Who is unreasonable re fuel?

Washinginthesun · 08/04/2025 11:54

Genuinely not sure.
I drive to uni every day. My friend usually lives on campus but is at home this week.
She’s asked me for a lift. She lives on the next street.
Obviously I said yes but asked if she’d split fuel costs for the journeys. She says I’m being unreasonable as I’d be going anyway. I’ve always contributed fuel money if someone gives me a lift somewhere.
We’re at a bit of a stalemate.

Nothing "equally" about it.

If the OP travelled alone, thats a cost the OP absorbs.

OPs friend however, gets a free ride for no cost. Is that equal?

Would you expect to travel free on a flight just because someone else paid £10k or more for a first class seat/ergo subsidise you?

No, you pay for your own seat - despite the fact the plane is going to the same place.

🙄

Friendship isn’t a business transaction 🙄

I think there are far too many people on this thread that think the world owes them something.

Pay your own way you stingy scroungers.

No-one owes you anything. Not lending you something they have paid for (you're not wearing it) staying at their house in a tourist destination (we so wanted to come and see you), not minding your kids (it's an emergency) or having lifts in their car (you're going there anyway)

Friends are not there to be exploited

The fact the OP asked for money suggests otherwise.

Yes, the drivers trying to charge friends for the odd lift. Entitled or what?
You are correct, friends are not there to be exploited, so don't charge them for the odd ride when you're going anyway.

In a friends private plane when they were going there anyway and there were empty seats....no I wouldn't expect to pay.
Would you?

user1471538275 · 11/04/2025 11:09

No. The person being pressured into giving something that they have not offered is not entitled. They owe nothing.

The person taking something is entitled. They need to stop scrounging and pay their way.

I assume you’re describing the driver in this scenario

user1471538275 · 11/04/2025 11:10

Good luck with getting a free seat on the private plane. 😂

user1471538275 · 11/04/2025 11:11

@lazycats How could I possibly be describing the driver?

A scrounger, thinking the world owes them something…

(Yes, it’s a joke, let’s not be tediously literal.)

Well, it’s not the kind of friendship I can relate to, thankfully. I genuinely can’t imagine thinking “Jane needs a lift for a few days, I won’t help her out unless she hands over some cash though”.

Yep, friends aren’t there to be exploited - so don’t demand money off for them for a journey you’re doing anyway 👍

Validation, as if it were needed, that you endorse CF'ery and self entitlement.

🤦‍♂️

BIossomtoes · 11/04/2025 13:00

Indeed. Some people. It would never occur to me to ask for money for a journey I was doing anyway.

We are not talking about what the friend should do. We are talking about what OP should do. I'm not sure how not charging friends for doing favours which cost nothing (OP is going there anyway) is endorsing CF.

FreddysFingers · 11/04/2025 13:58

I think if you're friends, a token gesture such as a Costa coffee or Mcdonalds coffee or something would suffice, but only if they insisted on paying me. I wouldn't ask for money.

Oh sweetie. I've been on private planes....the owner would never be crass enough to demand payment from friends, or accept it.

What kind of friend are you, demanding payments for favours? I cab just imagine your neighbour asking for a cup.of sugar....you weighing it out and charging, plus a deposit on the cup!

JFC. Some people. No idea how to behave at all.

Presumably you were asked to join them on their private plane. You didn't just approach them and ask whether they could give you a lift to NYC on their private plane for the weekend and then you would join them back at the airport to fly you home but you wouldn't be contributing financially, since they had already planned/paid to go to NYC on their private plane that weekend anyway. Can you really not see an issue with that?

Many times. You're probably unfamiliar with the different types of private planes and imagining something completely inaccurate, but thats because your only experience is from fiction 🤷‍♀️
