to think this is not nice of Richard E Grant

and can't be swept aside as "just a joke".

Interview with him in the Times Style magazine today. He tells the interviewer (Vassi Chamberlain) that he writes a diary every night as if he is writing to his wife. She asks him what the entry about today and their interview would say and this is the end of the article. For context earlier in the article she says that after she asked him a question when he'd finished answering he'd "fire the same" quesiton back at her which is probably how he had the additional information.

Here is the quote:

"What will tonight’s account say, I ask. He bursts out laughing.

He sits up and clears his throat as if he’s about to perform at the Old Vic.

“Astonishingly,” he begins, “the journalist was 4ft 11in.” I stop him right there. I’m 5ft 1in. “She’s 5ft 1in. Her face looks like a roadmap because she had head and neck cancer 14 years ago, which she luckily survived, but because of it she’s not allowed to have plastic surgery. All her girlfriends now look 40 years old but her jawline is hanging around her knees and in ten years she will tie a bow with her dyed hair around her chin in a tight knot and she’ll look like the Queen at Balmoral.”

Ouch."

I read that and thought "what a bitch of a man". I've never really liked him - his Instagram videos where he's constantly smiling with a fake smile that never reaches his eyes always seem ultra insincere as he pontificates about how wonderful the day or the tree or the park is. This really exposes the heart of a person.

I guess everyone him included will try to justify it as a joke but it's very nasty - making the point that her short height is 'astonishing' like some circus freak, her face looking like a road map. I think her finishing 'ouch' was really very understated and kind.

He phoned my work once as he was on a project with my boss and introduced himself as 'This is Richard.E.Grant. I need to speak to X.'

Using the 'E' did make me smile. I think she'd have known had he just said Richard Grant :)

He was terribly pompous.

I've started listening to comedians reading their autobiographies as a way to wind down and go to sleep, the other night I was listening to Jack Whitehall and his dad Michael read theirs.

MW used to be REG's agent when his career began but was sacked because Richard wasn't getting the big Hollywood roles he felt he should be. Forever afterwards he's been known in the Whitehall house as Richard E Can't.

LindorDoubleChoc · 06/04/2025 18:50

As recounted here on Mumsnet, this makes me worried there's something seriously off with him! What's going on?

It's so extreme.

It's a bit like Jeremy Paxman and his column about Meghan Markle. But with Paxman you can be sure he was drunk before he filed that copy.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 06/04/2025 18:53

@LindorDoubleChoc Do you mean Jeremy Clarkson? I may have missed it but I don't remember anything about Jeremy Paxman writing a column.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 06/04/2025 18:54

What? Is/was Jeremy a known drunk? I know he has Parkinson's now, sadly.

Pinepeak2434 · 06/04/2025 18:54

I’ve never been a fan of what I’ve seen of him. Recently, Davina McCall did a podcast/interview with him, and he kept responding to her questions by asking her the same ones. Several times, she had to ask him to stop doing it.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 06/04/2025 18:54

Clarkson! That makes a lot more sense.

SoMauveMonty · 06/04/2025 18:56

That's all a bit grim.
He lives not far from me, i don't know him but know people who do and i've never heard a bad word said about him. Maybe i've not been paying proper attention 😂 Or maybe he was just having a bad day, and the interview just went pear shaped.

VickyEadieofThigh · 06/04/2025 19:00

I've always found him creepy, so to learn he's an arsehole isn't a surprise.

Lentilweaver · 06/04/2025 19:02

That whole interview reads so weirdly.

Mummyoflittledragon · 06/04/2025 19:08

Cynic17 · 06/04/2025 18:10

Oh come on , it's a joke, ffs, and the journalist is clearly in on it.
Richard E Grant isn't perfect (obviously), but he's an interesting and intelligent man who isn't bland and who doesn't necessarily conform just for the sake of it. The world needs more people like him.

I don’t find what he said funny. I wonder if she really was in on the joke. And would this have flown had it been a woman speaking about a man?

WhenYouSayNothingAtAll · 06/04/2025 19:09

So rather than believe a man (even a famous one) is an arsehole so far we’ve had:

he had a bad day
he was drunk
he was on drugs
he is mentally ill
it’s a joke
she said it
she set him up
she deserved it.

Or maybe, just maybe… the man can be an arsehole?

SuperFi · 06/04/2025 19:13

So bloody out of order. I saw him on the hotel show he did; urgh, he was so fake and cringe I had to turn it off. Love Withnail and I; I just hope Paul McGann doesn’t disappoint me too. ( He is fab on the Real Dictators podcast).

Allnamechange · 06/04/2025 19:16

It reads oddly. I don’t know what to make of it. Also odd to ask journalists the questions back.

Weefox · 06/04/2025 19:23

Read it too and very disappointed. The man is full of his own self importance and not a very pleasant character. Not a great actor either.

Saucery · 06/04/2025 19:25

He’s long since been what you get when you order Rupert Everett from Wish and his late wife had her moments of being an absolute bitch and bully, so despite my love for Withnail And I, I’m not surprised to read this.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 06/04/2025 19:29

@WhenYouSayNothingAtAll that's the bingo card for any thread featuring a famous male behaving in any untoward way.

tarheelbaby · 06/04/2025 19:40

Despite being fairly up on sleb knowledge, I don't have a lot of useless trivia about REG. He's known for not being a great actor but writes films well - supposedly Hugh Grant plays him well. REG was a bitchy servant in Gosford Park.
As per newspapers, he was devasted to lose his wife. Having recently lost my DH, I'm not really looking for anyone so I can understand if he's not either.

My general impression has been/is that he is not very nice in person. He's written lots of trenchant dialogue for a range of films so I imagine he's pretty spiky IRL.

BoredZelda · 06/04/2025 19:43

Elsvieta · 06/04/2025 17:38

He never once mentions the stepson in his memoirs either. You'd never know he existed. Always found that creepy.

Maybe the stepson didn’t let him.

Wishingplenty · 06/04/2025 19:44

Mmm I have met him. He is not that tall either, however short men are known to mock petite women. He was polite to me though and smiled.

Depressing , isn’t it? And this is just the possibility of him being a dick. Imagine if it was something worse .

That’s what the Times interviewer says he was doing to her too.

I read the interview this morning and was shocked by that ending - even in the context of her possibly talking about her own appearance his comment was incredibly rude.

whatkatydid2014 · 06/04/2025 19:46

He seems deeply unpleasant. Reading a past article talking about the aftermath of her treatment seems like the general style of criticising her own appearance isn’t out of keeping with other writing but I don’t see why that makes it fine he said it?

How stupid do you have to be to not realise that the interviewer asks the questions? He's not stupid.
It's a power play.
I am fed up of celebs behaving like they are too posh or intelligent for interviews. Suck it up, buttercup!

cowboyhats · 06/04/2025 19:49

I have always found him slimy, creepy and off putting so this doesnt entirely shock me.

I am afraid there are a lot of very unpleasant people in tv and film in general - its the huge egos.
