Delivery driver let himself into my house

I WFH. A delivery driver knocked quite loudly on my door a few days ago. I got to my hallway within 10 seconds to find a very tall man in my hallway setting the delivery down on a table and taking a photo, as proof of delivery.

He said “hello, delivery”. I was too shocked to form a cordial response and just said “erm, why are you in my house?” He said “delivery, thanks bye” and off he went.

We’ve raised a complaint with said company - but they’ve said this is a common occurrence (!) and that they will speak to the driver, but it won’t be taken any further.

i was terrified to find a stranger in my house - but having googled, this seems to be a common occurrence!!!! How?!?!?

You don't lock your doors?😮

Laiste · 25/03/2025 19:55

Yeah this is not on.

However you need to lock your door.

purpleme12 · 25/03/2025 19:55

Wow it definitely shouldn't be a common occurrence!

Breadcat24 · 25/03/2025 19:55

lock your door? say a safe place? collect from a collection point?

PronounsBaby · 25/03/2025 19:55

I'm surprised at how many people don't have Yale locks on their front door! And the fact those people don't lock their front door?!

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 25/03/2025 19:57

Yes, this is common.

I caught a delivery driver trying to open my door (he failed, it was locked).

I’ve also just installed a better back gate with locks as they let themselves into my garden via the side of the house.

No boundaries. None at all.

I ordered food items from a local produce place.. Message to driver said deliver to porch... Driver entered my home and left the food items in the hallway..
Where ddog found it and ate the lot.. Luckily she wasn't ill.
They replaced it next day free... Into the porch...
They lost £50....

DuckBee · 25/03/2025 19:58

I had this then found out that my husband actually had this in the delivery options so worth checking thst as it turns out.

NoWordForFluffy · 25/03/2025 19:59

I'd suggest that if you're terrified to find a stranger in your house, that it's better to lock the door! There's loads of opportunistic criminals who try doors to see if they can get in.

Morningsleepin · 25/03/2025 20:01

My brother lived in the Outer Hebrides for a few years and it was considered bad manners to lock your door and the postman always brought the mail in

No - we live in a village, and have done for a long time and have never had this issue.

i shouldn’t have to lock my door. Delivery drivers should not even attempt to open and trespass on private property.

Yes - our postie does the same - but even he said that this was bang out of order.

My point is that no-one should ever enter a private residence!! This is not ok.

Tell me you don’t live in London without telling me you don’t live in London 😂 I lock double lock the front door after me when I get inside and back doors are locked at all times unless I’ve got the French doors open in the summer. None of our windows open beyond an extender apart from on the second floor and even then I wouldn’t leave them open if I went out. It’s another world!

Why is it OK for the postman but not the delivery driver?

Laiste · 25/03/2025 20:16

I live in a village too - but it doesn't mean i'm happy to risk randoms marching in.

Yes, i know our Royal Mail postie by name and the village is small enough that she not only knows us all but also who's usually at who's houses on different days and brings their post there ! But there's also loads of different couriers delivering in the village and you don't know who's going to be coming onto your property. Lock your door.

Because we have given our postie permission. And he is very careful.

Why!

I don't think people with criminal intentions care very much for rules about what they shouldn't do. This time it was a delivery driver next time it might not be.

I'm guessing ok for the postie because maybe it's someone you've seen daily for x amount of years perhaps, know by name and have an understanding with. Like a neighbour.

We have different delivery drivers per courier though and they change week to week. Evri, Amazon, ect ect.

Snorlaxo · 25/03/2025 20:21

I’ve never lived in a house in England that didn’t automatically lock when you close the front door.

Admittedly I’ve never lived in a village but I can’t imagine not locking my front door even if it’s to keep the rain and wind out

We don’t have any crime in our area at all - 0%

Delivery driver aside, it’s not safe anywhere to just not lock your doors

Well no one is disputing that.

We're saying that dodgy folk exist sadly (even in villages) so lock your door.
