To think people eat one heck of a lot!

See it all over, online, on here, in real life.
People have to have three pretty substantial meals per day or they think they'll starve or not get enough nutrients.
A good amount of people, men especially, think a cold meal or salad based meal is not a real meal, or anywhere near enough to pass as one.
If it isn't huge, or hot, people often think it isn't value for money.

It isn't uncommon to hear 'rabbit food' or such when people choose cold or salad based meals.

Myself, I love both, and eat a warm meal most evenings, so don't have much of a horse in the race, but I do think it's a thing.
Not sure how other cultures go about it, would be interesting to find out.

Is it a UK specific thing, to always need a large hot meal several times per day?
A typical example is:
Porridge and berries of full breakfast english style etc for breakfast.
Baked potato with tuna, or salad for lunch, or soup with whatever and copious amounts of pulses.
Then cottage pie or something equally large for dinner.
Then, often, a later meal, give or take.
And a lot of us are still hungry after this, or snack in between, so WTF is going on!?

I’ve branched out this year and have sown some perennial Sweet Peas. Took a while to germinate but they seem to be doing well now.

Now this is interesting. I didn't know such a thing existed.

I like a cold full English porridge three times a day personally

Do you have many guests? Grin

Agreed. (I thought it was just me.😙)

Me too, for 41 years I thought I was alone in my hatred of that word - until now!

I hate the word meal.

I was just about to type that OP is saying the word meal too many times. 😁 I don’t like it either.

Strange thread.

I never eat 3 large /substantial meals a day, and I know many who don’t either,

Not sure on the scent. DMIL grew them so it’s sort of a tribute to her. The ones she grew were always reliable though and still reappear each spring even though she’s been gone a while.

That is lovely.

Nothing worse than any porridge hot or cold lol.

No idea. Someone started up thread and I just rolled in like the sheep that I am. I really love sweet peas, joyous things. And too many people were saying ‘meal’ which is one of those words that puts me right off my dinner.

Truly joyous. Can’t wait to see big fat bumble bees crawling all over them!

SiobhanSharpe · 10/04/2025 22:26

I don't think the perennial sweet peas are nearly as good as annual ones, they don't have the same fragrance, the only colour is pink and the flowers themselves seem coarser5 compared with the older varieties.
Home grown sugar snap peas are superb and you don't have to worry about the nasty little larvae inside when you shell them, as you do with garden peas.

feelinhopeful · 10/04/2025 21:45

mine are looking ready to plant out but worried about the snails eating them! I seem to have an infestation of them!

Eat the snails with plenty of garlic butter 🐌 🐌

That’s why you’re too thin as a culture.

Yoicks! Tally Ho! Gadzooks!

Gettingbysomehow · 10/04/2025 22:27

This is why people are so fat now. Constant eating and snacking. This is how I got to 15 stone. I've lost all the weight now and keep it off by never snacking and eating two modest meals a day.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 10/04/2025 22:28

So today I have discovered 2 new insults that I shall relish using

Dust filled pig and
Toilet goblin

I have also decided I best get out and buy some peas ready to plant at the weekend.

MummyJ36 · 10/04/2025 22:29

Well…you sound fun at parties OP.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 10/04/2025 22:24

"Dead," you say? 🧐

Well, very sad looking and I'm not sure they'll spring back. They were going great guns when I planted them out.

Is it too late for sugar snaps or am I ok to sow them this weekend?

Mumtobabyhavoc · 10/04/2025 22:29

@WinterBones

Two hundred and six calories? Are you sure?
Not 205? 207?
Sounds a bit suspect to me...🧐

Two meals?

I restrict myself to two peas a day. Plus an extra one on Sundays.

Americanlaw · 10/04/2025 22:30

Can I add the word ‘beverage’
As in my childhood friend would say,’meal and hot beverage’ eeww.
still makes me think of the hot bovril from the ‘beverage dispenser’ spilt on the concrete swimming pool floor, the smell. Yikes.

Spelling errors, do what you want with that Grin You will anyway.

Three attempts to fix your spelling but not your grammar..

Hilarious I found this on this thread but....Do you actually think we're safe to plant them out? Mine are going good on the kitchen windowsill but I'm nervous to get them out!

As long as the ground isn't frozen, go for it.

TheHateIsNotGood · 10/04/2025 22:30

I wouldn't be eating Sweet Peas but they're lovely plants to grow as they look super nice and can smell better than any scented candle. And they're tempermental in their early stages of growth and can be late in their output - and we've had a couple of crap years for growing them.

Climbing French Beans are my go to for edibles - look nice, climb up anything, grow like a motherfucker and taste brill with no strings like Runners.

Somehow I feel that DH should be renamed the Toilet Goblin but I don’t think that’s the most striking of his habits…

Definitely not too late! Hope the mice don't eat them!
