To think people eat one heck of a lot!

See it all over, online, on here, in real life.
People have to have three pretty substantial meals per day or they think they'll starve or not get enough nutrients.
A good amount of people, men especially, think a cold meal or salad based meal is not a real meal, or anywhere near enough to pass as one.
If it isn't huge, or hot, people often think it isn't value for money.

It isn't uncommon to hear 'rabbit food' or such when people choose cold or salad based meals.

Myself, I love both, and eat a warm meal most evenings, so don't have much of a horse in the race, but I do think it's a thing.
Not sure how other cultures go about it, would be interesting to find out.

Is it a UK specific thing, to always need a large hot meal several times per day?
A typical example is:
Porridge and berries of full breakfast english style etc for breakfast.
Baked potato with tuna, or salad for lunch, or soup with whatever and copious amounts of pulses.
Then cottage pie or something equally large for dinner.
Then, often, a later meal, give or take.
And a lot of us are still hungry after this, or snack in between, so WTF is going on!?

GO AND PLANT YOUR SWEET PEAS YOU BIGLAZYFATARSE @BunnyRuddington WHAT ARE DOING SITTING THERE EATING ONE HOT MEAL AFTER ANOTHER LIKE SOME KIND OF 1950S NORTHERN STEELWORKER??? EH??

People will call you a dee-dar, could you imagine? You’ll be fired off the Dunkirk flyover.

Am writing this while tucking into my big ole plate of garlic butter chicken and sauté potatoes. Bloody lovely it is too.

Just back to confirm that the Sweetpeas are still on the windowsill and I am indeed still on my Big Lazy Fat Arse! We had sausage chips and green beans as that’s all that DH can seem to cook these days. Have no idea why, he used to be a better cook than me.

Jokes aside though I once babysat a friends twins aged 9. Both of them were grossly obese, huge bellies etc. Those two mithered me all evening for snacks, cakes, chocolate biscuits. They'd eaten a big dinner before I got there. They had complete meltdowns when I said no. Their parents just let them eat all day.
I felt incredibly sad for them.

Still not planted out my Sweetpeas. Will someone tell me to do it please.

PUT THEM IN THE GROUND DO IT DO IT DO IT DO IT

Will that work? They're going to go all straggly if you leave them inside. Get them pinched out, and get them out there. Couple of glugs from the watering can. Enjoy.

Then you can come back inside for some steaming sausage with optional other stuff you mentioned

MurdoMunro · 16/04/2025 20:52

Well done on trying a sweeter approach there @fgswhywouldIdothat, luring her with sausages, good call. I went straight for @BunnyRuddington ’s jugular, thought the shock would tough-love her into doing it but I failed.

UndertheCedartree · 16/04/2025 20:56

I don't really know what many other people eat except my brother's family as we have stayed over with them. I can't say either of our families eat 3/4 large hot meals plus snacks per day.

Mind you, I don't think a bowl of porridge with berries is a particularly large breakfast. I do eat that often or Greek yogurt, berries and nuts for breakfast. A common breakfast for my brother's family is bagels with avocado. A full English would be an occasional thing at the weekend. None of us would be up for it at the early breakfast time we have during the week. My lunch is usually soup in winter and salad in summer, occasionally a sandwich or maybe an omelette, but I often miss lunch as I'm busy. My DC are actually bad at skipping breakfast and not eating much lunch either. My 13yo might have a snack in the afternoon. My 17yo will eat a decent dinner and sometimes some leftovers or a yogurt and fruit in the evening. My 13yo is quite picky so doesn't always eat a decent dinner- it depends what it is. My brother's family tend to have a good dinner in the evening too but neither of us have huge portions.

Sometimes dinners people describe on here do sound quite large to me but not really other meals. However, I was flamed for saying the portions you get in Hello Fresh are large. I buy a box for 2 but it feeds 3 of us. So maybe we aren't representative of most families.

Our family is vegetarian and my brother's is vegan so we do eat our fair share of 'rabbit food' - I have had the odd person make that comment but generally they were the kind of person that ate quite a rubbish diet. I would imagine the average 'omnivore' eats plenty of 'rabbit food' alongside the meat.

I suspect the lovely @BunnyRuddington with the Sweet Pea window sill constipation issues is a Southerner. I find they respond well to the softly, softly sausage chat.

fgswhywouldIdothat · 16/04/2025 21:03

@BunnyRuddington has gone v quiet. Maybe she's out there in the dark in her wellies and nightie planting the little buggers? whadyathink @MurdoMunro?

MurdoMunro · 16/04/2025 21:17

Oh I do hope so. It’s a sort of dark and windy Heathcliffe-on-the-moors night here. Her nightie will be billowing and the neighbours will be suspecting witchery is afoot.

Could you come back 10ish when I’m settled in bed but too restless to sleep and do more softly, softly sausage chat please?

fgswhywouldIdothat · 16/04/2025 21:42

No I am not trying any post-10pm soft slinky sausage chat with you @MurdoMunro as you are clearly a gristly Northerner, and it would likely tip you over into some kind of clan uprising. You'd be crossing the border with your secateurs in a flash, slaying Sweet Pea refuseniks and diet obsessives* *. And currently I am away from my Northern enclave working in London, and I don't want to be suffocated with a grow-bag or trussed up with garden twine just because I happen to be here. So no sausages for you.

nomas · 16/04/2025 21:48

soup with whatever and copious amounts of pulses.

Do you mean lentil soup, OP? It wouldn’t be lentil soup without pulses.

Fekkin rumbled. Bastit.

fgswhywouldIdothat · 16/04/2025 22:03

Is bastit bastard in a quaint Scottish accent, or are you invoking (according to Google) the Egyptian goddess of the home, domesticity, women's secrets, cats, fertility, and childbirth? Either way, have you ordered your "trombone" squash seeds yet? I have. They arrived before I left for this London trip. I am v excited

BunnyRuddington · 16/04/2025 22:15

I’m back from my billowy nightie adventures although I’m sad to report that it was just me and the DDog in the garden.

The DHedgehog has reappeared and DDog is obsessed but also needed a wee. Cue me in said billowy nightie trying to facitate wee and make sure DHedgog survives for another night.

Sweetpeas are still on the windowsill. I’m a failure in both the Sweetpea and being a true Northerner departments.

fgswhywouldIdothat · 16/04/2025 22:19

@BunnyRuddington I am so glad. I feel that the DSweet DPeas need to go out in the garden with the DHedgehog, who frankly will be fine and needs your attention much less than they do.

YouFetidMoppet · 16/04/2025 22:42

I'm a bot using machine learning to understand human eating patterns from this thread.

From this thread I have learnt that we should be eating a hot bowl of peas three times a day, but not a warm bowl of peas as that is just wrong.

fgswhywouldIdothat · 16/04/2025 22:47

@YouFetidMoppet no no no, your DSweetDPeas need to be out right now in the garden, cold though they and you in your billowy nightie may be

While being of the north-north I moved to south to the place that they call the north. That was my attempt to blend in using the language of my adoptive people. I can never truly land it, but then neither can they when they try sing the song of my people.

I went to bed with great sausage plans for today but things went shit-shaped so lunch was a hot cross bun and a packet of prawn cocktail crisps.

Also, while being the wild (not) north we do have some cultural appropriation from the south - me and the dMIL are hitting up the garden centre at the weekend in search of comedy squash seeds. I showed her the picture and she wants in.

Blessed be the Sweetpeas as there Easter Sunday journey has managed to elevate the windowsill constipation. That just makes lord room for more plants though?

BunnyRuddington · 21/04/2025 06:20
