Delivery driver let himself into my house

Wineatfiveisfine · 25/03/2025 19:53

I WFH. A delivery driver knocked quite loudly on my door a few days ago. I got to my hallway within 10 seconds to find a very tall man in my hallway setting the delivery down on a table and taking a photo, as proof of delivery.

He said “hello, delivery”. I was too shocked to form a cordial response and just said “erm, why are you in my house?” He said “delivery, thanks bye” and off he went.

We’ve raised a complaint with said company - but they’ve said this is a common occurrence (!) and that they will speak to the driver, but it won’t be taken any further.

i was terrified to find a stranger in my house - but having googled, this seems to be a common occurrence!!!! How?!?!?

Ive had this twice, I lock the door now.

DesperateDenise · 25/03/2025 20:24

I just had an experience of somebody walking into my house this evening and it quite upset me. In my case the bathroom fitter, who I knew had to come back to do a very minor job arrived at my front door unannounced. No phonecall or prior warning he was coming today. I was sat eating, having not eaten much all day, and I was feeling extremely low due to ongoing problems, so I didn't answer the door. The front door was locked but he actually came round the back of my house and knocked on the kitchen window and then walked in the unlocked back door.
It's extremely disconcerting when people feel they have the right to just walk into your house. An invasion of privacy.

I’ve never lived in a house in England that didn’t automatically lock when you close the front door.

Admittedly I’ve never lived in a village but I can’t imagine not locking my front door even if it’s to keep the rain and wind out

2 houses i've lived in in this area had front doors you could just open and close with a handle.

3 actually! The one i'm in now!
We changed them all to yale locks asap.

Wineatfiveisfine · 25/03/2025 20:09

No - we live in a village, and have done for a long time and have never had this issue.

i shouldn’t have to lock my door. Delivery drivers should not even attempt to open and trespass on private property.

Yeah, and opportunist thieves shouldn't come into your house and nick your stuff but THEY CAN IF YOU KEEP YOUR FRONT DOOR UNLOCKED!!!

If only there was a simple, no-brainer security system that could stop this...

Thank you for the responses so far.

For those who have suggested locking my door - thank you, I’d never thought of that. 🙃

My actual issue is a deliver driver thinks it’s ok to enter a private residence as per my post.

But I’m at home - I WFH - no-one should enter your property without permission!

No one is disputing that - but try telling that to your insurance company when you are burgled. They won’t pay out if your doors are not locked !!!

Bodione · 25/03/2025 20:28

I never lock my door either when I'm door when I'm in the house, except at night. I will after reading this!

OP you sound almost childlike in your insistence that no one should enter your house without permission, of course no one should enter your home without permission but over 250,000 homes are burgled each year in the UK. Burglars don't usually seek permission and they don't smash windows or pick locks if there is an unlocked door to walk through.

You have zero crime in your area until you don't. Crime stats in my area are also low but my doors are still locked even when I'm at home.

How does a lock keep the rain out?

But you haven't thought of locking your door ...... Confused Or are determined not to?

We're all unanimous that they shouldn't walk in OP. The only answer though, if you have a courier company operating in your area which won't take any action about it, is to actually lock the door.

I feel like 'lock the door' is the new 'cancel the check' ...

PickledElectricity · 25/03/2025 20:32

OP is bringing this kind of energy.

I agree he shouldn't have come in but leaving your door unlocked is unhinged behaviour that belongs in the naïve past.

We all have access to the news and the internet and I'm shocked to hear people willingly risk their lives and property in this day and age.

Not to mention the lack of privacy with the bloody postie coming in!! What if you were in the shower, having a private phone call or shagging on the couch?!

NarnianQueen · 25/03/2025 20:33

I always find it bonkers how people will passionately defend their right to leave their doors unlocked… why? There’s literally zero downside to just locking them! (And as pp have said, insurance may be void if you leave them unlocked on principle)

SerenityNowSerenityNow · 25/03/2025 20:33

What is the point we're missing?

I think everyone at the beginning said it was wrong that they walk in. But OP has rung the company and they've said they can't/won't do anything about it.

What more can we say than - lock your door and he can't do it again ...

I'm pretty sure if you asked the local police about it they'd suggest the same. If OP stood there and said ''but i shouldn't have to'' she'd get some funny looks.

I take it thats an unpleasant dig about the back door being unlocked?
I always keep the front door locked and rarely use it. I'm in and in and out the back door multiple times during the day. It doesn't have a yale lock. I lock the door when I go upstairs. I was sat this evening in sight of the door so it shouldn't have been necessary to lock it.
Why be so sarcastic?

Well seriously OP, how else would you describe it?

"You shouldn't come in without my permission" will not defend you against being bludgeoned to death. Lock your doors FFS.

No one should. But everyone doesn't always do what they're supposed to do. I live in a very safe place, but I still lock my doors.

Tell me you don’t live in London without telling me you don’t live in London 😂 I lock double lock the front door after me when I get inside and back doors are locked at all times unless I’ve got the French doors open in the summer. None of our windows open beyond an extender apart from on the second floor and even then I wouldn’t leave them open if I went out. It’s another world!

Spot on

cantthinkofausername26 · 25/03/2025 20:41

I left my back door unlocked once and went for a nap, next thing I knew there were two men in my house trying to burgle it! Lock your doors, day and night!
