What would you HONESTLY do in this situation?

Say you ordered a few items from a big online shop (clothing), then successfully cancelled the order, and was refunded.

A few days later, you ordered a single item of clothing from the same place. Today that item was delivered, however they had also sent the items you had cancelled and was refunded for (probably around £120 worth of stuff).

Would you contact them about it or would you keep quiet, see if they emailed you about it and if you didn’t hear anything say 3-4 weeks down the line, just keep the items as normal? This is a place you regularly order from, spending between £300-400 a month.

What would you HONESTLY do?

Be honest and send the items back.
The alternative is theft, whatever you tell yourself.

It would be theft.
Why are you even asking us?

In all honesty, I'd probably end up keeping them through my own laziness.

I would be unlikely to contact them and I'd have the intention of sending them back but would never get round to it which is why I always time out for refunds.

So theft by best intentions.

I have a physical disability so I probably wouldn’t get round to actually taking it anywhere, they would definitely have to arrange a courier to collect!

I would let them know. Most likely they’ll let you keep them anyway. That way you would enjoy them more.

There’s no point starting a bragging thread about £120 worth of free clothee, people have been given free stuff worth thousands of £.

You’re still a thief whether the business is big or small.

I'm not going to waste my time chasing about after a big business has made a mistake they will probably never notice, and won't impact them at all.

I would bother if it was a small business because it would have a huge impact on them.

I'm absolutely OK with my moral line being drawn there 🤷🏽‍♀️

sandrapinchedmysandwich · 09/04/2025 12:37

You obviously requested a refund for a reason. Probably because you did not like them as much as you thought you did or did not really need / want them. I would contact them. You don't want to be charged later for items you had actually decided against anyway

Allthegoodhorses · 09/04/2025 12:37

I would contact them and let them know the mistake. I very recently ordered a £350 air dryer from Lakeland. It was marked as delivered but did not turn up here. I then rang them and they sent a replacement out. In the meantime the people who lived at the house the original item had been sent too (same name and same first part of postcode) popped round with the original item. So now I had two of them. I messaged them to say what had happened and they arranged for a courier to pickup. I must admit they seemed very surprised!

IridescentRainbow · 09/04/2025 12:38

I would contact them. I don’t steal from other people.

Yup, you’re absolutely okay with being a thief.

I would contact them and let them know because I’m not a thief - even when no-one is watching

SheGotOffThePlane · 09/04/2025 12:39

This has happened to me on many occasions, believe it or not. The one time I kept it was when they failed to send a courier to pick it up, it sat bagged up in the corner of my living room for 4 weeks then I opened it again and kept it.
Every other time I have returned the item.

Oh, except once, and it was Christmas lights. I got a notification that they had a stock issue and the order had been cancelled, so I wasn't expecting them to arrive. They came 3 weeks later and were already on my tree when I realised I had been refunded. This was the days before internet banking on your phone though.

Why would you donate to charity when it’s clothing you wanted and they said to keep them? That’s a bit bizarre

But surely I'd you wanted them then you wouldn't have cancelled the order.

Something similar happened to me with furniture. We ordered a lovely chair and something went a bit haywire and we ended up receiving a second a few weeks later. I loved the chair, wanted two of them and had the space but we didn't want to pay for two. It was a good few hundred quid but we did contact them and send it back.

They wouldn’t have to do anything. If you refused to send them back they would just charge you for it.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 09/04/2025 12:41

I’d email them and let them know. State you can not get to a post office /shop to return so you will need them to collect the items they sent to you by mistake. Don’t chase up the message but keep a note of it. Be clear in your message you have confirmation you cancelled in time to not have them sent.

They are most likely to either offer to collect them or let you keep them. You might not get any response.

I completely agree about if it was a small business, there would be no hesitation!

Just out of interest how big does a businesses turnover have to be for you to steal from it?

HoskinsChoice · 09/04/2025 12:42

I have morals and I'm not a thief so I would tell them.

They turn over 32 million pound a year…

I'd be honest At Christmas Amazon refunded us for 3 large items we had kept, no intention of sending them backI. contacted them and they said keep tge refund and the item.

Very well put! It's frightening how many people would happily steal the items.

So? That means you can steal from them?

Friends1996 · 09/04/2025 12:42

But that doesn't answer the question does it
How much does a business have to turn over before you think its ok to steal from it?

BobbyBiscuits · 09/04/2025 12:44

If I really did use them as much as you say I'd be concerned they'd realise further down the line. I'd also probably feel loyalty to this company a bit if I used them so much, so I think I would maybe say something. Also I'd presumably not be too poor if I could spend that much on the first place on a monthly basis.

But if I was flat broke and knew I could sell the stuff on fairly easily and it would mean I could pay my rent/feed my family then I'd probably say fuck all.

PineappleChicken · 09/04/2025 12:44

If I had already cancelled the order then obviously I didn’t want the items so would send them back. Also, it’s stealing and stealing is morally a really shitty thing to do.

coxesorangepippin · 09/04/2025 12:44

I'd not say anything
