How much have you got left in your current account? If payday is Monday? I think I’m doing quite well with 141.36 šŸ˜…
Single parent trying hard to save more so I’m thrilled šŸ™ŒšŸ™Œ

@PickledElectricity I was thinking about how that would work on Universal Credit where you really want to avoid having two salaries in a benefit month.

Easy enough in reality as you make sure your monthly Assessment Period starts and ends early in the month.

Oh I see. Neither of us are in receipt of UC so it's never crossed my mind! Sending money into the joint account used to be a hassle but we worked out just waiting until the 1st of the month was cleanest.

roshi42 · 22/03/2025 11:28

Payday’s Monday and I’m negative Ā£200… again.

NinjaFurtive · 22/03/2025 11:31

Ā£132 until Mon eve. We'll be fine, going out for dinner tonight too. All bills paid from another account.

About £300 in savings. We're a single income family at the moment so will start saving once I go back to work later this year.

Payday 30th. About 12k in the current account

Why would you keep this in your current account? I keep my savings in a savings account? I would have to transfer it out. šŸ˜†

Payday is Tuesday. We have approx £800 in the current account and Whats left bY Monday night will move to savings.

we’re late 40s though now so much better off than the childcare years when we’d be down to the last couple of pounds.

autisticbookworm · 22/03/2025 11:45

I had Ā£22.73 n my account the day before payday. I do have an overdraft and savings if needed. Plus I tend to use my cc and pay balance in full . It’s usually due about a week after pay day.

Tiredalwaystired · 22/03/2025 11:52

About the same as you, OP. Feeling quite flush! I think it’s because of the shorter month!

whattheladybirdherd · 22/03/2025 11:53

Ā£6. Payday is Tuesday. Luckily I work Monday and both my children are in nursery, so will do the shopping on Tuesday.

AdoraBell · 22/03/2025 11:53

Only tumble weeds in my account until April.

MaleficentQueen · 22/03/2025 11:56

I literally have a few quid. I don’t get paid until Friday, but it’s SMP, so as soon as it hits, it’s gone, as it’s wiped out by my bills.

Maternity Pay is so much fun - NOT. How they expect us to live on so little, I do not know. It’s literally less than Minimum Wage.

The Child Benefit helps a bit, but once the nappies, wipes, clothes (if needed), and formula are purchased, there’s not much left, is there?

How much do you get each month? (Nosey!)

Zippidydoodah · 22/03/2025 12:06

Sunshineandrainbow · 22/03/2025 11:21

Yes you can contact your local council and they will do this. Once my daughter is out of education and we don't get single occupancy discount I will do this

I will do this. Thank you. Just makes it easier to budget!

EmeraldShamrock000 · 22/03/2025 12:09

Overdrafts are a blessing and a curse.

I don't have one as I'd use it for days when things are tight.

Missing a direct debit is a €20 euro charge

I understand how people get trapped in the overdraft cycle too.

LottieMary · 22/03/2025 12:10

Payday Friday and we have just under 350. Really pleased as we’ve made a real effort this month to have some left to save

Yes I’m the same, I’m good with money but I don’t have an overdraft or a credit card because I just don’t 100% trust myself to justify using them unfortunately.

My payday is Thursday and I have £49.08.

JudgeJ · 22/03/2025 12:15

We used to get paid in July for July and August, we ate a lot of beans in the last couple of weeks in September, especially if we had managed to go on holiday in August!

Chungai · 22/03/2025 12:15

Loveduppenguin · 22/03/2025 10:05

I couldn’t do this at all 1k left! I used to but I’m separated now and have a huge rent to pay

In -2750
CB-280
Benefits-177

Total: 3,207

Rent 1400
Electricity 120
Life insurance 40
Internet/tv/2 phones 86
Bin charge 23
Apple 20
Disney 10
DS club 25

Total 1,724
Leftover 1,483

the 1483 is for food, fuel, savings and everything else.

1483 for food, fuel and savings is pretty good TBF.

Istilldontlikeolives · 22/03/2025 12:15

But some people might have 50p in their current account and £10000 in savings so whats the point of asking?

Chungai · 22/03/2025 12:16

I have £317 BUT when I last was paid I had savings of £500, meaning I've eaten into that heavily.

I do have expenses of £100 or so to claim back.

It's been an expensive month by my standards so will need to cut back next month.

Loveduppenguin · 22/03/2025 12:16

Chungai · 22/03/2025 12:15

Yeah it’s not too bad

the 1483 goes to…
300 food
240 fuel
200 savings
50 kids clubs/school trips etc
100 treats/coffees/takeaways
100 clothes/shoes
50 birthdays/gifts
50 prescriptions/medicines
150 holidays/trips (either as a payment off a booking or as savings)
I know this essentially leaves over 243 but it gets eaten up somewhere usually and if not like this month it’s put into savings.

This is where cheques came into their own, they took 4 or 5 days to hit the account!

I don’t class those kinds savings as a part of the monthly budget though…as in to me in my head ā€œthey are not there to spend on average monthly needsā€ that’s just me. I have to separate them unless for true emergencies.
