How much have you got left in your current account? If payday is Monday? I think I’m doing quite well with 141.36 šŸ˜…
Single parent trying hard to save more so I’m thrilled šŸ™ŒšŸ™Œ

Is there a way to divide council tax over 12 months?

Yes. I think ours is divided over 10 months. Never notice the savings on the other 2 months though.

thebear1 · 22/03/2025 12:36

£30 in personal spends, but in the 2 accounts we use for bills and general expenses about £900 between the 2. Get paid Wednesday. No council tax or water rates has helped those 2 accounts.

Loveduppenguin · 22/03/2025 12:16

Yeah it’s not too bad

the 1483 goes to…
300 food
240 fuel
200 savings
50 kids clubs/school trips etc
100 treats/coffees/takeaways
100 clothes/shoes
50 birthdays/gifts
50 prescriptions/medicines
150 holidays/trips (either as a payment off a booking or as savings)
I know this essentially leaves over 243 but it gets eaten up somewhere usually and if not like this month it’s put into savings.

What about
water and
council tax

and what’s the bin charge…I’ve never heard of that

LondonFox · 22/03/2025 12:38

30k in savinga and 300 on my debit card as I don't like keeping anything more than 500 there.

I’m in Ireland we don’t have council tax or water.

Payday isn't till Thursday and we're in our overdraft

So that’s what the bins is about then….that makes sense
Do pensioners still get free fuel, my grandad used to get brickets delivered for free. Plus free TV licence ( which we’ve lost now )

Yeah we pay for bins to private companies.

im unsure about free briquettes, but there’s probably something.

I currently have £929 left and I get paid on Tuesday.

Yes, there is a household package, it includes heating allowance 600 euro, TV licence, medical card, there is also a living alone element.

I think it is means tested, it is for carers, though our threshold is very high, they don't strip pensioners for having savings or pensions.

Nor do they take their home for care needs, we have a fair deal scheme, I think it is 8% of the property value and weekly pension, plus you can rent out the property while the person is in care, if they've a spouse at home, house isn't cashed in until they die.

We've an old politician to thank, she deserved praise for that scheme, its going 25 year.

Why would you keep this in your current account? I keep my savings in a savings account? I would have to transfer it out. šŸ˜†

I put 800 a month into savings anyway and I've some big expenses coming up over the next few months

Bogginsthe3rd · 22/03/2025 13:59

Ā£3.5k

Loveduppenguin · 22/03/2025 14:47

is there anyone who isn’t paid monthly or is that standard now?

claudiaswinklemen · 22/03/2025 15:49

Payday will be Friday I think (normally paid on penultimate day of month). £10537. This thread has given me a lot to think about.

Lots of people are not paid monthly.

This sounds good however prices on Uber eats are already inflated you aren't getting 50% off in-store prices so you're paying over the odds

It's still cheaper than in the shops whdn it's half price I've checked

tilypu · 22/03/2025 17:43

My payday is Friday and I've got £1524. Which sounds great - but this payday is going to be really rubbish so I'll need it to see me through till the end of April.

I do mine over 12 months 😊

Cornishclio · 22/03/2025 19:56

We have several different streams of income now we are retired. I tend to move money over to savings the day before and how much this is varies enormously. Average is a few hundred though.

StrongasSixpence · 22/03/2025 22:51

I have around £2k in my current account but £1,700 credit card balance (paid each month) so around £300 net I suppose. Paid on Monday and credit card DD comes out around a week after payday. We went on holiday so CC bill higher than usual as it's generally between £800-1,200 most months. I aim to keep around £1k float in my current account most of the time and transfer anything excessive into savings.

I'm very fortunate though through a combination of luck and choices. Total income is around £3,500 and household bills are around £1,100 (mortgage, utilities, insurance etc). No children. £600 goes to savings on payday and extra is saved when less spendy months result in higher current account balances.

Zippidydoodah · 23/03/2025 10:01

On the back of this thread, I’ve just reduced my overdraft facility from Ā£1000 to Ā£500! This will also help me budget, as I seem to see that overdraft as money to spend šŸ™„ I might see if I can reduce it further next month!

Toddlerteaplease · 23/03/2025 13:18

I have no overdraft and nothing on my credit card.

MidnightMeltdown · 23/03/2025 13:37

I would never let my current account drop below Ā£100 as I would be too worried about an unexpected payment going out! If I didn’t have it ā€˜left’ I would transfer it out of savings.
