and can't be swept aside as "just a joke".

Interview with him in the Times Style magazine today. He tells the interviewer (Vassi Chamberlain) that he writes a diary every night as if he is writing to his wife. She asks him what the entry about today and their interview would say and this is the end of the article. For context earlier in the article she says that after she asked him a question when he'd finished answering he'd "fire the same" quesiton back at her which is probably how he had the additional information.

Here is the quote:

"What will tonight’s account say, I ask. He bursts out laughing.

He sits up and clears his throat as if he’s about to perform at the Old Vic.

“Astonishingly,” he begins, “the journalist was 4ft 11in.” I stop him right there. I’m 5ft 1in. “She’s 5ft 1in. Her face looks like a roadmap because she had head and neck cancer 14 years ago, which she luckily survived, but because of it she’s not allowed to have plastic surgery. All her girlfriends now look 40 years old but her jawline is hanging around her knees and in ten years she will tie a bow with her dyed hair around her chin in a tight knot and she’ll look like the Queen at Balmoral.”

Ouch."

I read that and thought "what a bitch of a man". I've never really liked him - his Instagram videos where he's constantly smiling with a fake smile that never reaches his eyes always seem ultra insincere as he pontificates about how wonderful the day or the tree or the park is. This really exposes the heart of a person.

I guess everyone him included will try to justify it as a joke but it's very nasty - making the point that her short height is 'astonishing' like some circus freak, her face looking like a road map. I think her finishing 'ouch' was really very understated and kind.

he got popular on TikTok a while back because he was talking about the grieving journey but it was hard to feel sorry for him - he just came across as opportunistic after a while

2024onwardsandup · 06/04/2025 17:21

I’ve done done s rabbit hole!

indjdnt know he has a step son either - turns out that he met his wife when he went for a lesson at her house…where she lived with her husband and son and was still married. They slept together that night. Cant see any references from him re his step son.

Make of that what you will

Mintie190 · 06/04/2025 17:21

What a horrible creep of a man. And I’m so tired of plastic surgery being spoken about as if it’s the norm for women over 40.

This is the article, non-paywalled version. https://archive.ph/d8bY9

Thanks. I'm more convinced that the diary entry talk were references to conversations with the journalist now. In the article, they talk about aging and looks quite a bit so I can imagine she also revealed her thoughts about herself. And then, as that actually happened that day, it's a valid diary entry to make. That's my theory anyway.

I read this earlier and was shocked, the only mitigation is maybe she had said some of those things of herself earlier in a self deprecating way? Still really mean though.

Or he was emulating her usual style of writing about others including himself - she may have been surprised how tall or short someone was in real life and phrased it similarly

I had to look up his tribute before I posted because I wasn't 100% sure I hadn't imagined it, but no. What he actually says is beloved wife to me and giver of life to Olivia (his dd) how hard would it have been to have put And X, it's literally 2 words!

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 06/04/2025 16:27

I've always been a bit 😕 on him after his wife died and he paid a beautiful tribute to her but only included himself and their daughter with absolutely no mention of his stepson (whose mother she also was).

He never once mentions the stepson in his memoirs either. You'd never know he existed. Always found that creepy.

Sometimes people don’t want to be included in memoirs for privacy reasons though, so that’s a possibility.

His stepson is mentioned in the book’s acknowledgments I believe.

He says
‘Joan - Love of my Life & Giver of Life to our daughter Olivia’
so the emphasis is slightly different I think.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 06/04/2025 17:46

What the fuck?! That's so fucking rude I can't believe it!

Stresshead84x · 06/04/2025 17:46

Yesterdaywassunny · 06/04/2025 16:34

I can't read the article because of the paywall, but the journalist did decide to include that description in the article - to make him look bad? To centre herself?

It does sound awful, but she did tell him a lot about herself - maybe she said that her face looked like a roadmap, maybe she said it was her plan to tie her hair into a knot under her chin, maybe he was quoting her own words, and she included them in the article as she's proud of being self-deprecating.

That's how I read it- not great but that she was being self-depreciating and he just quoted her back.

Fairyliz · 06/04/2025 17:50

He’s just one of these pretentious left wing lovies or pretends to care about the world but is actually a nasty man underneath.

InterestQ · 06/04/2025 17:50

In the context of the whole article and their discussion it’s not that bad. On its own it is.

He’s asked a lot of very personal questions and answers them quite openly. He sounds fed up with her.

BobbyBiscuits · 06/04/2025 18:04

That is awful. Would he have said that about a male journalist?!
He clearly thinks he's absolutely hilarious. I honestly think he comes off like a homosexual incel...

Cynic17 · 06/04/2025 18:10

Oh come on , it's a joke, ffs, and the journalist is clearly in on it.
Richard E Grant isn't perfect (obviously), but he's an interesting and intelligent man who isn't bland and who doesn't necessarily conform just for the sake of it. The world needs more people like him.

Perhaps but I still think there's room to have included his SS. Joan - Love of my Life & Giver of Life to our daughter Olivia and her son X still works.

StopStartStop · 06/04/2025 18:12

What a horrible man. I don't believe in 'cancelling'... usually... but...

NinjaFurtive · 06/04/2025 18:15

He phoned my work once as he was on a project with my boss and introduced himself as 'This is Richard.E.Grant. I need to speak to X.'

Using the 'E' did make me smile. I think she'd have known had he just said Richard Grant :)

He was terribly pompous.

SunDey · 06/04/2025 18:16

Maybe they know each other socially/ run in the same circles so he thinks it's ok to make jokes about her and other women of her age/income? ( I.e. mutual acquaintances who have had cosmetic surgery).

But I have always found him on the wrong side of bitchy. No sense of warmth.

Bigcat25 · 06/04/2025 16:32

Yes this is despicable. I had no idea he was like this.

Or me, he certainly acts perfect etiquette. I am shocked, he is unforgivable.

EasyTouch · 06/04/2025 18:21

I still remember him telling an interviewer over the phone that him and his wife just had a tiff, saying that she's on her period.
This was decades ago and that snippet told me that he's a misogynistic tosser.
He strikes me as closeted, too.

PrettayGood · 06/04/2025 18:28

I was more alarmed that he went on holiday with the ghastly Charlotte Tilbury.

What an odd chap. Being self-deprecating does not give you a license to be insulting.

CassiasC · 06/04/2025 18:30

Given the interviewer looks pretty good, I wonder if this is some kind of advanced negging?

Utterly bizarre, unfunny and awful, anyway.

I'm glad I clicked on this thread, however - the Limmy clip has made my day.

It does work.
They also had another daughter who died shortly after birth.
