Delivery driver let himself into my house

Wineatfiveisfine · 25/03/2025 19:53

I WFH. A delivery driver knocked quite loudly on my door a few days ago. I got to my hallway within 10 seconds to find a very tall man in my hallway setting the delivery down on a table and taking a photo, as proof of delivery.

He said “hello, delivery”. I was too shocked to form a cordial response and just said “erm, why are you in my house?” He said “delivery, thanks bye” and off he went.

We’ve raised a complaint with said company - but they’ve said this is a common occurrence (!) and that they will speak to the driver, but it won’t be taken any further.

i was terrified to find a stranger in my house - but having googled, this seems to be a common occurrence!!!! How?!?!?

We don’t have any crime in our area at all - 0%

Well that's obviously not true, is it? Perhaps you have zero reported crime. You appear to think the delivery driver committed a crime by entering your property, so that's some crime, to start with.

If the delivery driver didn't damage anything, or see you naked, then it's not the worst thing that's ever happened, is it? So what are you hoping to do by starting a thread about it? Call for his execution?

You have already attempted to jeaopardise the poor guy's job, by making a complaint about him because he intruded into your 0% crime village home. Isn't that enough harm to do the guy for one day?

I suppose it is well after 5pm now. No wonder emotions are high......

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 25/03/2025 20:43

You are absolutely right. Nobody should come into your home uninvited. It's bang out of order to do that.

But since they do, you have to decide whether to lock your door or not. It's not about what others should or shouldn't do, it's about what they are doing.

Tangerinenets · 25/03/2025 20:43

This is why we chose a front door that you can’t open from outside without a key. I got so pissed off with people just opening the door.

I have a door I have to manually lock...

So do i now because the HA changed it. I live in a flat Old door locked automatically when closed (couldnt open it without a key)

Laiste · 25/03/2025 20:45

This forum exists for helpful advice - women should be building women up - but some of the responses are from absolute vipers.

Advising you to lock your door IS helpful !

I'd advise a man the same.

Londonrach1 · 25/03/2025 20:46

Yabu. Why your door not locked?

ohtowinthelottery · 25/03/2025 20:46

Nowhere has zero crime OP!
If you don't want random people opening your door then, as others have pointed out, just lock it. You don't seem to want to follow that sensible piece of advice
And there's so many posts on social media about delivery drivers who just leave parcels outside and they get pinched, it's not surprising that they try and leave the parcel indoors where they can. If you look up how little these folk get paid per parcel you'll understand why they want to just drop and go.

Attempted to jeopardise his job? Are you serious?

Yes, I love rurally - a tiny village without crime.

Would you accept a stranger walking into your home, without permission?

Perhaps he'll think twice before just walking into someone's house then!

I complained when it happened to me and the delivery company sent me voucher as an apology.

In my case they didn't even bother knocking, they just walked in.

alexdgr8 · 25/03/2025 20:52

He's a delivery driver.
His job is to make deliveries.
As many as possible on each run.
And not have to waste time and effort trying again.
They will deliver to anywhere on your premises.
A porch. Through a window. Trying doors and side gates. Over a wall.
He wants to be rid of your parcel.
It is not well paid. Time is money.
You are a grown up.
You can predict what he will do.
You need to take some responsibility if you object to it.
You have the means to effect that.
Or you could stamp your feet and continue to proclaim
But he didn't ought to !

Nursingadvice · 25/03/2025 20:53

I can’t imagine not locking your door.
What is the reason why you don’t? Regardless of being in a safe village, why wouldnt you lock it? It takes a second. Why do you prefer it unlocked? Genuinely trying to understand.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 25/03/2025 20:54

I came home left the door unlocked because I ran in dropped stuff upstairs.

Returned to lock the door and found my supermarket delivery in my hall with the door wide open and the driver standing there.

He was an hour early. Thought it was ok to walk in and put the shopping inside.

I was terrified when I ran back and saw him standing there.

Yes, I should have locked the door, but I was herding children.

We also live in a village in rural part of the country and no one locks their doors. I do, apart from when I don’t hahah.

YoSuchie · 25/03/2025 20:59

@alexdgr8 My thoughts exactly. Thank you,

Ebeneser · 25/03/2025 21:00

I don't lock my door either. People that live in big cities probably don't quite understand it as they quite rightly have to be on high alert for opportunistic thieves etc and don't quite have the same level of community.
We can't even have door to door knockers here without an instant facebook post warning people to keep en eye out. Any "strange" people seen wandering around (probably a lost tourist to be fair) also instantly get flagged.

I don't mind delivery drivers opening the door and placing the parcel over the threshold (Evri always does this, but he's a local lad), but to actually physically enter the house is a no-no. I WFH and my dog would be straight at the door anyway, she kicks off as soon as she hears the front gate open so I presume this has provided a deterrant to the likes of Amazon from trying it. I've often just left the front door wide open for the dog to wander around and in the past completely forgotten to close the front door at all and have gone to bed! I expect I would be the first to be murdered if I lived in a city.

IhadaStripeyDeckchair · 25/03/2025 21:01

WTF isn't your front door locked?

The norm is for any external door to be locked unless someone is arriving or leaving the house.
The only exception is in good weather if it opens directly onto a secure garden.

I don't understand how so many people on Mumsnet never seem to lock a door, it's ridiculous

Laiste · 25/03/2025 21:03

See - another thing, i wouldn't want people opening my door in case they let my cats out.

(posh cats - they are allowed out in the back garden, before anyone says i'm evil keeping them in)

Same could be said for anyone with a dog who likes to bolt out. It's not always about burgler worry.

Marbledwhite · 25/03/2025 21:03

Of course he shouldn't have come into your house without permission. but he did. And he should have been reprimanded but apparently he wasn't.

You can either make sure that you don't buy from a company that uses this delivery company, or keep your door locked.

You shouldn't have to, but there are a lot of things we do in life to avoid being harmed or stolen from.

LivelyHare · 25/03/2025 21:04

OMG you need to shake your head and get with the real world. Lock your door! Always!

Lostatmidnight · 25/03/2025 21:04

The stupidity of some of these replies 🤦🏻‍♀️
Saying ‘you should lock your doors if you don’t want a stranger to enter’ is like saying ‘you shouldn’t wear revealing clothes if you don’t want to get raped’.

even if the door was wide open no one should be entering uninvited.

some of you really are a lost cause.

ButterCrackers · 25/03/2025 21:05

Your door wasn’t locked unless he broke in? Next time lock your door.

Your house insurance is invalid if you get burgled and you don't have door locks.

You could try arguing the toss with them using the rape analogy but i think it won't work. Because that's bloody silly 🙄

theyoungishman · 25/03/2025 21:07

Wherever you live, you are extremely foolish to not lock your doors! Lesson learnt hopefully

Lunde · 25/03/2025 21:08

Wineatfiveisfine · 25/03/2025 20:09

No - we live in a village, and have done for a long time and have never had this issue.

i shouldn’t have to lock my door. Delivery drivers should not even attempt to open and trespass on private property.

TBH I'd rethink this.

I live in a tiny farming hamlet and the kids were a bit lax about locking doors until the day that 12 year old dd found an unknown man in the kitchen - extremely drunk and ranting about someone taking his mobile (he thought he was at a different address) - she and I managed to shepherd him out but it was scary.

I'm surprised at how many people don't have Yale locks on their front door! And the fact those people don't lock their front door?!

A 5 lever mortice deadlock is significantly more secure than a Yale lock. But yes, it needs to be locked.
