In my defence, I have had a horrible time featuring death which has left me on a swing between dark depression and f*ck it do it now you might be dead tomorrow.

I bought a pair of shoes that I really liked but were a ridiculous amount to spend on shoes of any kind. I feel a bit sick when I think of it. I will keep them as its not bankrupting but it is stupid out of the savings money. I do like them but it was really really really stupid. No one should spend that much on a pair of shoes.

Hoping I am not alone and someone can make me feel a bit better with similar tale that didn't end horribly.

Spent £10K on horse. Told DH it was £3K and said horse then promptly racked up 4K of vets bills in the first year!
Completely couldn't afford it.

Oh you are not alone £8k horse, spent over £10k vets bills in 3 years......Colic surgery (that was fun), a £500 splinter (which the vet decided was fine left in situ) and a pulled back muscle (from being a twat in the field). Once he was fit and well it became he has all talent and athletic ability of a baked potato....
I absolutely adore him and he's the best money I've ever spent. 😂🤦

mindutopia · 30/03/2025 21:27

I drunkenly bought not one, but two horses! It wasn’t even at the same time. Like I got drunk and bought a horse on more than one occasion. (This is not completely stupid, I am a horsey person, but I am time poor and having a horse is probably not the most sensible decision I ever made, I have sold one now but I still have the other and he’s lovely). I gave up drinking though! 😂

Hysterectomynext · 30/03/2025 21:27

Also op if you happen to be a uk 4 you can have my Italian handmade boots too so that you don’t have to feel so bad about the shoes.

but 20 years later, we still get pleasure from them.

That is a lot of money. I'm assuming it's solid silver at that price!
It does make me feel better that you say you are still using them 20 years later and get pleasure out of it - I suppose if you then look at it as a yearly cost.

I think the shoes make me feel so bad because they aren't things that last in that way generally because they wear out even if repaired.

I once spent £200 that I didn't really have on a pair of gold-coloured Dior fabric sneakers. There was short-term financial pain, but I wore them almost every day for a couple of years until there were holes in the soles (the uppers held up better), and my feet were very happy in them. I would do it again, but maybe I'm silly that way!

MayaPinion · 30/03/2025 21:28

£500 having a print framed. I’d wanted the print itself since 1999 when I saw it in a gallery in Birmingham New Street Station. I finally tracked one down 300 miles away and happily paid what they wanted, but the original frame had to be broken to get it into the car.

Quite. Makes the £26 I spent on a paperback of The Chalet School and the Oberland (admittedly 20 years ago & I had very little money at the time but I was so happy to finally own a copy) pale into insignificance!

Edited

You're my people.

I found a hardback of Exploits in a secondhand bookshop on my birthday this year. Reasonable price for a reprint with a dust jacket.... but I already have it in hardback. I paid £25 for a dust jacket.

When i first met my husband he bought me a beautiful full set of Bobby Brown makeup brushes. When I worked out how much they cost I couldn't bring myself to use them, I don't wear lots of makeup
so didn't want to spoil them. They are still sat in my drawer and make me smile every time I see them. We've been married nearly 20 years !!!!!

About 10 years ago I spent £4k on a guitar I couldn't afford, so I bought it on credit. I made the repayments for two years before selling the guitar for half of what it cost, which just about paid off the loan. I had so much guilt associated with that guitar, even though it was wonderful I couldn't enjoy it. What a lesson that was. I have my eye on a vintage model now, but won't buy anything until I have the cash in my hand to pay for it.

You should see if you can get them re-soled!

€1,500 on a Versace skirt that's still in my wardrobe with the tags on. I absolutely love it but have nowhere to wear it.

Also many many pairs of €100/€200 shoes that I've never worn as they are too uncomfortable. I have now admitted I cannot wear heals at all so have stopped buying more.

Not shoe related but I splurged on some concert tickets.....good seats but £230!!!! Eeek!!! On the plus side.....big Christmas presents are sorted 😁😁

I’ve just spent £250 on theatre tickets! It’s a lot of money but I can afford it (I save) and it’s a treat for DH. No regrets

NotOnThsAsosChristmasCardList · 30/03/2025 21:35

Only thing recently is a Kate loxton bag (was only £30) I brought on holiday loving it got it home and it just isn't nice!
Nothing compared to some of these I could afford it but who can afford to waste money 😆

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 30/03/2025 21:35

@Blankscreen Remind her of this when she wants a car.

@edwinbear Fair play to you unwrapping your cutlery on a Sunday night for a load of nosey Parkers. It looks lovely cutlery

triggers34 · 30/03/2025 21:36

I bought a hideous Louis Vuitton bag in the 90s with a credit card £700 I think . Took over a year to pay it off . Funnily enough I dug it out today , it needs repaired by both d rings which I’m considering whether a shoe shop would be able to do, before I brave Vinted with it !
enjoy your shoes OP !

ReturnoftheBink · 30/03/2025 21:36

WhyDidIDiddle · 30/03/2025 20:06

After @edwinbear s post about the cutlery, I googled silver cutlery to look at prices. It lead me to this on the Asprey site - if you would like to "Enhance your dining experience with Asprey's Bobsleigh Salt and Pepper Shaker set" (which is admittedly very cute) you can do that for ... guess how much?

. . . . .

yes

£7,950.

What have you done to me?! I need this in my life 😬

Standard horse owner behaviour in my experience 😂

I knew someone who could only buy grey horses as she had an old grey nag (without being mean) when they got together and she just kept trading up. He never knew despite the thousands of £ difference in price.

Do you mean she replaced one grey horse with another and her husband didn’t realise? Or am I reading that wrong 😄

istabraq · 30/03/2025 21:37

Oh I did just spend £250 on a stags head made out of dried flowers.

I love it so

That’s how I interpreted it. Genius idea! Did they all have the same name?

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 30/03/2025 21:41

@Gundogday Wouldn’t have mattered with a man it could’ve been male or female and he wouldn’t notice.

My dh could tell if a cars had paint at 50 paces but otherwise not observant.

IShotTheDeputyItWasMe · 30/03/2025 21:41

Last year I bought:

  • a lumea. I have pale hair on white skin. Not sure what possessed me.
  • a bear. Used a few times and I think I can see a difference but I don't like using it.
  • an electric pelvic floor exerciser. I'm not sure I use the right muscles when using it plus it's a faff to charge.
  • a soup maker. Waste of money and a faff to wash.
  • a Dyson hairdryer. Something half the price would have been just as good.

Unfortunately, that was about 15 years ago, and they are long gone!

For the Versace skirt, you have to make an occasion! Through my job, I can sometimes get heavily discounted tickets for musical events. So I figured I'd splurge instead, on a meal at a restaurant of the type where you have to leave a credit-card deposit to make a reservation. Yes, it was gone in an hour, but the meal and its presentation were a performance in themselves (not to mention tasting amazing!), and made the whole evening a very special experience.

edwinbear · 30/03/2025 21:43

@istabraq we need the story behind that! Did you just see it and love it? Or consciously search for a dried flower stags head?!
