What would you HONESTLY do in this situation?

Say you ordered a few items from a big online shop (clothing), then successfully cancelled the order, and was refunded.

A few days later, you ordered a single item of clothing from the same place. Today that item was delivered, however they had also sent the items you had cancelled and was refunded for (probably around £120 worth of stuff).

Would you contact them about it or would you keep quiet, see if they emailed you about it and if you didn’t hear anything say 3-4 weeks down the line, just keep the items as normal? This is a place you regularly order from, spending between £300-400 a month.

What would you HONESTLY do?

You’re still a thief whether the business is big or small.

You absolutely are not a thief when you receive unsolicited goods. Cancellation makes these unsolicited. Onus is on the company to recover them. This delivery is unlikely to have happened with a small business - margins are tight so they usually take a lot of care. A multinational with multi-millionaire shareholders will have calculated an error margin and not sweat this stuff. I would not go out of my way to initiate a return.

While I agree the company is responsible for recovering things they'erroneously sent you, just want to point out that a significant amount of large company shares are held by pension funds and other institutions who invest on behalf of regular people.

Eating into the profits of big companies doesn't only hurt mutli-millionaires.

Laura95167 · 10/04/2025 19:16

I'd probably keep them if I liked them

busymomtoone · 10/04/2025 19:28

Unless it was a company with dubious ethics ( T**u and its ilk) ( which I avoid anyway) then I would absolutely contact them because otherwise you will feel guilty because it’s akin to theft. I had a similar situation with a company that duplicated an order if a ( very nice!) child’s coat. On calling they said I could keep it which was fabulous as I was able to donate a brand new, really warm coat to a family in need, so it was a double bonus!!

ScruffGin · 10/04/2025 19:41

Keep quiet, see if they email me!

TwinklySquid · 10/04/2025 19:48

Contact them as I am a big believer in karma. I wouldn’t want to loose £120 of something .

toxic44 · 10/04/2025 20:14

I'd contact them and tell them what has happened. If they made the refund, the items belong to them.

Literallywingingit · 10/04/2025 20:15

I would contact them and let them know. I would feel guilty anytime I wore any of the clothes! 😆

Sorry, not sorry. Its really up to the bigger companies to run themselves with as much care and efficiency as I took with my small business and for investors to sort the wheat from the chaff.

Pippyls67 · 10/04/2025 21:00

Tell them - no question.

Carpedimum · 10/04/2025 21:30

A similar thing happened to my DS. He received a parcel from the large online fashion company containing 3 items none of which were what he ordered, so contacted them and because they had no record that matched, they did not want him send the goods back. His order was sent correctly the next day, super. We gave one of the unordered items to MIL, one to charity and the other we shared between us (big pack of socks!)

Emeraldwitch · 10/04/2025 21:46

I would contact them. Something similar happened to m recently - I ordered a ring from Etsy. It didn't arrive within a week so I contacted the company, and they said could I give it 2 more days and if not here, they would send a replacement.

Replacement sent on the Thursday, arrived on the Saturday, only for the original one to arrive on the following Monday (original order matched RM tracking). I contacted the company and asked to return it or at least pay for the 2nd ring. I returned it to them because I'm an honest person, and believe in karma - not everyone does but I do.

anon666 · 10/04/2025 21:48

A similar thing happened to me, nowhere near the same value. Also it was a gift, not for me, not my size, and too tiny to give to anyone else.

I essentially intended but forgot to return. I was super busy and am crap at returning things even at the best of times. At first I thought they'd ask for it back and that would have expedited it. But it never came, amd the guilt piled on.

That was 3 years ago. It's still on top of the wardrobe awaiting action.🙄

farmlife2 · 10/04/2025 21:59

I would let them know. I wouldn't feel comfortable otherwise.

Every time I've been sent groceries in my delivery that were supposed to be for someone else, I've let the supermarket know. They always say to keep them but I still have to let them know or I feel like I'm being dishonest.

Mackerelfillets · 10/04/2025 22:28

Something similar happened to me. Without warning I started receiving shoes and Doc Martins from people returning items from Ebay. I.contacted them and they told me to dispose of them as I wished. My daughter and many of her friends were delighted!! Eventually it stopped. For us it was a fab experience!!

Lulu49 · 10/04/2025 22:28

If you contact them they are likely to tell you just to keep them, their mistake.

Marchitectmummy · 11/04/2025 04:20

I would let them know too. I wouldn't feel comfortable not telling them. It would be on my mind.

Seabreeze18 · 11/04/2025 08:02

When u steal from a large company it’s not the big bosses on millions that lose out! It’s the hardworking minions at the bottom! It’s also all of us in the end as the prices go up!
be honest and hope u get to keep the items!

stretchitout · 09/04/2025 12:26

This did happen to me and I was honest. I was tempted not to be but in the end I had to be. And they let me have them free!

This happened to me with goods valued £480. Honesty brings rewards 😇

I would do this with an Etsy purchase or similar as they are all small businesses and it would impact on the individuals otherwise.

Cicicampbell · 11/04/2025 15:56

Amazon sent me a car seat. I ordered one and 2 were sent to me. The kids opened it in the excitement, but I contacted them and was told to keep it. For some businesses I suppose it isn't worth it.

I didn’t suggest you should be sorry about anything. Your small business and a multinational are just as responsible for ensuring they get it right. I just pointed out that your implication that mistakes multinational companies made hurt only multimillionaires was not true. Regular people are hurt by such mistakes just as they are with small businesses.

Frillysweetpea · 11/04/2025 17:08

Pricing will be determined by a range of factors, particularly cost of raw materials, competition etc. It's really obvious from the large number of replies where people have been told to keep the goods that there is a margin for this type of error, already calculated and passed onto the consumer. Presumably because recovery costs would exceed the overall value of collecting misdirected goods. The consumer may as well benefit from their once in a blue moon experience because I just do not believe that declaring such cases is going to affect the pricing structure.

Juicey1992 · 11/04/2025 17:32

I'd be honest and contact them but only because I have appalling luck and would find myself with a debt collection letter or something.

sassyclassyandsmartassy · 11/04/2025 18:05

Honestly, I would be honest, but I am a big believer in karma….
