My husband says I can't have a pottery wheel even though my neighbour has offered to let me keep it in her studio

I don't ask for much but really fancy a second hand pottery wheel. My husband says it's a waste of money and that I won't use it much. I feel really sad as I have fancied one for years. My neighbour has even offered to put it in her shed/studio as we don't have room for it. AIBU?

How obtuse can you be?!

Quite.

You’ve made numerous statements in that post that are assumptions.

And you have made numerous ones that make no sense!

You think it's poor advice. No one else does!

The OP has provided a scenario. She has explained she is paying for the wheel herself. She has provided details of where the wheel can be based. She has given detail of her husband's £6,000 guitar collection.
That is honestly all we need to know.

I am not interested in whether her husband is a plumber and she signs some papers once a year! The fact her husband indulges his hobby to the tune of £6K and she is looking to spend £350 of her own money is enough for me to answer the thread.
BUY THE WHEEL!

I don't think anyone has enough information to tell her whether it's a good idea to buy the wheel.

I think everyone has enough information to say that if she wants to buy the wheel, nobody can or should stop her.

BustingBaoBun · 07/04/2025 15:20

Riaanna · 07/04/2025 15:17

Advising she buy the wheel is poor advice given the information provided. There are endless scenarios where that isn’t appropriate. And, again, based on the information we have so far any advice is premature.

The one thing you have achieved is probably to see off the OP, given your forensic questioning about her life.

I meant you! Jesus!!!

@Riaanna it's perfectly possible to make a LOT of money from good artwork - I spent £400 on one piece as a present for DH one Christmas with an up and coming artist. I've bought it also as an investment as well as because the topic was good and I knew DH would appreciate it. Luckily said artist has suddenly brought in a lot of attention and become well known locally and is beginning to be known in London circles, I'm told I could now almost add a 0 to what I paid if I sold as the artist's current pieces are for sale at above that price. Not all artists do it for nothing!

cordeliavorkosigan · 07/04/2025 15:21

He sounds controlling, op.
Get your wheel and also watch for signs of controlling behaviour in other areas. Big hypocrisy about the guitars, which is a bad sign..

Riaanna · 07/04/2025 15:13

Anyone who’s given advice based on the information given is wasting the OP’s time. Because there isn’t sufficient information provided to do anything other than provide poor advice.

You're wasting the OP's time and clogging up her thread.

You’re absolutely right. It is. Which is why I asked the OP if she contributed to the household / was financially independent.

Sometimes I despair...

If I’d had a wall close by I might have banged my head against it. I’ll continue with the thread but I can’t be arsed with a certain poster who thinks they're on Law and Order or some other such legal show.

You're quite right - if nobody gave this nonsense airtime, it would be best. It's a perfectly simple, straightforward question.

@Observermum1 if you are surviving the derail, which I hope you are, please buy the wheel. It sounds like you are really talented and given the amount of money your H has spent on his own hobby, he has a real cheek in forbidding you to spend a fraction of that amount on yours. Not only that, but he has a real cheek in "forbidding" you to do anything. I hope he's not always like that. If so, you have some thinking to do.

Buy it and enjoy it x

Why can't you understand a simple statement? All of them. Utter drivel.

Emptyandsad · 07/04/2025 15:27

I don't get it. What could be for fun for your husband than having a wife who is interested in something, is stimulated and therefore stimulating, who is happy and fulfilled? That is a joy for any partner

And while you throw a couple of pots, he can practise playing Stairway to Heaven on one of his many guitars in the bedroom

Megifer · 07/04/2025 15:27

Riaanna · 07/04/2025 15:25

Of course.

It's very clear you really....don't

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 07/04/2025 15:28

I'd definitely be buying it then!

Coconutter24 · 07/04/2025 15:28

Has he ever asked permission from you when he buys a new guitar?

WiddlinDiddlin · 07/04/2025 15:29

Buy the wheel - get someone else to help get it in, you can absolutely hire someone to help with that.

Just double check its still OK with your neighbour - I don't see how this has anything to do with your husband, its your money, its your time, its your neighbours studio and space. He is being controlling and frankly an arsehole.

How much income do his guitars bring via paid gigs or teaching?

Riaanna · 07/04/2025 15:30

adriftinadenofvipers · 07/04/2025 15:26

Why can't you understand a simple statement? All of them. Utter drivel.

Because it doesn’t fit your narrative? Because I asked for further context?

I get it. You’re the type that cannot see past the end of their nose. That doesn’t question whether someone is seeking to have behaviour enabled or looking for genuine advice about a potentially controlling spouse.

The point is that there isn’t sufficient information on this post to offer any useful advice. You’re happy to give advice anyway. I am not. Because I understand that giving advice with information missing means you can give awful advice and in the extreme cause harm.

That’s basically the end of it. You do you. I will do me.

Megifer · 07/04/2025 15:27

Based on what? That I’ve made no assumptions and sort to get facts before giving advice…?

Gonners · 07/04/2025 15:32

I think we need to remember that the school Easter holidays have started. OP, buy it if you want to and make your first piece something useful, like a funeral urn in the shape of a dick.
