In my defence, I have had a horrible time featuring death which has left me on a swing between dark depression and f*ck it do it now you might be dead tomorrow.

I bought a pair of shoes that I really liked but were a ridiculous amount to spend on shoes of any kind. I feel a bit sick when I think of it. I will keep them as its not bankrupting but it is stupid out of the savings money. I do like them but it was really really really stupid. No one should spend that much on a pair of shoes.

Hoping I am not alone and someone can make me feel a bit better with similar tale that didn't end horribly.

OP, yes it’s an Asprey set. They were a client of mine and we did get a discount….but still! For about 5 years every birthday/Christmas we’d buy each other a set of fish knives, or a set of teaspoons etc. Not something we’d waste that sort of money on now, but they are very lovely.

I find that really depressing - a set of overpriced fish knives as a present. How much joy can you get out of a fucking fish knife?

edwinbear · 30/03/2025 21:45

@IShotTheDeputyItWasMe you bought a bear??

Spangers · 30/03/2025 21:45

Business class flights to NY 10 years ago in a “fuck it” moment when we were having a nightmare time with a house buying situation and wanted to get away from the stress. I had loads of air miles and family donated some too so it wasn’t hugely more than premium economy in the end but still felt like a moment of madness.

Am about to spend over £400 on a 5th birthday party but DC has had a tricky few months with some health issues and invasive tests so I feel like spoiling them.

LadyFlumpalot · 30/03/2025 21:49

I dropped the equivalent of a small house deposit on a new engine for my track car. I still feel very guilty about it - but it brings me immense joy. I also spent £250 on used Louboutins that I've never worn because they are so uncomfortable! Much the same as you, both were shortly after my mum died and my mind was very much in seize the moment mode.

AyeRight78 · 30/03/2025 21:49

In the last few weeks I’ve been on the hunt for a new pair of trainers and ordered 8 pairs in total expecting to return 7. So far I’m keeping 2 and still waiting for 2. So it’s possible my 1 pair becomes 4. But I feel better knowing I’d never spend £20k on a cutlery set.

Standard horse owner behaviour in my experience 😂

I knew someone who could only buy grey horses as she had an old grey nag (without being mean) when they got together and she just kept trading up. He never knew despite the thousands of £ difference in price.

That is very very funny!

I shouldn't be surprised that a disproportionate number of these posts appear to be coming from horsey people. "Spending sensibly" and "horse" don't tend to go together, in my experience...

About £1500 on a quilt, plus another small fortune on shipping and import taxes from the US. It's beautiful and I'm glad I own it but 4 years on it's still packed away safely because I don't want it getting worn or dirty.

I bought that shortly after my mum died - I'm detecting a theme!

That sounds like an entirely reasonable thing to do! I went a bit bonkers after my mum died but I only bought a new cheap and cheerful bookcase. Mind you it's now full and I don't want to calculate what the books cost overall...

How would you feel about unpacking the quilt and using it? I think beautiful things are meant to be used and you can always wash or repair it if it gets worn. Would also love to see a picture of it, as an aspiring quilter.

I spent £460 on coloured pencils (2 separate sets) a few years ago. I’m an amateur artist - not professional by any means and have barely used them.

These stories are making me laugh. We’re all human!

So far I'm hoping my £200 paddleboard gets more use (have used it twice).

LBFseBrom · 30/03/2025 21:56

I've done things like that, DiddleDiddle. Don't feel bad about it, you'll enjoy the shoes (probably a lot more than my handbags which I don't use). I am sorry you've had a rough time recently, things will get better.

We like them 🤷‍♀️. I grew up with parents who liked antiques. Dad taught me about craftsmanship and we spent a lot of time at antiques fairs as kids. Dad had a particular love of antique silver and gave me an antique silver photo frame as an 18th birthday present, which I treasure. I’m not so into clothes/shoes/bags (each to their own of course), but I still have a fondness for well crafted silver. I hope my DC will get pleasure from it once we’re gone - they’ve been told not to split the set up!!

iseethembloom · 30/03/2025 21:57

I’m recovering from a bereavement that came without warning.

Last week I spent (clears throat) £120 on a rock tumbler and another £30 on grit to go in it.

Finding stuff on beaches (that’s the part that’s free) is a kind of hobby of mine.

But even so. It was self indulgent and unnecessary, and I’ve been feeling guilty about it. It’s whirring away in the bathroom as I type, consuming electricity.

Hello to my people 👋👋👋

The sadder I feel, the more luxurious the holiday I book 😁

SuspiciousChipmunk · 30/03/2025 22:00

About 2 months ago on a whim I spent over £200 on Lego I heard it was a good mindfulness exercise and I wanted something to do in the evening to cheer me up. I’ve not even managed to built half of it, it’s going to take up too much space once it’s built, and I’m on a declutter phase at the moment and the last thing I need is a giant Lego structure taking up space!

EdithBond · 30/03/2025 22:01

Can you take the shoes back or sell online if beyond the return date?

I love the stag head.

I’ve just spent just short of £200,000 on renovating my flat. It looks absolutely gorgeous, we had a fabulous designer and architect, but it still makes me feel a bit sick. We also have to furnish it as we chucked out all of our shitty old furniture when we had it renovated. It’s added considerably more than we spent to the value of the flat, and I don’t intend ever moving again.

1:12 solid silver Georgian style sauce boats, platters, soup tureens etc for my dolls house. The stuff in the butler's pantry comes to over £2K but when I open the doors and see it it gives me great joy. I am not finished collecting yet either.

Would love to see a pic!

I love the idea of spending a fortune on cutlery, embracing life! I've just spent 25k on a car for my mum, took the money out of savings because I felt so strongly that I'd rather have her drive a safer car than her old, small car. Also, spent 3k on a handbag that I've kept under the bed for 2 years because it's too expensive to use. Got it out today and wore it for the first time and it gave me so much pleasure

What was the bag? Life is too short. Wear in good health!

Doing up house and needed a new sofa. Saw one in a furniture store dh and I liked to browse. I was with my dm and sofa and 2 armchairs were
£2.2k in the sale. It was good quality leather. When told dh about it he nearly had a fit at spending that much on a sofa. This was mid nineties. He came and looked at it and loved it so we bought it. 30 years later it's still going strong and the design could be described as nearly Art Deco.

Photo please, I love Art Deco.

I’ve never really understood fish knives.

Why do you need a different type of knife to eat fish?

Oceangrey · 30/03/2025 22:08

I once spent £1,600 on a chair. It's a really cool wooden Windsor style rocking chair and it was deeply discounted as the shop floor model from Heals. No regrets, I love it.

£2k on a pair of earrings, they are lovely but I keep worrying I will lose one.

I'm about to spend a lot of money on a new kitchen and although I can afford it the total cost is making me feel a bit ill.

Love the stags head!
