Delivery driver let himself into my house

Wineatfiveisfine · 25/03/2025 19:53

I WFH. A delivery driver knocked quite loudly on my door a few days ago. I got to my hallway within 10 seconds to find a very tall man in my hallway setting the delivery down on a table and taking a photo, as proof of delivery.

He said “hello, delivery”. I was too shocked to form a cordial response and just said “erm, why are you in my house?” He said “delivery, thanks bye” and off he went.

We’ve raised a complaint with said company - but they’ve said this is a common occurrence (!) and that they will speak to the driver, but it won’t be taken any further.

i was terrified to find a stranger in my house - but having googled, this seems to be a common occurrence!!!! How?!?!?

Honestly this is ridiculous. Just lock your front door.

I don't lock my door either. People that live in big cities probably don't quite understand it as they quite rightly have to be on high alert for opportunistic thieves etc and don't quite have the same level of community.
We can't even have door to door knockers here without an instant facebook post warning people to keep en eye out. Any "strange" people seen wandering around (probably a lost tourist to be fair) also instantly get flagged.

I don't mind delivery drivers opening the door and placing the parcel over the threshold (Evri always does this, but he's a local lad), but to actually physically enter the house is a no-no. I WFH and my dog would be straight at the door anyway, she kicks off as soon as she hears the front gate open so I presume this has provided a deterrant to the likes of Amazon from trying it. I've often just left the front door wide open for the dog to wander around and in the past completely forgotten to close the front door at all and have gone to bed! I expect I would be the first to be murdered if I lived in a city.

I smiled at your post. We are exactly the same in our village. If someone arrives to do door to door selling its immediately put up on the local fb page 🤣

pontipinemum · 25/03/2025 21:26

This happens to me as well, I will find packages just inside the door. I live on a farm and we usually leave the back door unlocked. I've had the postwoman walk into my sitting room while I was breastfeed

I've also had delivery drivers throw things through the open window. I'm not from a rural area and found it very strange to begin with!

Sassybooklover · 25/03/2025 21:27

It doesn't matter if you live in a village, town or city, it's common sense to lock your doors, regardless if you're in or not. Even in a quiet, sleepy village, crime can happen, to believe that it couldn't is naive. Of course people shouldn't walk into someone else's home, especially unannounced and without knocking. The fact that this delivery driver, did exactly that and saw no wrong in his actions, should be a warning to you that you need to lock your door. Leaving doors unlocked, regardless if you're home or not, could possibly invalidate your home insurance, if you ever were burgled. They could argue that you didn't actively secure your property and that you were negligent. Many years ago my FIL didn't lock the garage, he simply forgot - my husband's bike, that he'd had for a few short months as a birthday present was stolen. The garage is integral, so direct access from the house via a door from the kitchen, rather than a stand alone building. The insurance company didn't pay out, because he hadn't secured the property - and they were home too. Someone searched for an opportunity, found it, and took it.

@Dovetail22uk2

Astonished that some people think it's your fault for not locking your door,

So many people think it's the OP's fault that the delivery driver walked in to her house because she didn't lock her door, because it was her fault.

Not that hard to work out. Do you normally get 'astonished' so easily?

Barrenfieldoffucks · 25/03/2025 21:28

We have never locked our door, unless we are going to bed or going out. Sometimes not even for the latter, if I'm only going down the road to school. Not very unusual here.

RampantIvy · 25/03/2025 21:28

Wineatfiveisfine · 25/03/2025 20:20

But I’m at home - I WFH - no-one should enter your property without permission!

No they shouldn't, but they do. I live in a village with a low crime rate. However, I always lock my front door.

I don't think "they shouldn't come in without permission" is a valid argument when making an insurance claim.

Don't be so naive, and lock your door if you don't want unwanted visitors.

Nursingadvice · 25/03/2025 20:53

I can’t imagine not locking your door.
What is the reason why you don’t? Regardless of being in a safe village, why wouldnt you lock it? It takes a second. Why do you prefer it unlocked? Genuinely trying to understand.

To make a point?

You would be complaining if you were robbed…

Well we are talking about the delivery man with a delivery to deliver. Not a burglar.

No, he shouldn't have tried the door or come in. He couldn't have done so we're it locked, but he still didn't!

Do these people also do the whole "short skirt/rape blame" equation?

Arcticrival · 25/03/2025 21:30

ERthree · 25/03/2025 21:11

I don't even know where the key for our front door are, the car keys live in the ignition.

Same. But people who don't live out in the sticks won't understand. When I moved here from a city I couldn't believe people left their keys in vehicles and didn't lock their doors. Now I get it. Tho tbf we have a buzzer on the toad in which alerts us to anyone approaching 🤣

Astonished that some people think it's your fault for not locking your door, or no big deal. I also WFH and I'm on my own at home during the day and also disabled. But not once have I thought that I should lock my door because otherwise people can come in whenever they want. The fuck they can! Surely this is unlawful entry or similar?

Why would you put yourself at risk of violence, theft or injury? It’s common sense! If you leave your doors open you can’t be surprised that some opportunist will take advantage. Its not 1850!

I live 'out in the sticks' and never leave my keys in the car's ignition, 🙄 OR my house doors unlocked. That's just a stupid thing to do, no matter how 'safe' your area. Try getting insurance to pay out if you're robbed, or your car's nicked. You don't know if some randoms are going to come whizzing through your village/hamlet on the rob. Rural thefts are getting more and more common. Are you THAT naive?! People come from big towns and cities and target rural areas. Wake up!

Some daft posts being posted on here (by a few posters!) Seriously. FFS!

I'm sure you aren't as in the middle of nowhere as I am 🤣 people's definition of out in the sticks can differ vastly. You obviously don't live in the arse end of nowhere . Maybe just on the outskirts of a pretty village or commuter town.

And thank you for your concern we are fully aware on insurance implications.

Trust me where I live feels like 1850 at times. No mobile phone signal. No public transport. No shop for
20 miles.

Or that it couldn't have been a burglar or a rapist instead of a delivery driver.

Perhaps people think unlocked doors only open for people with innocent intentions.

AaaahBlandsHatch · 25/03/2025 21:41

As soon as I read the OP I just knew what the replies would immediately be, but even then I was shocked by the response. Over a hundred comments all banging on repeatedly about the same irrelevant point! Christ almighty this place is fucking mental sometimes.

OP hasn't asked for opinions on the rights and wrongs of locking your doors, presumably because she doesn't give a fuck about anybody's opinions on that. If she gets burgled, or finds that her insurance is invalid, or the rain gets in (?!) THAT'S HER LOOKOUT. Maybe those are stupid things to do, who cares? She's an adult and aware of those things and obviously has decided the trade off (convenience, children coming in and out, who knows?) is worth it.

What she asked was: given that the door is unlocked, is it unreasonable for someone to just come in? Which it obviously is. Would you just walk into someone's house without permission? No of course not, because it's a massively unreasonable thing to do.

Sorry you've hit a hot button topic on here OP. Of course YANBU, as you'd be told by anyone with the ability to think rather than just jump onto their favourite topic to scream about.

She hasn’t. She has said why she feels there is no risk to it being unlocked. But that doesn’t answer my question.
