and can't be swept aside as "just a joke".

Interview with him in the Times Style magazine today. He tells the interviewer (Vassi Chamberlain) that he writes a diary every night as if he is writing to his wife. She asks him what the entry about today and their interview would say and this is the end of the article. For context earlier in the article she says that after she asked him a question when he'd finished answering he'd "fire the same" quesiton back at her which is probably how he had the additional information.

Here is the quote:

"What will tonight’s account say, I ask. He bursts out laughing.

He sits up and clears his throat as if he’s about to perform at the Old Vic.

“Astonishingly,” he begins, “the journalist was 4ft 11in.” I stop him right there. I’m 5ft 1in. “She’s 5ft 1in. Her face looks like a roadmap because she had head and neck cancer 14 years ago, which she luckily survived, but because of it she’s not allowed to have plastic surgery. All her girlfriends now look 40 years old but her jawline is hanging around her knees and in ten years she will tie a bow with her dyed hair around her chin in a tight knot and she’ll look like the Queen at Balmoral.”

Ouch."

I read that and thought "what a bitch of a man". I've never really liked him - his Instagram videos where he's constantly smiling with a fake smile that never reaches his eyes always seem ultra insincere as he pontificates about how wonderful the day or the tree or the park is. This really exposes the heart of a person.

I guess everyone him included will try to justify it as a joke but it's very nasty - making the point that her short height is 'astonishing' like some circus freak, her face looking like a road map. I think her finishing 'ouch' was really very understated and kind.

Wow, that’s…..odd. I actually find him very sleazy on the Hotels show he did, and he jumps on the bed with his shoes, which revolts me.

IdLikeThingToSpiralIntoControl · 06/04/2025 16:18

Awful.
I had no clue who she is so googled, she is a beautiful woman, he is a rude, pompous arse.

Pyjamatimenow · 06/04/2025 16:18

Gross and not funny.

AlistairSim · 06/04/2025 16:19

I’m not sure that could ever be passed off as a joke. It’s extremely cruel.
What a git.

purpleme12 · 06/04/2025 16:19

Is this true?

It's just so obviously nasty, to put it mildly really, that I think to myself why would anyone go there. Not to mention someone in the public eye

Barbadossunset · 06/04/2025 16:21

That was vile. I wonder if he’d been drinking when he did the interview.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 06/04/2025 16:22

Well, he famously doesn't drink, because Bruce Robinson insisted on making him drink before he had to act drunk in Withnail and I. It made him very ill. He's allergic to it. So I don't think it can be that.

Very disappointed in him, if this is true.

WombatCowgirl · 06/04/2025 16:23

I read this earlier and was shocked, the only mitigation is maybe she had said some of those things of herself earlier in a self deprecating way? Still really mean though.

StripesZigZags · 06/04/2025 16:23

@purpleme12 I'm not sure what you mean by is this true?
Do you mean it is true this was quoted in the article - yes it's here:

https://www.thetimes.com/life-style/celebrity/article/richard-e-grant-interview-death-of-a-unicorn-pd8b93m7p

do you mean is it true in the sense did the journalist make it up? Hardly - it would be more than her career and reputation is worth.

Richard E Grant: ‘Love again? I’m not looking for it’

The actor has starred in over 70 films — and been a scene-stealer in them all. So when he’s not working, what does he do for fun?

Wow. That’s awful.

Namechangetry · 06/04/2025 16:24

Wow. Making nasty comments about someone's appearance while they're doing their non-appearance related job, is sleazy. Making nasty comments about someone appearance which has been impacted by their treatment for cancer, is lower than low. What a scumbag.

Pullmeunder · 06/04/2025 16:25

Total cunt but not surprised, my face “looks like a roadmap” because of cancer too, far more than hers, she looks gorgeous, and you would not believe the amount of cunty comments I’ve had from people who think it’s a bit of fun, to say a stranger looks like quasi modo etc

Pancakeflipper · 06/04/2025 16:26

Is he mentally OK at the moment? I'm sure I heard he'd been licking walls in a radio studio the other day.

I think what he said was unpleasant in that interview. He's made out to be a national treasure but I wonder if he's a bit of meanie.

2024onwardsandup · 06/04/2025 16:26

Oh how disappointing

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 06/04/2025 16:27

I've always been a bit 😕 on him after his wife died and he paid a beautiful tribute to her but only included himself and their daughter with absolutely no mention of his stepson (whose mother she also was).

StripesZigZags · 06/04/2025 16:28

Barbadossunset · 06/04/2025 16:21

@Barbadossunset - it says in terms in the interview that he doesn't drink:

"Grant found out as a teen that he was allergic to alcohol. What’s it like going out sober? “What you don’t know you don’t miss. I never get a hangover.” So what does he do for fun, does he like music? “I love everything except for hip-hop, the ‘I’m going to f* you up the ass’ kind of misogynistic crap.”"

. . .

"So he doesn’t drink, and he has already told me he doesn’t do drugs; he must have an addiction to something. “Yes, I like dead people’s things, the sort you find in junk shops. Especially oversized things.”"

Ah ok.

WelcomeToBoycottCity · 06/04/2025 16:30

Really nasty comment. I looked up Vassi on google and she looks lovely. Not that it matters. No woman’s looks should be ridiculed, especially on msm. Bet he thought he was being hilarious. Grim.

I saw him on The One Show the other night (don't judge me, it's compulsively terrible) and though he looked as though he was high although I'm sure that was just his sparkling personality. Please don't use me Mr Grant.

rubyslippers · 06/04/2025 16:31

The whole article was off and the ending made me feel he was being mean unnecessarily

Bigcat25 · 06/04/2025 16:32

Yes this is despicable. I had no idea he was like this.

Pullmeunder · 06/04/2025 16:32

(Can’t read the whole article because of the paywall) but based on the parts op copied and pasted. I love the the contrast of I don’t like misogynistic rap, then the horrible comment on the woman’s look, the irony is probably lost on him.

@AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta that's interesting...

Yesterdaywassunny · 06/04/2025 16:34

I can't read the article because of the paywall, but the journalist did decide to include that description in the article - to make him look bad? To centre herself?

It does sound awful, but she did tell him a lot about herself - maybe she said that her face looked like a roadmap, maybe she said it was her plan to tie her hair into a knot under her chin, maybe he was quoting her own words, and she included them in the article as she's proud of being self-deprecating.

Giggorata · 06/04/2025 16:36

Very disappointed and disgusted by some man, up himself because he is well known, letting fly like that at a perfectly harmless woman, no doubt seeing an easy target to deride.
Nasty.

If he was repeating her own words, it should have been made clear. But if he was, it would have been kinder and more chivalrous not to.
