To think people eat one heck of a lot!

See it all over, online, on here, in real life.
People have to have three pretty substantial meals per day or they think they'll starve or not get enough nutrients.
A good amount of people, men especially, think a cold meal or salad based meal is not a real meal, or anywhere near enough to pass as one.
If it isn't huge, or hot, people often think it isn't value for money.

It isn't uncommon to hear 'rabbit food' or such when people choose cold or salad based meals.

Myself, I love both, and eat a warm meal most evenings, so don't have much of a horse in the race, but I do think it's a thing.
Not sure how other cultures go about it, would be interesting to find out.

Is it a UK specific thing, to always need a large hot meal several times per day?
A typical example is:
Porridge and berries of full breakfast english style etc for breakfast.
Baked potato with tuna, or salad for lunch, or soup with whatever and copious amounts of pulses.
Then cottage pie or something equally large for dinner.
Then, often, a later meal, give or take.
And a lot of us are still hungry after this, or snack in between, so WTF is going on!?

@Growlybear83no way ! At the same time you and I both thought .. massive chicken !!

But we’re obviously very greedy if Batchcookbabe can eke a chicken out for two months 😟

Not concerned about anyone's eating patterns.
Just notice a thing when I see it.
It's not my problem, but maybe it's why we are getting too thin as a culture !

Big hot meals are a thing, several times a day, or people claim to be starving and have to go on a weird exclusionary diet.

I know I'm not the only one who thinks this, only have to see other threads.
Wanna pretend this is odd? Have at it!

As a non-Brit, British people are notorious for their sandwich lunches, which are considered poor food.

RedHelenB · 10/04/2025 22:15

Both sets of grandparents had a fried breakfast every morning and a hot lunch and tea And they all lived to a decent age.

My husband and I had this discussion earlier. He thinks it’s still too soon. I say not. I may have to check out what Monty has to say about it.

That’s a very sensible plan. Let’s wait until Monty had shared his wisdom tomorrow Wink

Renamed · 10/04/2025 22:16

I’ll take the soup with whatever and copious amounts of pulses please

(Otherwise with no pulses and no whatever it would be… water?)

MightAsWellBeGretel · 10/04/2025 22:16

No, it's not a 'UK specific' thing.

I've never heard of a porridge that's a full English, either.

Do you think supermarkets would stock cereal if this were true? Or salad? What would happen to the poor cucumbers and cherry tomatoes?

Batshit.

MurdoMunro · 10/04/2025 22:17

I eat hot rabbit food. I get no judgment from either side.

Planted my sweet peas a bit early but they’re coming up now. Not tempted to nibble them tho even with my rabbit themed culinaries. Too cold.

PandoraSox · 10/04/2025 22:17

PoorUncleBarry · 10/04/2025 21:38

@AquaPeer good point. I also looked up the etymology of snow peas and I don't think snow has anything to do with them! I think most countries are fond of those pea/bean things that you can eat from a pod though. I quite like eating the pods, that might be weird in every country idk

A Portuguese restaurant near me seves a set menu which has peas as a side dish to everything.

I love peas. I heard that smashed peas are the new smashed avocado. Not sure if true?

Same. Makes me think of dog meal, or meal worms, or mealy-mouthed, though I do like that expression.

Or barium meal.

I hate it too. Ugh. “Come and have a meal.” No thanks.

I will do them on my window sill 1st.

I hate the word meal.

Same here.

I was cringing every time it was mentioned it that opening post.

WinterBones · 10/04/2025 22:18

you know why brits like hot food? Because its generally fucking cold.

My 206 cal porridge, cup a soup with a slice of toast, and cooked evening meal are not 'a heck of a lot' by any stretch of the imagination.. are they hot? yes, because ITS COLD OUT.

I tend to eat cold food when its hot, because its too hot to bloody cook.

I’ve branched out this year and have sown some perennial Sweet Peas. Took a while to germinate but they seem to be doing well now.

Switcher · 10/04/2025 22:20

Today I ate a protein shake, carbonara and some cheese and crackers. No idea what you are on about.

I’ve been tempted by those. Do they smell as good as the annuals?

TheHateIsNotGood · 10/04/2025 22:21

I actually agree with you OP, a lot of people DO eat shit-tons of stuff - and the traditional 3 meals a day concept from the days when people actually needed the calories to get through their working day are long gone.

Unless you put out the calories you don't need to stuff them down your neck 3 times a day. I do both physically exerting and sedentary work and need no more than 2 'meals' and a snack per day to keep going.

And so some days I can stuff my face with chocolate cake to make up for the calories I've missed, as well as enjoying a scrumtious salad. And I'm not 'special' with some form of metabolism that works really great , just a normal human being that gets aches and pains just lie every other 'normal range' person out there. I'm 62 so I'm not a newcomer to the 'diet'/weight concept.

wishiwasupahill · 10/04/2025 22:21

BunnyRuddington · 10/04/2025 21:37

That’s a really good idea. I’ve not planted any yet but DF lines to eat them fresh from the plant. Do you think I’ve left it too late?

What is all this about peas? What have I missed?

BunnyRuddington · 10/04/2025 22:22

vodkaredbullgirl · 10/04/2025 22:18

I will do them on my window sill 1st.

That’s where mine are sitting now, along with my sunflowers.

Tomato plants are there too although I fear I’ve bought them too early, they’ve grown vigorously over the last week and they are beginning to remind me of a famous John Wyndham novel…

Bepo77 · 10/04/2025 22:22

I like a cold full English porridge three times a day personally

As a non-Brit, British people are notorious for their sandwich lunches, which are considered poor food.

On my list of the best things I have ever eaten was a brie and butter baguette in Lille. So simple and delicious. That is basically a sandwich, isn't it?

I have some sweet pea seeds that I am planning to sow outside. I like living dangerously.

"Dead," you say? 🧐

My tomato plants are doing great in my window sill, My beans, carrots and parsnips are in a small green house, outside, they are sheltered so are doing ok.

Not sure on the scent. DMIL grew them so it’s sort of a tribute to her. The ones she grew were always reliable though and still reappear each spring even though she’s been gone a while.

No idea. Someone started up thread and I just rolled in like the sheep that I am. I really love sweet peas, joyous things. And too many people were saying ‘meal’ which is one of those words that puts me right off my dinner.
