Is the floral dress and white trainers look out?

garricces · 30/03/2025 20:21

So it’s been really nice as we all know. My go to for work is the floral dress and white trainers and I was told by my younger colleague this look is “out”

I know it doesn’t matter as long as you like what you wear, but I’m also conscious of not looking stylish but keeping my look “fresh”

Of course women will want to keep wearing this. Dresses are floaty and have nice patterns/colours and this makes many women happy. If you're middle aged getting to wear trainers with dresses is a fucking revelation. I spent years in uncomfortable shoes and to be able to dash about in something flat that actually stays on and is bouncy - my feet love me for it. So not a style that I'd be quick to give up. Happy to change the colours of new trainers I buy but I'm not throwing out perfectly good year old ones without wearing them again.

@Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice I had/have no idea if they were in or out or 'all the rage'.
I needed a pair of comfortable shoes for a lot of city walking I often do (often 6 miles in a day.)

I can't wear ballet flats and I don't like open toed shoes in the city (too many experiences of people standing on my toes.)

They fitted the bill as I have very narrow feet and struggle to find any shoes to fit.

I ordered loads of styles and brands to try on and those worked for me.

Maybe not insult posters without knowing the full circumstances?

HTH.

Edited

Did you just accuse me of insulting you because I repeated your own words back to you? My goodness, what a hypocrite you are, both in your 'my New Balance sneakers are functional but your New Balance sneakers are influenced' way, and in a 'you're all gullible but don't you dare insult me by calling me gullible' way. Grin

NB are notoriously wide fitting BTW.

Dress for your shape and vibe not the current most up to date style. That's how to appear timeless and classy. Kate Middleton doesn't switch it up every season.

You could update the trainers to a neutral colour, get a new jacket maybe. But dress and trainers is easy, comfortable and suits most people

The future Queen looks amazing but be under no illusion she wears a seasonal royal "uniform".

Bunny65 · 01/04/2025 01:13

I love a floral dress and have been wearing them since my young days. But I wear block colours too and geometrics. I think we all have our style and what suits us. I would never wear trainers with dresses but I like boots. You’ll never see me in a trouser suit or waistcoat but they look good on others. Embrace your own style.

I absolutely love dresses. I'm not even 5ft and I find dresses can be way more flattering on me than trousers so that look has always been my thing. It's dresses and boots in the winter lol. I always get compliments and people often ask me where I bought such and such item so I'll stick with it.

Ditto!
Love dresses for almost any occasion! 🤷🏼‍♀️

JudithOx · 01/04/2025 01:43

Not for me! I've got problem feet and I love dresses, so it's dresses and boots in winter, dresses and trainers in summer (I love white ones). I have never followed fashion, and I always get compliments on what I wear.

I think following trends grants a very boring, uniformed style...

I've only just started wearing the white trainers, and they're out already?!

Although maybe people like me are the reason, given I'm over 40 and wearing them, probably puts the younger ones off 😂

I'm nearly 65 and wear trainers because my orthotics fit into them...I guess I'm responsible for the final death knell of the look.

Sorry!

Surprised to hear white trainers are out. All the baby groups, soft play and farms etc I go to with the children, everyone is wearing Veja white trainers.

Vejas are definitely out, I haven’t seen a single person wearing them now

Oh yes but it's not dramatically different l, she changes certain silhouettes but always dresses for her shape etc.

Except the Princess of Wales 😂

Honestly, I'm glad I'm old enough not to care if someone thinks a certain brand of trainers is in or out.

Has no one any idea of how ridiculous this sounds? And how people worry about if the brand is 'fashionable'.

Get a life.

Daisyrainbows · 30/03/2025 20:22

Yep it’s out. As soon as middle aged women wear it the younger ones move on. Then it’s a couple of years of older people wearing it then it’s out I think

Ha ha, and fair enough. I find the worst is when you're looking for something in a shop and then you find someone much older looking at the same thing 😆

EmmaEmEmz · 01/04/2025 07:53

I'm 40 and floral dresses and white trainers have been my staple look for about ten years...along with skinny jeans they'll have to prise them out of my cold, dead hands.

LunaNorth · 01/04/2025 07:54

Did young lasses ever wear a floral dress and white trainers? I thought it was only ever us over 50s 35s that embraced that look.

fratellia · 01/04/2025 09:32

I’d say it was pretty inconspicuous look- white trainers are a staple, denim jacket staple, florals for spring hardly groundbreaking. And it just makes sense as an outfit- trainers practical and comfy, long dress keeps you covered but cool in warm weather and feels feminine, denim jacket matches everything and handy to have if it’s a bit chillier. I can see why it’s such a popular option.

Maybe over 40s...but they are now 50! I like the floral dress and denim jacket look - but white trainers never looked right on my corned beef, thick ankled legs....

Op said, "My go to for work is the floral dress and white trainers and I was told by my younger colleague this look is “out”"

Can you really imagine a younger colleague telling an older male, "You can't wear those chinos and brown shoes anymore - they're out" Different standards.

Obviously mens fashions do change, but more slowly.

Yes absolutely men tell each other what to wear. DH and his over 40’s colleagues were made into a meme at his work for wearing slim fit jeans and chelsea boots at a work do.
My Dad was presented with a pair of trainers as a birthday gift at work after being mocked for wearing shoes to every occasion.

They are definitely ' in' at the city i live and work!

Wow, imagine having looked at everyone’s feet in order to establish what shoes they’re not wearing 😂

I'm well past my trendy youth, but even I know the trainers/floral dress thing has had its day. And white trainers in particular mark you out as well out of touch. Sorry.

Oh no, how will I cope with being ‘well out of touch’ 😂 out of touch with what or with whom? Who is the arbiter for this?!

If you don’t live in London you should get there immediately, because I hate to tell you but there are many well out of touch women here today and yesterday, who clearly need your assistance! I just counted six pairs of women wearing white trainers in my tube carriage, help!

I suppose knowing what trainers are in/out can be helpful if you are in the market for buying trainers. But what if you already have decent trainers that aren't in the current fashionable colour - most people will still need to wear them rather than chuck them out

Maybe it depends on towns and regions. Someone mentioned new balance being the rage a couple of years back but virtually all the teens round here are in either new balance or adidas.

I like my Vejas, and I do see a fair few where I live. I probably won’t wear them with floral dresses any more though as that look just seems a bit tired and overdone; like it or not, we all subconsciously absorb what’s out there. I’m always up for a fresh look - that doesn’t make me a mindless slave to fashion, just someone who takes an interest. It’s like if you’ve always used lemon but someone tells you about yuzu - you’re up for trying it and you might like it better. I don’t understand why taking a similar interest in fashion tends to lead to a defensive reaction on here.

notwavingbutdrowning1 · 01/04/2025 15:55

By quoting your post I wasn’t accusing you of a defensive reaction, @fratellia! Just making a general observation.

Because a lemon is 30p and trainers are £100?
Lemons have a shelf life or you use them up, whereas chucking out shoes and clothes is just wasting resources and leaving a legacy of waste in the oceans or landfill.
All because a name on them is suddenly not 'in' any more.

Can you see there is a difference between 'taking an interest in fashion' and how shallow it is to focus on the motif/name on a pair of trainers?
