Say you ordered a few items from a big online shop (clothing), then successfully cancelled the order, and was refunded.

A few days later, you ordered a single item of clothing from the same place. Today that item was delivered, however they had also sent the items you had cancelled and was refunded for (probably around £120 worth of stuff).

Would you contact them about it or would you keep quiet, see if they emailed you about it and if you didn’t hear anything say 3-4 weeks down the line, just keep the items as normal? This is a place you regularly order from, spending between £300-400 a month.

What would you HONESTLY do?

They turn over 32 million pound a year…

Look, you’re a thief. Stop with all the attempts to mitigate. If you’re ok with being dishonest and a thief, that’s ok, just own it. But accept that not everyone is dishonest and a thief like you, even though you would clearly like to believe that they are. 🤷‍♀️

Bon Marché was turning over £200m pa when it went into administration in 2020.

Don’t be fooled by the millions. Customer returns are hurting fashion retailers who operate online.

You are just bringing closer a time when we will buy our clothes from Amazon.

MrsSunshine2b · 09/04/2025 13:07

It's their mistake and up to them to chase it. I'm not their admin assistant.

I'd put them away in a cupboard for a couple of weeks and if they've not contacted me I'd just keep the stuff.

Doolallies · 09/04/2025 13:07

I would contact them. Just bc it’s a big business eg John Lewis or Sainsbury’s doesn’t mean they aren’t struggling right now. I’ve worked for big businesses and things like this do really sting their bottom line no matter what people tell themselves

cloudydays2 · 09/04/2025 13:07

Being honest, for that amount I would contact them especially if you use them regularly. Although if it was one item I probably wouldn't.

I think there is a phenomenon that exists where people think if I’m doing something then other people must do it too.

meganorks · 09/04/2025 13:09

I would do as you say and keep them for a while and see if they realise and make sure you definitely have been refunded.

I once ordered a beauty product Amazon and they sent 6. They were in a box so I guess they were sat on a shelf unopened looking like a single item. And the box was still really small with 6 in. I kept them. I doubt Amazon has any real capacity to deal with such an issue. And I also couldn't be arsed to sort it out.

Turnover isn’t profit, you could turnover whatever number you want and make zero profit. That’s because costs have to come out of turnover.

I think if you keep the items you’re not a good person

Punzel · 09/04/2025 13:09

I’d probably like to keep them, but my mother didn’t raise a thief.
Amazon have sent me expensive things twice and I’ve always let them know (and they’ve always said keep it). Toast also sent me probably 1k worth of clothes and homeware when I’d just ordered a t shirt, they did collect it though!
However, I am not struggling financially to feed my children - if I was I would see it as a gift from the universe and sell it on.

Overthemountaim · 09/04/2025 13:09

Similar thing happened to me, was big multinational clothing chain, goods didn’t turn up, got refund, then they did turn up. Was about £100 value I think, stuff for kids, I dithered and dh laughed and said ‘sometimes you lose, sometimes you win’ -I took it as one of life’s little wins…

Sounds like half of that is solely from your custom! Do people really spend hundreds a month on clothes??

Turnover means nothing. They could be turning over 10s of millions and still be going bankrupt.

ukathleticscoach · 09/04/2025 13:12

As its clothing you didn't even want 'returns' just contact them and let them know

Enthusiasticcarrotgrower · 09/04/2025 13:12

It’s their mistake so I would return it but make sure they paid for postage and ideally arranged collection.

SouthLondonMum22 · 09/04/2025 13:12

I'd be honest and hope they allowed me to keep them anyway. I'm not a thief.

DeathAndParsnips · 09/04/2025 13:12

I’d contact them of course because I’m not a thief and stealing is not acceptable and is wrong whether it’s from a large or small business.

Allaboardtheraveytrain · 09/04/2025 13:14

Hoppinggreen · 09/04/2025 13:05

Or not like a thief

I suppose you're right. Philip Green definitely wasn't a thief and you'd be definitely wrong for not being honest with him

HangryBrickShark · 09/04/2025 13:14

It's happened to me. If you ring them and say you are going to struggle to return them but will try they will let you have them.

GeorgeMichaelsCat · 09/04/2025 13:15

Contact them.

SmallFiresBurning · 09/04/2025 13:16

I’d contact them, and get a return arranged - although I might try them on if I was intending on reordering them when I had the funds, so I’d know if I definitely wanted them. I work in retail and I’m not a thief.

Doolallies · 09/04/2025 13:16

Im pleased to see most people would return. I was wondering if morals in the uk really had gone to shit. So depressing watching people shoplift from Greg’s and boots lately

Thindog · 09/04/2025 13:17

It is stealing if you keep them.
If it’s a genuine mistake the onus is on you to do the honest thing.
Do not be a thief.

MidnightGloria · 09/04/2025 13:17

I'd keep them. I'd put them aside for a month or so and return them if the company realised the mistake and asked for them back, but I wouldn't go out of my way to notify them.

Burngreave · 09/04/2025 13:17

I’d contact them and make arrangements to return them. Mistakes happen, I’m not about to turn into a thief for £120 of clothing.

Globules · 09/04/2025 13:17

It's happened to me several times and I've always let the company know. Sometimes I've been instructed to keep the items, other times to return.

Whenever I've been told to return them, I tell the company when I'm available for them to send a courier.

whathaveiforgotten · 09/04/2025 13:18

Do you get rid of stuff every time you buy new bits? Four new things every month soon adds up when it comes to wardrobe space, surely?
