In my defence, I have had a horrible time featuring death which has left me on a swing between dark depression and f*ck it do it now you might be dead tomorrow.

I bought a pair of shoes that I really liked but were a ridiculous amount to spend on shoes of any kind. I feel a bit sick when I think of it. I will keep them as its not bankrupting but it is stupid out of the savings money. I do like them but it was really really really stupid. No one should spend that much on a pair of shoes.

Hoping I am not alone and someone can make me feel a bit better with similar tale that didn't end horribly.

I really want to spend £200 on a dualit toaster and this thread makes me feel better about spending that 😅

I spent £6 on a dualit toaster at a boot fare over twenty years ago. It’s still going stong. If it died I’d buy a brand new one. It would be £200 well spent.

  1. a Pug
  2. not bought, but dipping into my pension pot now I’m over 55 to enjoy life while I’m still fit (ish)! Waiting til 67 is too much of a gamble to me as I’ve lost too many ‘young’ friends to cancer.
Oceangrey · 07/08/2025 23:41

I bought a £400 jacket because I thought the price was in a different currency and that it was the equivalent of £40. It's vintage Miu Miu so would have been way too good to be true!

On Monday i got my lenses replaced i.e complete lens replacement surgery. I got this based on a thread on here around may time on things that made a major life difference. I spent a lot of money on various things based on that thread! Mostly life enhancing. My new eyes cost 9200 with a blue light reduction to 8200. I am now 5 days later and it is amazing. I got the latest lenses and can see distance intermediate and close up. I wake in the morning and can’t believe yet that i can see without glasses. Still look for my glasses occasionally like a phantom limb. It’s amazing to me.

I had a very strong prescription.

Can you see sunscreen on people’s faces? My DH had this surgery, and now has supersonic eyes, able to see sunscreen (to me it is invisible, to him it appears like really patchy streaks - he was really disconcerted at first!! Apparently the sky looks different too - much brighter. Apparently the old lenses will have aged and gone quite yellow, so there is a different colour quality to everything. He got used to it really quickly though :) (and he also doesn’t regret it at all!)

IBelieveinSomething · 08/08/2025 20:34

Hi stouter i don’t know yet but I suspect so. I’m early days I’ve been just inside so far. Not seen anyone with sunscreen yet but suspect i could see it.

i’ve also got latest bone anchored hearing aid with tv streamer. I can hear things in the background on tv that no one else could hear so I’ve got supersonic hearing and now ‘potentially and still to be tested’ supersonic sight!

What is complete lens replacement surgery? Is it like cataract surgery or Lasik?

Paaseitjes · 10/08/2025 09:13

I bought a 2nd hand children's bike trailer when I was breast feeding and baby was 4 weeks old. Paid £400 which would have been a bargain if it worked, but gradually finding more and more metal fatigue so it's going to the tip

JaceLancs · 10/08/2025 19:03

Nearly always jewellery and I very rarely regret it!
Also splurge on Lego and same applies

Londonrach1 · 10/08/2025 19:05

Depends...can you afford it and do you love it. I never spent more than 15 on shoes ... although dud pay 25 on walking shoes but saved my ankles ...

edwinbear · 30/03/2025 19:51

If you really like the shoes and you can afford them, it’s really not a waste of money. You’re allowed to have nice things! DH and I spent £20k on a cutlery set when we were young, pre-kids and had money. That’s arguably a ridiculous amount of money to spend on knives & forks, but 20 years later, we still get pleasure from them.

Shut up 20k on cutlery, are you actually serious?

VeterinaryCareAssistant · 10/08/2025 19:24

Just under £300 on a dog toothbrush.

Thank you!

This was my thread that when I posted I felt a bit sick about. I've come back to report that many months later, I am really glad I bought those shoes. They were insanely expensive but every time I wear them I get a lot of pleasure and they often get compliments. The passing of time makes a difference I suppose as the more you use something the cost per wear decreases. With much hind sight I don't regret my purchase at all.

I often think of this thread and some of the lovely encouragement posted here to me and especially @edwinbear s beautiful cutlery story.

Really interested in the cutlery but 26 years ago I bought a pair of Versace leopard print shoes for £300 ( reduced from £550). I am still wearing them but I have spent a fortune in taxis as I will not wear them to walk long distances so I can keep them good. Going to give them to my granddaughter.
