the community, in fact they are more likely than not on holiday so often self absorbed and don't care about their noise. This is an increasing problem where we live as the air BNBs were near the beach and now they are in traditionally residential areas. We had a group of young people, staying at one on our road last year, playing cricket along the street as it is a dead endz the ball constantly landing in our front garden at 9 at night, they were really drunk and in the end my very outspoken older neighbour had a huge go at them. They then carried on for a bit and went inside to continue the party until the early hours. I also had someone knocking late at night insisting they were staying at mine as drunk and didn't know what house they were staying at! It is very very annoying!

NeilDiamondsBlowDry · 12/04/2025 20:28

@TalkToTheHand123 that is exactly what will happen plus when they hear their favourite tune. I lived next to some horrendous neighbours during the heatwave and it made my life a misery I couldn’t sleep and they spent their entire lives outside it seemed. There was nothing I could do as a lone woman they just laughed at me.
edit and it is obvious your threat of going round with a hammer was not serious I think people are being disingenuous

They aren't even in the garden. They are in the next one down so speaker is on even louder. Police call suggested as council will be closed. DD9 has mental health issues with loud sounds.

They will have an out of hours number that is manned. In my area I have had to leave a message (on several different occasions sadly but I live in a shite area) and I get a call back within half an hour. Even at 3am on a Sunday morning.

TalkToTheHand123 · 12/04/2025 20:29

They getting shouted at by other neighbours. Hammer is cool plan b though.

It's Saturday night, YABVU.

It doesn't make any difference what night it is. People shouldn't have loud banging music in a residential area with other houses nearby.

tillyandmilly · 12/04/2025 20:32

Sympathies - everyone is so entitled with no consideration of neighbours - never used to be like this - why cant they have their music indoors ? Crazy - this would make my blood boil!

The actual owners who removed most of the walls and didn’t install carpets or blinds never airbnbed their house out (and I do wonder if they know their home is being sublet out in this way), nor did they have a grand piano. That’s their mate who’s house sitting while they’re abroad for several years. All we ever heard from them was if they occasionally went out in the evening and their dogs barked whenever someone walked past the front door.

I did once go round to complain to a renter about the TV volume, which was so loud I could hear it through the front door and they couldn’t hear the doorbell.

kitchenplans · 12/04/2025 20:36

Its the last forecast properly sunny day for a while. Of course it's OK for people to play some music and enjoy their gardens as long as it's not going on late into the night, into anti social hours.

If OPs daughter has specific sensitivity to noise, she should wear ear defenders, as many children do.

rainbowsandraspberrygin · 12/04/2025 20:37

Hi all. I am very noise sensitive myself and although I’m happy for people to have fun and enjoy the weather, I would struggle with a speaker like this when I’m trying to get kids to sleep as well. OP I’d recommend Loop Ear Plugs for both of you. They’re great and lots of options so you can still engage and chat but they take the edge off the bass of the thumping music. They also have silent ones and ones you can swap between. It won’t add the link so I’ve deleted. I’ll try to add to a separate message.

If I put headphones on, this will help DD9?

She could get the headphones on. Why is she upset about loud music

A big speaker in the garden is very unreasonable as they know the whole neighbourhood will hear it. We all have different noise tolerance levels, mine is very low.
What sort of people think it is ok to inflict their noise on the neighbours?

Some people are more sensitive to different sounds than other people.

its a shame they didn’t warn you OP. We have had this and it’s gone on for hours and with words I’d rather my young kids didn’t hear. At least with a warning of a party you could have gone out for dinner, to a friends or stayed somewhere. I know you shouldn’t have to buy some people don’t care about others - they’re very inconsiderate and I hope it doesn’t become regular for you.

Holidaysun2025 · 12/04/2025 20:41

On our council website it says thru don't do anything about one of party's.

I have never understood noise complaints really . People have weeks /Months of peace. One night of loud music and people are up in arms. And seems to forget alm the peaceful nights they have had . And can't allow their weights to have one night of music.

Summer is in the way so MN will be full of music complains, bbq complaints, children playing complaints.

Why doesn't the person creating the noise where headphones? Why must everyone else?

TalkToTheHand123 · 12/04/2025 20:42

Wearing eardefenders in your own home is a rediculous suggestion.

Totally agree. A one off isn't a police or a council issue.

But why the need to blast it? What's wrong with just a sensible level? People could be on night shift etc. It's totally ignorant behaviour.

@Zebedee999 the same ones that have fireworks

shewasasaint · 12/04/2025 20:45

If OP put a speaker in her garden and played Wagner opera at full volume I suspect the noisy neighbours wouldn't be happy about that.

Why do they get to inflict their music on everyone else? I'm so glad I have only considerate neighbours.

Portakalkedi · 12/04/2025 20:46

Police won't do anything. Maybe say some hurty comments about on Twitter about the neighbours, then the police should be right there. Seriously though sorry OP, lots of people are just selfish twats
