To think people eat one heck of a lot!

See it all over, online, on here, in real life.
People have to have three pretty substantial meals per day or they think they'll starve or not get enough nutrients.
A good amount of people, men especially, think a cold meal or salad based meal is not a real meal, or anywhere near enough to pass as one.
If it isn't huge, or hot, people often think it isn't value for money.

It isn't uncommon to hear 'rabbit food' or such when people choose cold or salad based meals.

Myself, I love both, and eat a warm meal most evenings, so don't have much of a horse in the race, but I do think it's a thing.
Not sure how other cultures go about it, would be interesting to find out.

Is it a UK specific thing, to always need a large hot meal several times per day?
A typical example is:
Porridge and berries of full breakfast english style etc for breakfast.
Baked potato with tuna, or salad for lunch, or soup with whatever and copious amounts of pulses.
Then cottage pie or something equally large for dinner.
Then, often, a later meal, give or take.
And a lot of us are still hungry after this, or snack in between, so WTF is going on!?

I'm going to do my peas.

That’s a really good idea. I’ve not planted any yet but DF lines to eat them fresh from the plant. Do you think I’ve left it too late?

Oblomov25 · 10/04/2025 21:37

What nationality are you op? What are you used to eating?

I might have some watermelon, a small portion of chicken and salad, spaghetti and meatballs/ steak and salad, pie and steamed veg.

Is it the hot you object to?

Yawn. Loads of threads over the years state how fab the Italian or French food is. It is. But the no others post about how much coffee the Italians drink, how some of the French women don't have the best relationship with food and eat little in order to stay in shape, but in a pressurised way

Hot meal. Not warm meal. Poorly trained GAI at work here.

Snowjive2 · 10/04/2025 21:36

This. And with the word “warm” in front of it…boak.

Better than a moist meal.

Ive never associated meal with mealworm before…

PoorUncleBarry · 10/04/2025 21:38

@AquaPeer good point. I also looked up the etymology of snow peas and I don't think snow has anything to do with them! I think most countries are fond of those pea/bean things that you can eat from a pod though. I quite like eating the pods, that might be weird in every country idk

I think yourself needs to get a life

AcquadiP · 10/04/2025 21:42

Porridge with berries isn't a "large meal" but it is a healthy breakfast. Likewise, a baked potato for lunch is a healthy choice not a "large meal." To me a "large meal" is a Sunday lunch with all the trimmings and I certainly don't eat three of those in a day. And yes there are other nations who eat large meals, the Italians for example, though again once a day, not three a day.

Backagainformorepunishment · 10/04/2025 21:44

I think if you are concerned about people eating " a heck of a lot" you should be more concerned about people not eating meals as such but feeding all day on constant junk food snacks.

MossLover · 10/04/2025 21:45

Any time I go out to eat or order takeaway, I’m always surprised by the portion sizes. I hardly ever finish a whole meal, and usually have another in leftovers. Suits me just fine; it’s like a two-for-one deal.

Recently I’ve had so much on my mind that I’ll forget to eat for long stretches of time. It’s been good for keeping my weight down, but not so great for getting my nutritional needs met or staying hydrated…I know some people are the opposite, where being stressed/preoccupied results in them over-eating and chugging calorie-filled, sugary drinks.

The weather looks good tomorrow. Think I might plant out my sweatpeas.

mine are looking ready to plant out but worried about the snails eating them! I seem to have an infestation of them!

anonymous98 · 10/04/2025 21:45

I'm hungry, sorry

Lilyhatesjaz · 10/04/2025 21:45

One of my jar of pasta sauce suggests you can use it to make a lighter meal.
I cringe every time I read it.
The only person I know who eats 3 hot meals a day comes from the far East.
A lot of British people eat sandwiches for lunch. And cereal for breakfast.

Enderwhere · 10/04/2025 21:45

you know in Paris women are satisfied by just simply smelling a grape. That's why they are so slim and we are all big fat fatties

APATEKPHILLIPEWATCH · 10/04/2025 21:45

Oh yay I love competitive undereating threads

MN really brings out people who need help for their eating disorders

AppleWhiskers · 10/04/2025 21:48

Not concerned about anyone's eating patterns.
Just notice a thing when I see it.
It's not my problem, but maybe it's why we are getting too thin as a culture !

Big hot meals are a thing, several times a day, or people claim to be starving and have to go on a weird exclusionary diet.

I know I'm not the only one who thinks this, only have to see other threads.
Wanna pretend this is odd? Have at it!

I hate the word meal.

Same. Makes me think of dog meal, or meal worms, or mealy-mouthed, though I do like that expression.

You’ve seen other threads pondering the cultural impact of hot food?! When?!

What do you usually eat in a day op?

Getting too thin now ? Are you ok ?

I'm going to do my peas.

I did mine yesterday.

In terms of meals, I tend to either eat larger lunch and a smaller dinner or visa versa.

I eat a few fruit based snacks. Rarely eat take out or anything highly processed.

Still a bit fat.

ghostyslovesheets · 10/04/2025 21:51

Gosh if I ate all that I’d be stuffed for a month 🙄😂
