Hi all. AIBU to want / call the police for neighbour blasting music? I could probably tolerate but DD9 is getting very upset.

Wearing eardefenders in your own home is a rediculous suggestion.

Glad I replied then. Just trying to help Confused

But why the need to blast it? What's wrong with just a sensible level? People could be on night shift etc. It's totally ignorant behaviour.

To be fair, if they are nightshift then they won’t mind noise at night 😂

Yeah that was me- was more a short term suggestion to help calm her if she is getting distressed I wasn't suggesting she should have to or should wear them daily or anything but in your situation my immediate priority would be helping my child muffle the noise so she was comfortable and settled, noise complaint later maybe

Totally agree. A one off isn't a police or a council issue.

It would be if it continued. Once is enough for me. Ignorant unts.

Why doesn't the person creating the noise where headphones? Why must everyone else?

Wouldn't work if 20 people listening to the music. How many parties or nightclubs do you attend where you all have to wear earphones?

It's a party it's what people do. Low music at party's doesn't really go. As I said days /weeks of peace. A one of party and its a massive upset. Give and take let them have their party.

Yes but one offs aren't the issue, speakers in the garden are just massively inconsiderate. I go to quite a few summer parties but not one of my friends or DH's friends have speakers in the garden. Even as a teenager I had a party in my family detached home with quite a bit of distance between us and the neighbours but I didn't have speakers outside as I wasn't hosting a music festival!

Zebedee999 · 12/04/2025 20:50

This thread makes it easy to see those who are considerate for their neighbours and those others who are all about "me me me". If only each house had their owner type pasted above the door then the former could avoid the latter and the chavvy types can live together blaring noise out to their hearts content. Then everyone is happy.

Ok smarty pants, if they had just finished a shift and wanted sleep or needed sleep beforehand.

If OP put a speaker in her garden and played Wagner opera at full volume I suspect the noisy neighbours wouldn't be happy about that.

Why do they get to inflict their music on everyone else? I'm so glad I have only considerate neighbours.

Yup. Or 5 nursery rhymes on loop for hours on end. You can tell the people on this thread who are the scuzzy sorts who think nothing of playing music without headphones on a train etc.

This is just one more example of a thread (PJs in public, thong in public swimming pool) of how little dignity, decency and decorum some people are determined to display.

I never blast music but I am tolerant of it in small doses (especially early evening), just because people are saying they wouldn't call the feds doesn't mean they're pumping dubstep around their street

Doesn't need to be low, just not wall shaking level and constant thud, thud thud. Gives you a migrane for a long time.

That’s just the tough shit side of shift work.

From someone who has done shift work for 23 years. The world doesn’t stop making noise because you want sleep unfortunately, Nice as that would be.

TalkToTheHand123 · 12/04/2025 20:56

Maybe but it is still ignorant and there are laws to abide by.

OP posts:
Growlybear83 · 12/04/2025 20:56

I think you’re being very unreasonable to have been complaining about the noise as early as 8 pm. If it’s still as loud at midnight then I would go round and ask them to turn it down, but it’s out of order to be complaining at this time of night.

It's really not if normal neighbour noise like music at 7pm causes her a problem.

LillyPJ · 12/04/2025 20:58

I hate noise from neighbours but I think you need to speak to the neighbours first. Be friendly and polite and try to appeal to their better nature - they may well not even realise their noise is bothering anybody. Besides, I doubt if the police will do anything unless it goes on for hours or they've got nothing better to do.

Yup. The laws say not between 11pm and 7am.

Come back at 11.01 and you might have a point.

Yes same here. I don't have party's but my neighbours do. I quite like hearing their music laughter. Their loundness. Happiness. It reminds me of when my parents used to have new years eve party's and mile stone birthdays. I think it makes me reflect on happy times.

New neighbour and start of warm weather. It will be crime prevention as it may be a crime scene soon.

then you would be arrested for disturbing the peace instead

Exactly, I was once sat in the garden during a heatwave and one of the neighbours were playing old classics and it just added to my already chilled happy mood tbh

You won't though, will you, given that you haven't even got the bottle to ask them to turn it down before you're thinking about complaining to the police(!).

It's not late, it's a warm summer's evening and they're having a garden party. The police won't care and your daughter will have to deal with it.

It's not even 8pm. It sounds like you need the police calling on you 🥴

OH come ON. This is not acceptable!! No one wants to hear your shitty music. Turn it down, stop being an arsehole to all around you. Doesn’t matter what time of day it is, you are being a shit.

If your child has ‘mental health issues’ triggered by loud music then it’s a decent suggestion as you can’t always control what others do. Some would argue posting on mumsnet rather than asking them to turn it down is more ridiculous than head phones or ear defenders.
