To call the police regarding neighbour's loud music?

Hi all. AIBU to want / call the police for neighbour blasting music? I could probably tolerate but DD9 is getting very upset.

It’s a pain in the arse but it’s been going on for an hour and it’s before 8pm on a Saturday where we’ve had nice weather recently.

Think it’s unreasonable to think of calling the police for this. They’ll not be interested and it’s a total waste of their time.

Put some headphones on your kid, her being very upset seems a bit of an excessive reaction, based on what you’ve said.

sciaticafanatica · 12/04/2025 19:57

You haven’t even asked if they will turn it down and it’s still early but you want to phone the police??
wow!

ChickenBananas · 12/04/2025 19:58

You sound psychotic. You haven't even asked, it's been 1 hour before 8pm and you're gonna take a hammer and cause a crime scene?!

Nicknacky · 12/04/2025 19:58

TalkToTheHand123 · 12/04/2025 19:57

I shouldn't have to. Should be common sense and respect.

Do you not think the police are a bit too busy to do what you could go and ask them yourself? To turn it down?

Bootskates · 12/04/2025 19:59

Is your DD distressed because she's feeding off you? You sound really wound up and you've said it's only been an hour and you're making vague threats about smashing their speakers or whatever...try and calm down and maybe DD will follow suit? You never know it might just be a BBQ or whatever and they'll take it inside in the next hour, it might be warm but evenings are still pretty chilly.

It’s also common sense to ask them to turn it down before thinking of calling the police. It’s 8pm on a sunny Saturday… you need to move away from people by the sound of it

NeilDiamondsBlowDry · 12/04/2025 20:01

It’s easy for people to say go and ask them to turn it down, but that can be very intimidating, I tried that once and was verbally abused and they also did it more so it’s not always that simple

Overthebow · 12/04/2025 20:01

I have a young child and a baby and I don’t think 8 pm on a Saturday night is a problem for music. You have neighbors, you need to put up with some noise. If it were 11pm that would be different. If it is really loud you could go and ask them politely to turn it down a bit, but the police aren’t going to do anything about a bit of garden music at 8pm.

Yeah but that doesn’t mean she can just phone the police instead, it would obviously make it worse too.

Oblahdee · 12/04/2025 20:02

If it's a loud speaker in a garden and it's been going on for over an hour then I think.you are justified in calling the council environmental team that deals with noise nuisance.

If the people are having a party in the garden they should have notified the people in surrounding houses out of courtesy to give them chance to go elsewhere whole the noise is going on.

NC28 · 12/04/2025 20:03

The more the OP posts, the more convinced I am that this is a fake situation.

A nine year old becoming “very upset” over sole music, the OP alluding that she’ll cave their speaker in (or their skull?) if she goes round, wanting to involve the cops at 8pm on a weekend night.

These people can’t be real.

beautyqueeen · 12/04/2025 20:04

It’s just 8pm on the first nice weekend of the year, unclench and teach your kid some resilience.

Twizzlelolly · 12/04/2025 20:04

It’s a civil matter. Need to report to environmental health or try speaking to your neighbours. Police will not get involved.

qandatime · 12/04/2025 20:04

I’d go and ask and if that doesn’t work then complain.. Think you’ll need to wait until 11. Spring day or not the entire street shouldn’t hear your music, there’s no need for it and makes you abit of an arsehole.

She’s not scared when she said she’s taking a hammer with her and that there might be a crime scene. 😂

LeoDiCapricorn · 12/04/2025 20:09

I’ve been in a battle for 2 years with my adjoining neighbour playing stupidly loud music. The police will do nothing. This is a council complaint. My neighbour has made life so miserable he doesn’t care.

I can well believe it to be true. We have a house next to us with zero soundproofing and when there are Airbnbers in we have to just put up with them having the TV or music on full blast and no idea how long for. It’s happened so often as soon as it starts up I can feel my heart start racing.

One pair of twats left the TV on full blast for hours to keep their dog calm while they were out. Another couple left their dog behind two days in the trot with the poor thing barking in such a distressed manner for up to 6 hours. Who the fuck takes their dog to an Airbnb and then just leaves it in a strange environment while they hit the big city??

The guy living there (who isn’t even the owner) has a grand piano in his unsoundproofed living room, that’s fun too…

The first nice weekend and who knows how many to follow over the spring and summer.

Do you take a hammer round there to smash things/people or threaten to phone the police about it at 8pm on a Saturday? Noisy neighbours aren’t in question, the OPs OTT responses are

Carclubcomplainer · 12/04/2025 20:12

It’s in the garden, from a loud speaker, not next door. Soundproofing isn’t an issue. Is it acceptable to play music from a loud speaker in a garden at any time where you live? It sure as heck isn’t here! How grim!

No, but I sometimes I’m so wound up I would genuinely love to. Sometimes it sets me so on edge I could scream. I don’t, because I’m not an obnoxious twat who imposes their noise on their neighbours.

BIWI · 12/04/2025 20:14

I’m sorry but although it may be annoying, all your ‘accusations’ of committing a crime against your neighbours are just ridiculous.

If it’s truly anti-social, then contacting the council is the way to go.

The air bnb people with the dog were idiots but the general air bnb hosts aren’t at fault, the other owner hasn’t soundproofed their house. If someone rents an air bnb it’s not shocking they make some noise. It’s crap for you but it doesn’t make everyone who stays there an obnoxious twat for having the tv on. Can you not soundproof from your side?

TalkToTheHand123 · 12/04/2025 20:22

They aren't even in the garden. They are in the next one down so speaker is on even louder. Police call suggested as council will be closed. DD9 has mental health issues with loud sounds.

It was a bit tongue in cheek, just emphasising how irritated I am. I'm sure they keep turning it up the more they drink.
