Is the floral dress and white trainers look out?

garricces · 30/03/2025 20:21

So it’s been really nice as we all know. My go to for work is the floral dress and white trainers and I was told by my younger colleague this look is “out”

I know it doesn’t matter as long as you like what you wear, but I’m also conscious of not looking stylish but keeping my look “fresh”

I've never worn white trainers, always my coloured suade ones. I love my Adidas campus or gazelles with dresses. I even got my teens dds to follow my trend.

The birkenstock style sandal appears to be the new trend and wedges are def back from what I've seen in the shops.

I'm interested as to why it's the poor old Vejas that have been so soundly thrashed out of the fashion ring? I've got two pairs, one black that I've had for years and wear to gym classes and a white/cream pair that I only bought last year. I will obviously still wear them but not with my trendier friends!

I think it's just the age old thing that fashion often originates from the young and cool- a lot I guess from hipsters in Shoreditch, Royal Academy/St Martin's kids, those in creative industries... it then trickles down to suburbia (takes circa 5 years) and as soon as the young, the cool, see the middle class mums wearing stuff - they stop. Immediately. It then becomes uncool. The yummy mummies also stop. And on it goes.

It's obviously more about style, wearing clothes that suit your body rather than fashion. It's precisely style that forms trends hence those in creative industries lead the way.

Totally agree, just wondered why so harsh on Vejas, seems they get singled out a lot on here?

Based what I saw in London last weekend, the floral maxi dress has been replaced by beige leopard print wide leg jeans - nearly every other woman I saw was wearing them.

I think they’re from M&S.

Ah, I stand corrected! I did think it weird that so many people said they didn’t care about what was in style…

Although it is slightly odd to come on a thread that doesn’t interest you just to say that 😂

OP clearly follows fashion otherwise she wouldn’t have asked.

HelenWheels · 02/04/2025 05:18

i will carry on regardless

I think these are nice but I’ve not seen anyone wearing them in real life who actually looks good.

I wonder if they’re possibly a bit unflattering.

beachcitygirl · 02/04/2025 05:48

I also like this look, but I remember long ago when I wore crop tops and combat trousers (a la - all saints) and then my mum bought combat trousers in M&S and that was the death knell for me.
young people don’t want to look like middle age women.
it’s out, but if you’re happy and comfortable being middle age and out of fashion. Touch - then fuck them all and do you x

I wouldn't dream of throwing away a pair of trainers that weren't broken or split at the seams. Do people really do that?

They sell them on Vinted and then I buy them 😁

"If you're happy being middle aged"... not a lot of choice about that, is there? If middle aged people wearing something makes it out of fashion, then no matter what they wear it's never going to be fashionable!

Vejas are out too 😹

I love my Vejas.
So bloody comfortable.

I am wearing navy dungarees today, with a pink top, cream fluffy cardigan and cream pumas. Comfy as anything and I have zero fucks to give ( and I’m nearly 50 but am told I still look 30 as I’m very petite and not tall at all)

Who cares I say. Wear what you like .

If you’re happy being middle aged?

Oh do fuck off with your sneering ageism. I’m quite happy being middle aged. The only alternative is being dead.

QuirkInTheMatrix · 02/04/2025 07:21

Funny isn’t it…I’m definitely middle aged. On one hand we’re sneered at for being “frumpy” if we wear anything remotely considered not fashionable/current. And then when recently I posted a photo of some brightly coloured trousers I’d bought (which seem to be “in”, looking at the women in their 20s round here) I was told I was too old to be wearing stuff like that and would look ridiculous. Can’t win. 😁

Well, quite.

Basically it’s ageism. I’ve noticed a lot of middle aged instagram people (I’m 44 btw) wearing pink adidas bold trainers. They seem to be the new “in” thing amongst women my age; which I have no doubt makes them complete a no no for the youngsters like my dd (aged 21). It’s basically a case of once it reaches my age group it’s past it. And I hate that. It’s not the clothes itself, it’s the fact someone over 35 is daring to wear it.

Ageism really is the last acceptable form of bigotry in society.

It may surprise you @beachcitygirl but there is no choice being middle aged, other than being dead.

If you're lucky enough to reach middle age and even old age you will understand.

MySweetGeorgina · 02/04/2025 08:33

This whole conversation annoys me

lots of women in their 30s, 40s, 50s and older stared wearing flowery midi dresses, white trainers and a denim jacket. Perfect for the British climate, summery but comfortable and looked nice … the “cool” teens never wore that trend anyway. The hate it gets is pure bullying and misogyny, even by other women, who cannot bear a whole cohort of women feeling good in their skin….

don’t they know they are past it!

the whole attitude stinks

it was never a fashionable look as such, it just was embraced by many (popular)

then some people cannot bear seeing older women happy and carefree

personally never wore this look as I look awful in midi dresses and prefer maxi or mini, but this whole debate is just laced with misogyny, especially hatred of middle aged women, or horror of horrors: mums. … you could not sink lower than looking like you are a mum I guess 🧐

Noroomfor · 30/03/2025 21:05

Well surely even with trainer socks your feet are hot and sweaty?
I'm a sandals in summer person - I have multiple pairs.

Do you live in a particularly cold area because I'm in Scotland and it's certainly warm enough here for sandals. Obviously not in winter but it will certainly be warm enough for them soon.

It depends on the person, my feet don't get sweaty at all, even at the gym.

sesquipedalian · 30/03/2025 20:23

My DS who keeps up with this sort of thing assures me that you can wear any trainers you like so long as they aren’t white. The white trainer is apparently out!

Yeah it’s all coloured trainers now ,
They don’t go with half the clothes they are wearing now , but they still wear them cause they’re in 😂
I don’t care , I still wear white cause they look classy & for me they go 😂

SpringHasSprungg · 30/03/2025 20:33

I only saw a very few women wearing this look last year, complete with cross body bag so I think it’s definitely out. It’s a shame as it’s one of my best looks, I’ll probably still wear my dresses but with different footwear and bags. I’ve also bought a few belts so will try these with the dresses to see if that updates them.

Edited

Belts can completely change look of dress !
I hate those cross over bags , never wore them

Brefugee · 02/04/2025 09:21

I have a uniform. In summer it is a long skirt/dress with chucks (hi-tops when not really warm, shoe-type when warm) or sandals when it's really hot.
In winter it is a long skirt/dress with thick tights, docks and a hoodie.

I've been wearing that since the mid 80s. As have many of my cohort. It is nothing to do with age.

I think the problem was it became a uniform. I went to a festival a couple of years ago and Every. Single. Woman. Looked. The. Same. Flowery dress, white trainers, denim jacket, cross body bag. It was embarrassing. It makes middle aged women look like sheep. (I am a middle aged woman btw so no ageism here.)

I don’t particularly care about something being ‘in’ but I can’t stand looking the same as everyone else.

Right. I find the herd tendency really strange. I don’t know why people want to look like everyone else. It’s something I go out of my way to avoid.

Dramatic · 02/04/2025 11:23

I've never worn a floral dress in my life, I hate dresses and only wear them at weddings. I wear oversized jumpers or t shirts with leggings or cycling shorts and either trainers or boots. I want to feel comfortable and I've never felt comfortable in a dress.
