How much have you got left in your current account? If payday is Monday? I think I’m doing quite well with 141.36 šŸ˜…

I would never let my current account drop below Ā£100 as I would be too worried about an unexpected payment going out! If I didn’t have it ā€˜left’ I would transfer it out of savings.

All my dd’s come out in the first few days after payday. This wouldn’t happen me at all.

Thank you @Loveduppenguin !

Also thank you for the thread! 😁

HappySheldon · 23/03/2025 14:25

I'm paid on the first and my dds come out on the third to fifth depending on what they are. Problem has arisen when the 1st falls on a Saturday and funds therefore go in on the Monday after dds come out automatically. That's why i have an overdraft. Insurance policy essentially!

My current account if frequently that low because everything is very finely balanced I am afraid.

Izyboo · 23/03/2025 18:12

23p, payday not for another 8 days. That's with borrowing £20 from my mum to get some food in.

Having to be very creative. Husband also stopping at his sisters to save fuel commuting 120 miles a day. Been a really tough few months since he lost his good job. I can't get any more hours and eldest isn't fully qualified till June.

Proper crap at the minute.

Single50something · 23/03/2025 18:30

Usually v little. And if payday was Monday I'd be hoping any weekend spending wouldn't hit my bank till Monday.....

Tip I founded out.
Lots of places let you use PayPal.
It takes 2 days to clear...
Uber do food lots like Iceland do half price veg on a Monday, if you stock up you save. If you invite friends they give you both money off. £12.
Then then send you lots of spend £15 get half price ECT. It actually starts to add up , I save £100 this way last month.

Does this still work really? So I could order a takeaway meal a few days before payday without enough funds in the bank and it will go through?

J3001 · 23/03/2025 19:31

is there anyone who isn’t paid monthly or is that standard now?

Both me and DH are paid weekly

Currently under £5 in our account as spare money for the week because all my other money is in pots ready to pay the bills

ColdWaterDipper · 23/03/2025 20:43

My payday isn’t until the end of the month (31st) and currently we have just under Ā£1700 in our joint (and only) account. It’s the start of 3.5 weeks of Easter hols on Friday though, and I’ll probably spend another Ā£150 in shopping and Ā£100 in diesel, plus some extra funds for DS1 who is going on another skiing holiday in a week (with school this time). It’s unusual for us to finish the month with more than Ā£1000 - mostly we have somewhere between Ā£200 and Ā£500 left.

appleofmyey · 23/03/2025 20:43

This is really refreshing, I have mum guilt to think how Ā£32 will see us by but it’s nice to see it’s not just me that struggles xx

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 23/03/2025 21:59

Minus £1700, so not great. Have been in overdraft for the last 4 months and can't even bear to check how much that's cost me.

monktasmic · 23/03/2025 23:36

more than one account - there’s Ā£100 ish in each coop account, 3.5k in my Halifax - my Monzo has Ā£400 but out of that I need ā€˜bits of shopping’, petrol, the cleaner is Ā£36 and my trainer is Ā£150 for 4 weeks. I think the family allowance of about Ā£180 is due this week into one of the coop accounts. I get paid Friday (Which is just shy of 3.5k) dp gets paid on 15th (as do I from another job which is another 4ish?!) we are v lucky -and this is a far cry from the high mortgage / one income decade because we couldn’t afford childcare and my youngest was unwell. Sorry to everyone struggling - I cannot look a fucking chickpea in the eye because we ate so many of them during the shit, skint times. Solidarity.

Loveduppenguin · 24/03/2025 10:18

2957 paid in this morning…1400 out straight away for rent 😭🤣 I love being a grown up…

My £4500 cost me £100 per month in fees. I shudder to think how much I paid in fees over the years - I was living at the top of this overdraft for years and years. Overdrafts are just about the most expensive kind of borrowing around! like 35% apr

yeah I know, right? It built up during COVID thanks to my employer running out of money essentially. It's taken me until 2024 to be in a position where I could start clearing it down. Still, it's gone now, never to return hopefully!

Well done for getting rid of it. It’s a lot of interest but I suppose it served you in a time of need and that’s important too.

Well done for getting rid, it's helpful but so expensive.

Hoping to get rid of it by June.

My payday is Tuesday and I have 3p, no petrol and hardly any food. We’ve had a tough couple of months due to our oldest DS being made redundant and me giving him nearly half of my wages to pay his rent and bills. Thankfully he starts a new job on Monday!!!

Did he not have any redundancy money and/or claim Universal Credit?

Speckyfourfries · 24/03/2025 23:43

Ā£40 and need to do a food shop, buy bus fares etc.
7 days until pay day.
Overdue bills I can't afford and can't seem to keep my head above the water at the moment, utterly depressing and demoralising when all I seem to do is work and feel tired.

No redundancy, he hadn’t been there long enough and he was only entitled to about Ā£4 a week due UC to his girlfriend’s wage! She takes home about Ā£1600 pcm and their rent is Ā£1100.

Tallyrand · 25/03/2025 07:30

£5.47 and don't get paid until the end of next week. Had to pay £600 balance of our holiday as we fly end of May, that was a tough manual payment to make.

About £35 of direct debits to come out and probably £50 of groceries that will just need to go on a credit card.

Two huge loans fall off in July that will free up £525 a month and we can start balancing budgets better and putting into savings. (and paying off a holiday in 2026 for a friend's wedding).

Plus my expenses will soon start to ramp up to about £150-200 a month once my site starts. I drive an EV and the miles will only cost me about £30 on an overnight tariff.

Feel very fortunate to be able to afford holidays but I'm dreading my wife planning our next home project because we just can't afford it right now.

JHound · 25/03/2025 07:35

In the past I would consider it good going if I had a tenner in my account at payday.

However I worked on overhauling my financial situation. Took years but now I don’t notice payday and typically have between 500 - 1000 in my current account (and that does not include what I have in savings.)

Oh, I didn't realise he lived with his GF. Am very surprised he wasn't entitled to more UC, particularly bearing in mind his housing costs. I hope he did a benefit calculator to check. At least he has got another job though.

HappySheldon · 25/03/2025 13:44

I've just had an unexpected vet bill so am now relying exclusively on my credit card until the 1st. I am lucky enough that I can put money into holiday savings (Ā£250) each month which I try my hardest not to touch so I am going to have to have a bit of a think about that.
