Say you ordered a few items from a big online shop (clothing), then successfully cancelled the order, and was refunded.

A few days later, you ordered a single item of clothing from the same place. Today that item was delivered, however they had also sent the items you had cancelled and was refunded for (probably around £120 worth of stuff).

Would you contact them about it or would you keep quiet, see if they emailed you about it and if you didn’t hear anything say 3-4 weeks down the line, just keep the items as normal? This is a place you regularly order from, spending between £300-400 a month.

What would you HONESTLY do?

I’d be honest and contact them. I’d worry that someone might lose their job and I couldn’t live with that.

Offtobuttonmoontovisitmrspoon · 09/04/2025 12:45

I had this with m and s. I contacted them and they said to keep them (no good to me as too big!).

nonmerci99 · 09/04/2025 12:45

I’d contact them. This has happened to me in the past more than once — big department stores tend to tell you to keep the items, because it’s too much of a hassle for them accepting items back they’ve already sent out, since there is usually no record on their side that the items were sold. Smaller shops send a prepaid postage label so the items can be returned.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 09/04/2025 12:46

I would contact them and tell them to arrange a pick up. I would not put myself to any inconvenience to return them, though.

we ve been through something similar with Nespresso and that is what we did. They did eventually pick it up. ( though we live fairly rural, so no problems with leaving things outside, and all our delivery people know us)

LetTheWindBlowBackYourHair · 09/04/2025 12:46

You're spending £300-£400 a month of clothes?! Who on earth or what on earth are you clothing?!

CandidExpert · 09/04/2025 12:47

HoskinsChoice · 09/04/2025 12:43

Very well put! It's frightening how many people would happily steal the items.

It's strange how people wouldn't brazenly walk out of a shop with the stolen items but they'd happily keep items they haven't paid for.

Theft is theft as others have said.

Sure, there's an error that's not the OP's fault but I do think there's a basic level of moral decency in which you should alert the company that you have received goods you haven't paid for and either offer to pay if you wish to keep them or ask for a return to be arranged.

Mintearo7 · 09/04/2025 12:48

Keep it - big businesses factor in these small (in their eyes) mistakes. They might even have software/AI that recognises you are a regular high spending customer and decides it’s not worth them trying to rectify their mistake, as they might lose you as a customer.

PaintYourAssLikeRembrandt · 09/04/2025 12:27

I wouldn't say anything and see what happens, and I wouldn't feel guilty bout keeping the clothes if they didn't contact me either.

If it was a small business my answer would be different.

If the business is successful then it somehow absolves you of any guilt?

Ok to take from someone if they can afford it?

Onthelinetoday · 09/04/2025 12:49

Once upon a time I would’ve contacted them. I was sent a duplicate coffee order once and then when I called them to let them know (assuming they would let me keep it) they said I could have it but they charged me full whack. I swapped my coffee order following that to a new brand.

now I would just leave it, and if they contacted me say I’d been on holiday and I’ll check when I’m back.

SaladSandwichesForTea · 09/04/2025 12:49

Honestly I'd stop spending £300-£400 a month.

You're not entitled to free stuff because of an error.

TY78910 · 09/04/2025 12:49

you cancelled the order, you didn’t return it. There was obviously a mix up with the system where the order had already been packaged and delivery was initiated but the cancellation didn’t systematically stop it. So in my eyes it is stealing - it’s not like they sent a duplicate order after you had returned the original items.

FionnulaTheCooler · 09/04/2025 12:29

I had this with Matalan and they told me just to keep it but it was just one duplicate item not multiple. I'd contact them and tell them I'll happily return them if they send a courier to collect since it was their error, I wouldn't be wasting my own time faffing around with going to the post office or parcel collection place.

This! I wouldn't go out of my way to post them back, they would need to arrange it as it was their error

Ohthedaffodils · 09/04/2025 12:50

Similar happened to me with Seasalt. I ordered 2 tee shirts and when I received them there were 3 in the package.
I contacted Seasalt and sent 1 back. If you keep the items it’s theft.

Friends1996 · 09/04/2025 12:35

I have a physical disability so I probably wouldn’t get round to actually taking it anywhere, they would definitely have to arrange a courier to collect!

I would contact them and ask them to send someone to collect them. They can then decide whether to do that or tell you to keep them.

Brefugee · 09/04/2025 12:51

I would contact them and ask for a free return shipping label.

If they let me keep them? lucky me.

singlewhitetrashheap · 09/04/2025 12:52

lmao

All these holy people saying they'd let the company know. What a load of bollocks. You'd keep them and you know it.

DontCallMeKidDontCallMeBaby · 09/04/2025 12:52

It happened to me with ASOS, I contacted them, and they told me to keep them.

Even with a huge retailer, I’d always be honest. I used to work for one, and stock loss impacted our staffing budget. Higher stock loss, meant fewer hours for us. (ironic really, because not enough staff was a major reason for our high stock loss!)

Dontlletmedownbruce · 09/04/2025 12:53

I would contact them and say they are at my house and available for collection. I wouldn't put myself out returning them nor would I follow it up if they don't reply. It's their error and up to them to resolve. I'd hang onto the items until it's sorted.

This happened to me last year. I ordered 2 items for presents but they sent 3. Each was about £40. It was a small business and i contacted them straight away. They told me I could just keep it, I suspect it wasn't worth the cost and inconvenience of returning.

TrixieFatell · 09/04/2025 12:53

I'd contact them. My anxiety is too much and I'd worry they'd find out I had stolen from them.

PaintYourAssLikeRembrandt · 09/04/2025 12:53

toomuchfaff · 09/04/2025 12:49

It's OK not to bother to chase a huge business up on their own mistake, yes.

Tbh I never even bother to send my own returns back, so I wouldn't put the time and effort into getting this sorted when it's not my fault either.

Sleepington · 09/04/2025 12:53

If you cancelled the order it’s because the items don’t suit and you don’t want them so I can’t see the point of keeping them now.

If you do want them, I’d wait to see if the money was taken from your account again. If not, I’d keep it (not wear it) until they contacted me about it.

riverislandjeans · 09/04/2025 12:54

I'd wait to see if they contacted me.

I would not
Good user name by the way

Sugarfish · 09/04/2025 12:56

By law you are supposed to contact them if they sent something by mistake. And they are supposed to arrange a collection for free and at no detriment to you, and there is apparently a deadline for this. Probably why most just let you keep the items.

Its only if something is truly unsolicited that you can keep it.

Honestly i’d probably just keep the stuff. I know I’m not supposed to admit to that though.

FairlyTired · 09/04/2025 12:56

HappyKatieA · 09/04/2025 12:45

I’d be honest and contact them. I’d worry that someone might lose their job and I couldn’t live with that.

Someone's far more likely to lose their job for the error being highlighted than a random stocktaking showing up a loss they can't pinpoint.
