In my defence, I have had a horrible time featuring death which has left me on a swing between dark depression and f*ck it do it now you might be dead tomorrow.

I bought a pair of shoes that I really liked but were a ridiculous amount to spend on shoes of any kind. I feel a bit sick when I think of it. I will keep them as its not bankrupting but it is stupid out of the savings money. I do like them but it was really really really stupid. No one should spend that much on a pair of shoes.

Hoping I am not alone and someone can make me feel a bit better with similar tale that didn't end horribly.

6000 pounds for a hot tub that I used about 5 times. It was all bells and whistles with flashing lights and music. I put it down to widow madness where common sense seems to fly out of the window. I got rid quite quickly and never regretted it

InSpainTheRain · 30/03/2025 21:05

Definitely in the past I've felt down and then bought something I really regret. My tips for avoiding it are close the browser quickly and run away! or you can leave it for 24 hours and go back to it to see if you still like it (you probably won't), only spend what you have in your current accout, never use Klarna (or similar). I also use moneybox, so if I don't buy something I really wanted I put that money in my savings account (e.g. if I see some face cream I really want, I put the cost of that into savings). It's amazing how that builds up!

ozyin · 30/03/2025 21:08

A musical instrument I spent £2700 on. I do play it all the time, but I'm pretty certain it's no better than one that's 10 times less cost. In fact, the tuning on one note never seems to be right, in a way I've never encountered with cheaper instruments.

And then I'm currently agonising over spending £1750 on an original painting for DHs significant birthday next month. He will love the subject, but the artist, although professional, and fairly good, isn't outstanding, but then if he was, it would be £100,000s or more, which I definitely can't afford.

That is still a thousand pounds a year… for cutlery…

£20 ish/week... £10/week really, split between the two of them.

Actually £1.37 a day (each) to eat beans on toast like royalty. Totally worth it Grin

Didimum · 30/03/2025 21:09

I’ve decided I'm going to drop around £2.5k on a designer bag this year. Either Gucci or YSL.

minimadgirl · 30/03/2025 21:10

Had a teenie, tiny bit of a midlife crisis after my husband buggered off with a much younger woman. Ended up moving back In with family and had lost almost everything.
The answer to that is obviously to buy a highly impractical, convertible classic car.

9 years later that car is still the love of my life. Even more impractical with now having 2 kids and no rear seat belts. But I still use her a lot, she's my freedom, my fun, and worth every single penny.

GenerousGardener · 30/03/2025 21:10

Had a ring remodelled. The jeweller didn’t do what I asked him to do. It took a whole year for him to make. Cost me 1k. When I saw it I could have cried.

Took it home, wore it a bit but I wasn’t happy with it as the ring wasn’t what I asked for.

Im having redone right now. The people that are doing it have talked to me every step of the way. It’s taken six weeks and I’m paying for it in scrap gold. I’m going to try it on tomorrow, it’s not totally finished they just need to make sure the size is right.

The first jeweller saw me coming….

I’m all in for £500k for 5 years on boarding school fees. Sometimes wonder what the hell we were thinking. Praying neither of us lose our jobs between now and then. I grew up in a country where boarding school isn’t really a thing and have woken up in a cold sweat more than once with the weight of the ever tightening noose.

On the plus side, I used to have a very expensive handbag and shoe habit.
I don’t anymore.

I bought a macbook years ago, on interest free credit. Hated it as always used Windows. Hardly used it and begrudge the monthly payments.

I did the same. Persevered for two weeks but HATED it.

Doing up house and needed a new sofa. Saw one in a furniture store dh and I liked to browse. I was with my dm and sofa and 2 armchairs were
£2.2k in the sale. It was good quality leather. When told dh about it he nearly had a fit at spending that much on a sofa. This was mid nineties. He came and looked at it and loved it so we bought it. 30 years later it's still going strong and the design could be described as nearly Art Deco.

Mudkipper · 30/03/2025 21:12

Not in the same league but I spent £350 on cutlery in Heal's about 30 years ago. That must be the equivalent of about £1000 now. I don't use it THAT often, but it gives me pleasure. I've got a posh inherited dinner service too, that rarely gets used because it predates dishwashers but my everyday china is Wedgwood and it's beautiful. And dishwasher safe.

Sminty2 · 30/03/2025 21:12

In the early 80’s, I bought a huge Dualit toaster that cost more than a month’s rent in my new flat. Still got the toaster and it is brilliant.

We spent just under £1000 2 years ago on two wooden "steamer" chairs which we didn't need and have barely used. We can't leave them out in the garden because they cost too much money but they are ridiculously heavy and difficult to move in and out of the garage. Complete waste of money and I really regret it. I think I had a moment of madness imagining myself as some sort of Edwardian heroine lying in a stately home garden rather than a fat middle aged woman with a small town garden.

Edited to add: £20k on cutlery?????

Edited

@AnnaQuayInTheUk Can I see a picture of your chairs as DH and i have been considering some special garden chairs but I am concerned about the heavy weight and durability and wonder of you have them - pm if it's easier.
Thanks.
I spent £350 on my going away outfit in 1996. After I had paid for it I was honestly wondering why I had spent that amount.
However, I still wear it for special occasions to this day and intended to wear it for DD1's graduation this year and DD2's next year.

FeatherChops · 30/03/2025 21:14

Oh lots!

£400 on an antique 18 ct gold diamond and sapphire snake ring )bargain actually!)

£150 on another antique ring (bargain again!)

£80 on a Georgian cut glass perfume bottle ( I like miniature antiques)

£200 on Sisley make up bits

£40 on a little bay tree

I could go on. I like treating myself

Namechange2609 · 30/03/2025 21:14

I bought a GHD rise hair styler this week.. can’t afford it but very much in my fuck it element!

enjoy your trainers :)

TheChosenTwo · 30/03/2025 21:14

A coat that was half a months wages the time, I was tipsy and chilly, a dangerous combination!
I still have the coat, it’s a timeless classic and I have no regrets. Even though it was beans on toast time for a while 😂
Other than that though I can’t think of anything. While I’m a big spender I do tend to know what’s a good idea and what isn’t!! For now anyway…

Gundogday · 30/03/2025 21:16

The dog - cost a lot more than expected (ongoing).

Sparklebelle1024 · 30/03/2025 21:16

I should say my DD was 10 when we went to WDW not a newborn, I realise my post reads like I took her as a baby!

fourquenelles · 30/03/2025 21:18

1:12 solid silver Georgian style sauce boats, platters, soup tureens etc for my dolls house. The stuff in the butler's pantry comes to over £2K but when I open the doors and see it it gives me great joy. I am not finished collecting yet either.

Right,, it's in the basket ...20k cutlery

Edited

Wow, I'm not usually fussy about cutlery but I really don't like those at all! Those gaps would do my head in. You'd throw them in the sink (although actually I guess maybe you wouldn't, your servants would discreetly carry them away to be hand-polished) and they'd come out with bits of pasta stuck through the holes.

Sulu17 · 30/03/2025 21:18

wear your shoes and enjoy them, OP x

Condolences for your loss.

LurcherMumma · 30/03/2025 21:18

@HappyHunting101 I will say I got incredible use out of my Lumea but it just stopped working, way out of warranty and I am trying hard not to think about how much it cost me.

HeyThereDelila · 30/03/2025 21:20

A charcoal drawing of DS by a really good artist. It cost £3.5k plus £250 for the frame.

Absolutely worth every penny. It looks incredible, is so life like and a truly beautiful piece of art. I justify the cost by saying we’ll have it on our walls until we die probably the wall of the room in our care home and then hopefully DS will keep it, and his DC if he has any.

I had a very, very cheap wedding dress, no proper honeymoon, did my own wedding cake and most of the flowers, so that’s how I justified it. No regrets at all.

You sound like a wonderful mother.

Hysterectomynext · 30/03/2025 21:25

I’ve spent hundreds on a pair of boots because Kate moss had a pair. They didn’t have my size. I convinced myself that the size that they did have would be fine. Absolutely agony to wear. A size too small at least. I wore maybe twice. I still have them because they were so expensive. I’d happily offer as a prize to a deserving stranger come to think of it.

op I think it depends. If you love the shoes you shouldn’t feel bad. You’re allowed nice things. If they are going to make you feel down can you return them?

And regarding cutlery- I have very expensive cutlery too. Not thousands but hundreds. I love it and am happy to have it. The biggest issue is that I bought it before children and they do things like take forks to school and lose them. That’s the biggest problem with it.

but I’m a big believer in buying nice things if you can. They bring me joy. I just stick to trainers for foot wear though. Too old and fat now
