Keir Starmer ignoring Mother's Day

AIBU to think it's a bit of a glaring omission?

Nothing on Twix today except something about Ramadan, and an RT about Myanmar.

Lots of upset on there about him ignoring Lent too.

It's probably too late to expect anything now.

What's his objective here? It feels so... deliberate. And bizarre.

Fully expecting some to accuse me of dog whistling. But I'd still be interested in why they think he's done it.

Last year Mothers Day coincided with the beginning of Ramadan. Here's the PM's tweet. No mention of Mothers Day. No twatter storm.

The twitter racists didn't seem to irrationally hate Sunack as much did they? Although now some of them have decided he's "not English".

Calm down. We are increasingly seeing this type of aggressive post, usually by people who are control freaks and want to control what other people say and think because it doesn't align with their own opinions. You can froth at the mouth all you want, but if people have an opinion, they're going to voice it. Get over it.

The irony.😂😂😂

I've literally said upthread he either does sm or he doesn't. So, mention key events on all his platforms or don't do sm.

As pm he should have a bit of common sense and social media awareness. It isn't hard <to quote a pp>.

When did it last upset you that a PM mentioned some events but not others? For eg Sunak didn’t mention Mothers’ Day but did do Eid (it’s been shown upthread). Did that make you say he shouldn’t do SM at all? Or that it’s ‘incompetence’ as others have suggested?

CaptainMyCaptain · 31/03/2025 16:56

cardibach · 31/03/2025 16:35

What would he say about Lent? It’s a time of reflection and self denial, not something to celebrate all over the place. He’ll post about Easter as he has in the past.

Exactly. Nobody goes round saying Happy Lent.

I don't think anyone says happy ramadon do they? Isn't it like Lent where you say peace and blessings or similar?

Usually only at the beginning and the end I think. I don't have a problem with it anyway.

ToWhitToWhoo · 31/03/2025 17:04

ERthree · 31/03/2025 11:31

Why did he mention Ramadan ?

It's Eid he mentioned, which is the celebration at the end of Ramadan. The nearest equivalent in the Christian calendar would be Easter, I suppose. (Not that close, as few people do such intense fasts for Lent. In any case, Ramadan is not always close to Lent in time; it just happens to be this year.) He did not say 'Happy Ramadan; on every day of it!

That's a really terrible social media strategy.

Yes, complained and observed. There hasn't been any outrage and 'upset'.

Doesn't a lot of gnashing count as outrage?

SallyWD · 31/03/2025 17:37

TooBigForMyBoots · 31/03/2025 17:19

And the posters who've said it's disgraceful.

Janiie · 31/03/2025 17:39

No gnashing here just calm observation, comment and criticism.

Not sure why we are all programmed to label other women's opinions as froth, outrage and hysteria. It's like we've been brainwashed to be misogynistic even though we are women Confused.

Do men get accused of being outraged when they roll their eyes at other's behaviour? No.

TooBigForMyBoots · 31/03/2025 17:41

The gnashing came from the OP, who saw a lot of it.

BIossomtoes · 31/03/2025 17:42

Who is making these important decisions about which Days are Really Very Important and which are Utter Bullshit?

The No 10 comms team I imagine.

Well OP kicked the thread off by talking about "lots of upset" so I don't think you can solely blame this on the policing of women's opinions rather than the framing of the thread..

Janiie · 31/03/2025 17:49

'Well OP kicked the thread off by talking about "lots of upset"

Lots of upset on Twitter she said. There has just been calm and polite criticism on here yet we've been accused of being outraged, offended and 'gnashing'.

People have said it’s disgraceful, incompetent and racist. I think those overreactions count as outrage, offence and ‘gnashing’.

TooBigForMyBoots · 31/03/2025 18:01

DangerQuakeRhinoSnake · 31/03/2025 00:01

Yeh he did not post it to all platforms though. He could have done a text only one for X and it would have saved a lot of gnashing 😄

It was the OP who talked about a lot of gnashing.🙈

Saying something is incompetent and disgraceful is criticism. It is not being outraged nor gnashing. Now if someone said its absolutely shocking! disgusting and appalling that would be a bit of gnashing.

Women are allowed to voice their opnions, we aren't hysterical.

I’m a woman too, and my opinion is that using such strong words for criticism suggests outrage. Criticism might be it was ‘poor’ or ‘disappointing’. Not that it was. As a woman my opinion is this is a load of nonsense confected by people who dislike Starmer.

Ilovecleaning · 31/03/2025 18:09

It would never occur to me to expect the PM, male or female, to comment on Mothers Day, Diwali, Ead, Fathers Day or any other soppy, virtue signalling tripe. I want the PM to focus on doing his/her job.

It was the original poster who started with mentioning gnashing:

So, someone is apparently gnashing.

Same way you do ramadan 'Sending my warmest wishes to Muslim communities across the UK and around the world during the holy month of Ramadan' KS on X in Feb.

Has anyone ever said something like that about Lent? Ever?

Happy Easter, of course. Warmest wishes for Lent? Seriously?

I expect Jacob Rees-Mog does!

Myengagementring · 31/03/2025 18:22

Surely it's clever how it was done, mention EID on one platform and Mothers day on another. Otherwise it's multiple posts on the same platform and which do you do first, someone would be upset if he mentioned EID first. Some would be upset if it was Mothers day first then EID was posted about and it pushed the Mothers day post off feeds. He cannot win!

My thoughts exactly.
