and can't be swept aside as "just a joke".

Interview with him in the Times Style magazine today. He tells the interviewer (Vassi Chamberlain) that he writes a diary every night as if he is writing to his wife. She asks him what the entry about today and their interview would say and this is the end of the article. For context earlier in the article she says that after she asked him a question when he'd finished answering he'd "fire the same" quesiton back at her which is probably how he had the additional information.

Here is the quote:

"What will tonight’s account say, I ask. He bursts out laughing.

He sits up and clears his throat as if he’s about to perform at the Old Vic.

“Astonishingly,” he begins, “the journalist was 4ft 11in.” I stop him right there. I’m 5ft 1in. “She’s 5ft 1in. Her face looks like a roadmap because she had head and neck cancer 14 years ago, which she luckily survived, but because of it she’s not allowed to have plastic surgery. All her girlfriends now look 40 years old but her jawline is hanging around her knees and in ten years she will tie a bow with her dyed hair around her chin in a tight knot and she’ll look like the Queen at Balmoral.”

Ouch."

I read that and thought "what a bitch of a man". I've never really liked him - his Instagram videos where he's constantly smiling with a fake smile that never reaches his eyes always seem ultra insincere as he pontificates about how wonderful the day or the tree or the park is. This really exposes the heart of a person.

I guess everyone him included will try to justify it as a joke but it's very nasty - making the point that her short height is 'astonishing' like some circus freak, her face looking like a road map. I think her finishing 'ouch' was really very understated and kind.

I follow him on Insta and had no idea he had a stepson. It's like he's written him out his wife's life!

What a wanker 😡
I wouldn’t wipe my backside on him if he was bog roll.

Bogginsthe3rd · 06/04/2025 21:30

Apparently he was really weird/prickly on the Richard Herring podcast (RHLSTP, RHLSTP) and forbade Richard from releasing it despite being offered option to edit out any part he didn't like. It remains unreleased.

Indeed. Imagine the responses on here if someone posted "My DW has sadly passed away. I put a tribute on Instagram and just included our shared DD, not my SS. AIBU?".

@WizardOfAus That photo is scaring me but I can't take my eyes off it 🙈

I know several people who have dealt with REG over the years and have never had anything but praise for him, and they have all said how utterly lovely he his.

In the article he describes some of the uncomplimentary reviews he has had about his looks over the years, so it's not all one way for a start.

I know nothing about this woman's work, but we only have her word about this, and I wouldn't take it as gospel.

This is not the National Enquirer claiming the Queen is a lizard and hiding bigfoot. You realise that, right?

If she had made this up, not only would she lose her job and reputation but she could be sued for it!

FFS..

His beloved wife was short, about 5’, and more than 10 years older than him, and dyed her hair 🤔

So not sure if he was just being completely and utterly horrible, or if there’s something I’m missing here? It’s very odd behaviour.

Yes: his wife was not the standard tweaked and 'toxed film star's wife. She was older than him and looked her age. So he is definitely not a man whose only interest is the way women look.

I wonder whether Vassi Chamberlain talked to him about her health experiences and commented self-deprecatingly on the damage done to her face and hair and he jokingly and ironically put that back to her, never thinking that she'd include it? If so, I think that's the last interview she'll ever do with a celebrity. No one with any sense would trust her.

LittleMonks11 · 06/04/2025 21:35

I followed him on Insta. Then unfollowed him after a while as his posts just started to feel off for some reason. A bit weird and fake.

Sometimes there's such a gap between the parts an actor plays and their real personality. I used to think he was cool. He's clearly not cool.
I was vaguely disappointed with him when he turned out to be a bit grovelling and try hard when he was promoting a film called "Can you ever forgive me?" When he was nominated for an Oscar he was came across as really fake and "little me here at the oscars?"
Of course he behaved really oddly when he was in the Star Warts film and and Limmy had a lot of fun making fun of it.

Kill jester.

Yes, this is a good point. His daughter equally does not look like the usual Hollywood offspring, in a positive way. His wife seemed lovely, but definitely looked her age and like a very normal woman. How was REG even have known any of this health information about the journalist? Perhaps it was a shared joke gone wrong re the photo he took in the headscarf. The comment about cancer does just seem really bizarre though.

Pullmeunder · 06/04/2025 21:39

yes totally untrustworthy for including his reply to an interview question. Also even if he never thought she’d put that in (why it’s an interview), that’s not any better, just insulting a woman and then hoping she doesn’t put it in.

hazelnutvanillalatte · 06/04/2025 21:40

BobbyBiscuits · 06/04/2025 18:04

That is awful. Would he have said that about a male journalist?!
He clearly thinks he's absolutely hilarious. I honestly think he comes off like a homosexual incel...

I agree, it really has the specific tone of a gay man who hates women

So she made him insult her then 🤦

PyrannosaurusRex · 06/04/2025 21:52

this isn’t his first interview. He knows she’ll have notes; he also knows the subs will pull out anything outrageous as the lead quotes, so there’s no way he’d say that, ‘thinking she’d never include it’. So either she said that herself, and he’s passing off her self-deprecating line as his own witticisms, or he’s being cruel. Either way, ugh.

Blondiney · 06/04/2025 21:52

(Can’t read the whole article because of the paywall) but based on the parts op copied and pasted. I love the the contrast of I don’t like misogynistic rap, then the horrible comment on the woman’s look, the irony is probably lost on him.

My spidey senses usually tingle when a man makes a big public deal of how supportive he is of women, especially if they self declare themselves as feminists (not that I’m saying he did that(.

But ‘I hate rap coz it’s it’s ALL misogynistic!’ is such a low hanging fruit tick’ if you want to look good. Meanwhile he’s probably listening to ‘Under My Thumb’ by Rolling Stones.

TheReturnOfFeathersMcGraw · 06/04/2025 22:02

I got fed up of him when his instagram was full of videos he took of himself crying - it all seemed very ott and 'look at me'.
Also never knew he had a step son - Im really shocked by that

Theseventhmagpie · 06/04/2025 22:03

He’s been vile for years. Wasn’t he on some program years ago advocating to save a particular historic property in the uk then when it won he couldn’t be bothered to even turn up for the final episode of the series? I think it was called Restoration?

Ricepudpud · 06/04/2025 22:04

I've always thought that there was something creepy about him.

LittleMonks11 · 06/04/2025 22:09

I also never knew he had a stepson. I do know a lot about his daughter Olivia though.

NeilDiamondsBlowDry · 06/04/2025 22:11

He is just a washed up douche bag

blueirises · 06/04/2025 22:25

I seem to remember he had a falling-out with Lynn Barber when she interviewed him for the Observer in the 90s. He didn't like the tone of the questions or something. She seemed pretty mystified about why, and tbh it didn't seem to be anything out of the ordinary - not "respectful" enough or something.

AND he stood behind me once in Waitrose in Richmond huffing and puffing because I hadn't put the divider down on the conveyor belt. He only bought pineapples and bananas. Loads of them. Strange fellow.
