What would you HONESTLY do in this situation?

Say you ordered a few items from a big online shop (clothing), then successfully cancelled the order, and was refunded.

A few days later, you ordered a single item of clothing from the same place. Today that item was delivered, however they had also sent the items you had cancelled and was refunded for (probably around £120 worth of stuff).

Would you contact them about it or would you keep quiet, see if they emailed you about it and if you didn’t hear anything say 3-4 weeks down the line, just keep the items as normal? This is a place you regularly order from, spending between £300-400 a month.

What would you HONESTLY do?

Contact them.

It’s just brewing an issue for further down the line otherwise.

stretchitout · 09/04/2025 12:26

This did happen to me and I was honest. I was tempted not to be but in the end I had to be. And they let me have them free!

Hoardasurass · 09/04/2025 12:26

Contact them and be honest

TheJollyMoose · 09/04/2025 12:27

I would honestly tell them their mistake and have them arranged to send back because I’m not a thief.

EBearhug · 09/04/2025 12:27

I would contact them. But I suspect many others wouldn't.

If they said, "keep them," I'd donate to charity, or I'd return them as requested, but point out it should be at their expense/my convenience, as it was not my error.

Hoppinggreen · 09/04/2025 12:27

I would tell them
Otherwise its theft

Gundogday · 09/04/2025 12:27

Has the refund actually gone through and entered your bank account, or have they they just told you that you’re being refunded?

PaintYourAssLikeRembrandt · 09/04/2025 12:27

I wouldn't say anything and see what happens, and I wouldn't feel guilty bout keeping the clothes if they didn't contact me either.

If it was a small business my answer would be different.

Swiftie1878 · 09/04/2025 12:28

Be honest and send the items back.
The alternative is theft, whatever you tell yourself.

Why would you donate to charity when it’s clothing you wanted and they said to keep them? That’s a bit bizarre

Exactly the same scenario with me. Three times! Debenhams, New Look & an expensive independent jewellers.

I donated the items to the Women's Refuge.

I completely agree about if it was a small business, there would be no hesitation!

I would contact them and return the items. I have done it before when refunded items have turned up.

You’re still a thief whether the business is big or small.

lunaemma · 09/04/2025 12:29

I had this with some expensive candles, they sent them to me twice. I contacted them, they said thanks for your honesty and keep them

FionnulaTheCooler · 09/04/2025 12:29

I had this with Matalan and they told me just to keep it but it was just one duplicate item not multiple. I'd contact them and tell them I'll happily return them if they send a courier to collect since it was their error, I wouldn't be wasting my own time faffing around with going to the post office or parcel collection place.

This - at some point in the future, it will crop up, so best sort it out now

Saveafun · 09/04/2025 12:30

I think you'll find you get charged.

But, honestly, I think I'd wait...

Why would you want the clothes if you tried to return them? Donating them if the company says to keep them and you don't want them is the right thing to do isn't it?

It depends if you wanted them or not, in my case I did, but I had some expenses that cropped up and I could no longer afford them at that moment in time so cancelled and was going to rebuy at next pay day

OP posts:
Greycheck · 09/04/2025 12:34

In all honesty, I'd probably end up keeping them through my own laziness.

I would be unlikely to contact them and I'd have the intention of sending them back but would never get round to it which is why I always time out for refunds.

So theft by best intentions.

Cushionseams · 09/04/2025 12:34

I'd contact them once to arrange collection, but I wouldn't chase them up about it. And I'd expect them to pick up the item at my convenience.

Coali · 09/04/2025 12:35

This has happened to me a few times and I contacted them. Once the value was low and they said to keep it. The other times they have arranged collection.

I don’t think it matters whether it’s a big or small business, the people working there aren’t on megabucks so if profits fall, staff are the first to go.
