Delivery driver let himself into my house

Wineatfiveisfine · 25/03/2025 19:53

I WFH. A delivery driver knocked quite loudly on my door a few days ago. I got to my hallway within 10 seconds to find a very tall man in my hallway setting the delivery down on a table and taking a photo, as proof of delivery.

He said “hello, delivery”. I was too shocked to form a cordial response and just said “erm, why are you in my house?” He said “delivery, thanks bye” and off he went.

We’ve raised a complaint with said company - but they’ve said this is a common occurrence (!) and that they will speak to the driver, but it won’t be taken any further.

i was terrified to find a stranger in my house - but having googled, this seems to be a common occurrence!!!! How?!?!?

The stupidity of some of these replies 🤦🏻‍♀️
Saying ‘you should lock your doors if you don’t want a stranger to enter’ is like saying ‘you shouldn’t wear revealing clothes if you don’t want to get raped’.

even if the door was wide open no one should be entering uninvited.

some of you really are a lost cause.

Are you OK?

Bingo. I was waiting for a variation of 'victim blaming' to enter the chat.

Not a single poster has said it's OK for people to enter a house uninvited. What we have said is that if you don't want to find a stranger, who has no regard for such conventions, in your house then you should lock your doors.

Telling a woman who is being physically abused by her partner to leave for her own safety is not the same as saying she is to blame for her partners abuse.

It's really not complicated.

Dawnb19 · 25/03/2025 21:11

I think it depends where you live. I live in the country and never lock my door and they just put the parcels in the porch to keep them dry. I'd rather them do that than leaving it out in the garden.

You don't lock your doors?😮

I don't even know where the key for our front door are, the car keys live in the ignition.

Admittedly I don't live in a village with no crime but my locked door meant I didn't have someone enter, steal my wallet and be away within seconds.

That's what happened along the street where the opportunist thief found an unlocked door. The owner was in the living-room.

Your reply is top of the list in terms of stupidity.
A door locked stops people from getting into a property unhindered. If you live rural you can add in animals to that.

I’ve never lived in a house in England that didn’t automatically lock when you close the front door.

Admittedly I’ve never lived in a village but I can’t imagine not locking my front door even if it’s to keep the rain and wind out

Lots of doors don’t lock on closing. And yes a closed door that keeps rain and wind out, locking it doesn’t make it more weather proof.

I’ll be honest and admit that I would be grateful if my delivery driver tried my door and brought stuff inside. I’m a wheelchair user and it would be very helpful.
I certainly wouldn’t complain. Perhaps they just thought they were being helpful @Wineatfiveisfine ?

LOL I think you must be here to provoke people.

Locking your door to stop uninvited people coming in is not a difficult idea to grasp but it seems that even though we can explain it to you we can't understand it for you.

BatchCookBabe · 25/03/2025 21:17

Wineatfiveisfine · 25/03/2025 20:10

🙄

Why are you rolling your eyes at this?! Lock your door FFS! Don't come on here whingeing about a delivery driver letting themselves in, and then throw your toys out of the pram when people dish out the very OBVIOUS advice to lock your bloody door!

And no area is 0% crime free.

Also, women don't build women up if they think their behaviour is ridiculous. And expecting someone to agree with you just because they also have a vagina is laughable. And calling poster vipers purely for stating the obvious to you. Get a grip! And grow up!

Growlybear83 · 25/03/2025 21:18

I don’t think the delivery man should have let himself in, but this wouldn’t have happened if you had locked your door. I’m amazed that anyone would leave their front door unlocked so thst anyone could walk in! I

pizzaHeart · 25/03/2025 21:19

But the most helpful advice in this situation is to lock your door.
The delivery driver was wrong and you rightly complained. The company’s attitude was wrong and if you felt really strongly about it, you could message them that you wouldn’t use them any more because of this. I don’t know what else to advise you about it.
However if you don’t want to find a stranger in your hall/ kitchen any more - lock your door. It’s a good advice, try it and you will see it yourself.

Bignanna · 25/03/2025 21:20

Wineatfiveisfine · 25/03/2025 20:20

But I’m at home - I WFH - no-one should enter your property without permission!

Insurance would not pay out if someone walked in and stole anything! These days you cannot leave doors and windows unlocked, wherever you live!

Arcticrival · 25/03/2025 21:21

I live in a very rural area. We only lock the doors at night. All deliveries are put inside the house. It's very normal round here. I'd ve annoyed if they left them outside and it rained.

It depends where you live. Maybe the guy just didn't want to leave the item outside and it get wet or stolen. Yabu.

Mirabai · 25/03/2025 21:21

Would you accept a stranger walking into your home, without permission?

i don’t so I have a Banham nightlatch.

Bignanna · 25/03/2025 21:22

Wineatfiveisfine · 25/03/2025 20:12

Yes - our postie does the same - but even he said that this was bang out of order.

My point is that no-one should ever enter a private residence!! This is not ok.

That’s incredibly naive!

thatduck · 25/03/2025 21:23

My postie puts the post on the kitchen table and brings my partner's to my house if he's at work!

Astonished that some people think it's your fault for not locking your door, or no big deal. I also WFH and I'm on my own at home during the day and also disabled. But not once have I thought that I should lock my door because otherwise people can come in whenever they want. The fuck they can! Surely this is unlawful entry or similar?
