In my defence, I have had a horrible time featuring death which has left me on a swing between dark depression and f*ck it do it now you might be dead tomorrow.

I bought a pair of shoes that I really liked but were a ridiculous amount to spend on shoes of any kind. I feel a bit sick when I think of it. I will keep them as its not bankrupting but it is stupid out of the savings money. I do like them but it was really really really stupid. No one should spend that much on a pair of shoes.

Hoping I am not alone and someone can make me feel a bit better with similar tale that didn't end horribly.

I impulsively bought a painting for £1400. It’s an original and I still love it 14 years later but at the time I was like, WTAF have I done?????

Turns out, I bought a piece of original art that I loved then and still love now.

I didn’t have the money then to pay for it - bought it on my credit card - but I paid it off over a few months and don’t regret the purchase for a moment.

Don't beat yourself up look at all these men having mid wife crisis buying sports car and weekends away with their mistress you are small time spender compared with it. You deserve a treat - wear and enjoy them!

Mid wife crisis is the best typo!!

I have silver cutlery, because for some reason we found 3 sets in my grandfather's attic when we cleared his house. I don't think it's worth anything like £20k, so I am intrigued by this set and really want to know what it is!

I love the idea of a mid-wife crisis. Please tell me that isn't a typo?! I visualise your exhusband having that vanity trophy wife as number 2 before settling for someone sensible again when it all goes wrong.

My daughter's prom dress. I feel ill if I overthink it and am paying it off gradually but it was more than my wedding dress! (We're not talking posh cutlery prices here or even thousands)
She didn't realise how much it was until a few weeks later when I told a friend (and was horrified as knows we're not exactly rich!) but the look on her face when she tried it on and just "knew" it was "the dress"....
I only have one child, I can't afford any more!!!!

RabbitsRock · 30/03/2025 20:30

I keep buying stuff online using Klarna & Clearpay so that it doesn’t feel real in a way & the other day looked around & realised just how much I’d got. The other day I bought 2 rings on TJC & then a matching necklace for one of the rings & it was over £150 which I don’t really have. Plus I rarely go out so will probably only wear the necklace at Christmas. I definitely have an addictive personality!

ValBiro · 30/03/2025 20:30

Yes, a 'knotty ones' cardigan after recommendations on here, actually. I'd been on the hunt for the unicorn of black cardigans for a long time, and this one appeared to tick all the boxes. Ethically produced and handmade from a small business, slouchy, 100% cotton, pockets... It was £400! But so heavy owing to being 100% knitted cotton, I just couldn't wear it!

stclementine · 30/03/2025 20:31

Spent nearly £40K on a used Audi A6 which I can’t really afford the repayments on, but it gives me a lot of pleasure to drive and is so very pretty that I don’t regret it for a minute. My justification was that my A4 was nearing 10 years old and would start becoming expensive —yes I know Audis last for decades but I needed a reason to replace it with something prettier with more toys—

Blankscreen · 30/03/2025 20:33

A horse for my DD.

Currently in for about £10k what with buying him, saddle, rugs etc.

Worst part is she scared of him and won't even ride him 🤬

The prom dress business is insane. I had 2 boys. Both borrowed my husband's DJ for their prom and wore their school shoes. No issues. Friends of mine with girls spent £££ on the dress and then paid for shoes, hair, professional MUA etc. Completely ridiculous.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 30/03/2025 20:36

@stclementine my son has just bought a used Audi A4 and it's gorgeous. I'm very jealous. Especially as it cost less than £900! He's a car mechanic and so can sort out issues if needed.

DinoLil · 30/03/2025 20:36

£75 for my rescue dog. £2.5k on vets fees a few months later, gulp.

SoOxon · 30/03/2025 20:38

O wow OP, how long have you got? so many, too many, squirming here

we all do it but don’t speak of it, often after a prolonged period of austerity
the ‘what the hell I’m worth it’ spend up

We impulse booked a last minute 3 night trip to Venice, paying extra for a canal view.

I’m currently working extra shifts to pay it off, having put it on interest free credit.

It was the most amazing trip and I have no regrets, best trip ever. I also have had a significant bereavement and it has definitely made me rethink things. I’m trying to do things on my bucket list rather than thinking I’ll do it one day….that day may not come!

I completely agree and Venice is a magical place, money well spent creating memories!

edwinbear · 30/03/2025 20:38

OP, yes it’s an Asprey set. They were a client of mine and we did get a discount….but still! For about 5 years every birthday/Christmas we’d buy each other a set of fish knives, or a set of teaspoons etc. Not something we’d waste that sort of money on now, but they are very lovely.

MustBeGinOclock · 30/03/2025 20:40

I've been feeling guilty for spending £400 on a new hobby, id hoped I'd be able to sell items I make or have some requests to make things to offset the cost but so far no real interest. Not even sure I'm enjoying doing it tbh. Ah well, we live and learn.

MrBiscuits24 · 30/03/2025 20:40

Love the 20k cutlery derail. Please can we see the cutlery? And the shoes?

sweeneytoddsrazor · 30/03/2025 20:40

Ok I am not going to question the price of the cutlery but you still use it 20 years later? I have to buy new teaspoons every couple of months. 😂

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 30/03/2025 20:41

@edwinbear DH and I spent £20k on a cutlery set when we were young I am waiting for a pic of said cutlery!!

Icanttakethisanymore · 30/03/2025 20:41

twistyizzy · 30/03/2025 20:13

Spent £10K on horse. Told DH it was £3K and said horse then promptly racked up 4K of vets bills in the first year!
Completely couldn't afford it.

Standard horse owner behaviour in my experience 😂

I knew someone who could only buy grey horses as she had an old grey nag (without being mean) when they got together and she just kept trading up. He never knew despite the thousands of £ difference in price.

Chinupandtitsout · 30/03/2025 20:41

I enjoyed my wine too much last weekend and thought I’d invest £500 in shares. Thought it hadn’t gone through so put my last 500 in. I know nothing about investing. Realised that I’d invested in US stocks so when I got paid, thought I’d make a sensible decision to invest in china. I have no fucking idea what I’ve done. I need to hide my phone when I’m being a twat.

PoorUncleBarry · 30/03/2025 20:41

Don't beat yourself up Op. After I lost my mum, dad and sister in very quick and tragic circumstances I had a nervous breakdown. I started collecting the toys that I had once owned as a kid ... it racked up and now I have an entire room in my house kitted out in vintage kids toys and TV show merchandise. Makes me very happy being in there. Nobody knows but I'm well into the thousands now. Not in debt, I keep them dusted and I'm happy so fuck it.

Mylittlebobble · 30/03/2025 20:42

@edwinbear your 20k cutlery set is my new Roman Empire. Unfortunately, I think I'm going to use it to justify a lot of future spending. 😆

SnugglyJumpersMakeItBetter · 30/03/2025 20:43

£300 on a (replica) Victorian dress for a murder mystery party! No one else dressed up, so it was both an expensive and embarrassing mistake!! It's sitting in my wardrobe sneering at me! I would like to sell it to recoup some of the money, but no-one would actually want to buy it, because fashion has moved on since the 1860s!!

Now I'm curious, what's the hobby?!? Is there definitely no spark of joy at all? I hope you find it.
