Delivery driver let himself into my house

Wineatfiveisfine · 25/03/2025 19:53

I WFH. A delivery driver knocked quite loudly on my door a few days ago. I got to my hallway within 10 seconds to find a very tall man in my hallway setting the delivery down on a table and taking a photo, as proof of delivery.

He said “hello, delivery”. I was too shocked to form a cordial response and just said “erm, why are you in my house?” He said “delivery, thanks bye” and off he went.

We’ve raised a complaint with said company - but they’ve said this is a common occurrence (!) and that they will speak to the driver, but it won’t be taken any further.

i was terrified to find a stranger in my house - but having googled, this seems to be a common occurrence!!!! How?!?!?

I'm sure you aren't as in the middle of nowhere as I am 🤣 people's definition of out in the sticks can differ vastly. You obviously don't live in the arse end of nowhere . Maybe just on the outskirts of a pretty village or commuter town.

And thank you for your concern we are fully aware on insurance implications.

Wrong. I DO live in the arse end of nowhere, and you sound hilariously naive and deluded.

You seriously think you will never EVER get robbed or broken into or attacked because you live in the 'arse end of nowhere?'

Hilarious, but also terrifying. Good luck! (You will need it!)

Bignanna · 25/03/2025 21:42

Yet you still leave your doors unlocked? Unbelievable! __

I don't expect people to understand if they live in towns cities etc and I get that completely. I used to be like that. I woukd never dream of leaving my door unlocked when I lived in a town.

But it is different when you live in the middle of nowhere. In a field. At the end of a road that isn't a public road. No through traffic. It leads nowhere. The only people who end up down here are delivery drivers.

My dh who has lived here all his life never even locked at night. I drew the line at that. We lock up at 7pm or so

Let's agree to disagree. No need to be rude

Laiste · 25/03/2025 21:47

@Arcticrival i so wish it could be an actual toad.

@AaaahBlandsHatch i don't think there's been much 'screaming' ... And the thing is most of the replies agree that a delivery man shouldn't walking in, but especially because OP's already contacted the company and they aren't going to do anything about it what else is there to say except lock your door to stop it?

But OP says why should i .... ?

And we're saying to stop him (or the next weirdo) walking in.

Quit the patronising 'you are all talking shit and no-one needs to lock their doors if they live rurally' attitude then.

It's misleading nonsense!

As soon as I read the OP I just knew what the replies would immediately be, but even then I was shocked by the response. Over a hundred comments all banging on repeatedly about the same irrelevant point! Christ almighty this place is fucking mental sometimes.

OP hasn't asked for opinions on the rights and wrongs of locking your doors, presumably because she doesn't give a fuck about anybody's opinions on that. If she gets burgled, or finds that her insurance is invalid, or the rain gets in (?!) THAT'S HER LOOKOUT. Maybe those are stupid things to do, who cares? She's an adult and aware of those things and obviously has decided the trade off (convenience, children coming in and out, who knows?) is worth it.

What she asked was: given that the door is unlocked, is it unreasonable for someone to just come in? Which it obviously is. Would you just walk into someone's house without permission? No of course not, because it's a massively unreasonable thing to do.

Sorry you've hit a hot button topic on here OP. Of course YANBU, as you'd be told by anyone with the ability to think rather than just jump onto their favourite topic to scream about.

I think everyone realised the point of the post, but in this day and age It is incredible that some are still so naive and trusting as to think it’s ok to leave their property unsecured and give carte blanche to some, yet complain that others have violated their privacy!

BlondiePortz · 25/03/2025 21:49

Of course it is only city people who committ crimes, not sure logically how living in a city makes a difference of course

Am thinking how I could change the road buzzer and using toad instead 🤔 🤣

chocolatelover91 · 25/03/2025 21:50

This is why I always lock my door! I cannot stand anyone letting themselves in my house!! I don't even like it when friends or family do it, wait for me to get to the door! Common courtesy!

Not at all. Just saying we all live different lives and have different experiences.

Not misleading anyone. Just sharing my experience

Same. But people who don't live out in the sticks won't understand. When I moved here from a city I couldn't believe people left their keys in vehicles and didn't lock their doors. Now I get it. Tho tbf we have a buzzer on the toad in which alerts us to anyone approaching 🤣

My toad won't sit still long enough!!

I was brought up in a remote village 70 years ago, long before online deliveries, and we didn’t leave doors unlocked then!

NippyNinjaCrab · 25/03/2025 21:54

I've had this! I have on my door instructions to leave any parcels outside next to the door, I had unlocked our front door for my DH coming home. Amazon driver opened the front door, the internal door and our male dog nearly had him! He was very lucky! I complained and heard nothing back, it's not okay @Wineatfiveisfine and I don't give a fuck if people say lock the door! No one should think it's acceptable to come in ffs. Oh and our postie has permission to open our front door and leave parcels inside too, we also live in a village. X

Exactly! Some utterly ludicrous posts here. People claim they live rurally/in the arse end of nowhere, yet seemingly know fuck-all about rural crime and rural thefts (that are often committed by people passing through from towns and cities who target rural areas as there is wealth here, especially when it comes to livestock, farm machinery, and farm stock.)

Seriously I am struggling to believe the people saying they live rurally and still leave all their doors open, and the car keys in the ignition, because anyone who actually DOES 'live rurally' has the common sense to know the risks of doing this.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 25/03/2025 19:57

Yes, this is common.

I caught a delivery driver trying to open my door (he failed, it was locked).

I’ve also just installed a better back gate with locks as they let themselves into my garden via the side of the house.

No boundaries. None at all.

Where do they put your parcels if you're out then?

SpringIsSpringing25 · 25/03/2025 21:54

I'm going to blow a lot of minds, not only as my front door unlocked. It's usually open from very early in the morning until very late at night unless it's raining and the wind is blowing in that direction!

Oh, except I do close it if I'm going in the shower.

lactofree · 25/03/2025 21:55

Nobody should steal a car either but it doesn’t mean we leave them unlocked

Imagine those scottish crofts with no neighbours for Miles. We are a Bit like that

MoonWoman69 · 25/03/2025 21:56

Don't you have a lock?! I never ever leave my door unlocked when I'm in! I'd say it served you right and maybe you'll learn a lesson from it!

No neighbours for miles (allegedly) yet you still leave all your doors unlocked?

Unbelievable! Confused

Clearly never heard of rural crime. Funny that. Wink

He was wrong to walk in without permission.

You are entitled not to lock your front door.

But what I don’t understand is WHY you wouldn’t lock your front door, if not to allow people who don’t live in your house to walk in? I can’t see another reason why you wouldn’t just lock it??
