Sell the story, if so to who?

I'm unsure about this but I'm on dating sites and as we all know it's full of parasites.

I was speaking to an elected councillor who I thought was decent, he sent me nudes, vulgar text etc. He swiftly deleted it but it's really wrong, I have screenshot etc. He was disgusting.

I'm not on about selling per se for money but we shouldn't have creeps like this representing us.

Why would you look for his number on a government site? Odd.

To warn the person his pics were being used, turns out it was really him.

What were the original horrible messages?

Explicitly rude and vulgar, this was not encouraged in the slightest.

Why not wait until tomorrow the papers read these forums so will probably publish your post they might even DM you and you can decide if you want to go public or name and shame him. He shouldn’t be allowed to do this he is a creep stop him doing it again.

I don't use this app much only on my phone, how do you get DMs? Can't see there is even an option.

Report it to your local council, or, to the local govt ombudsman.

Loads of lazy journos hang round on these pages though

Actually, these “lazy journalists” like me (!) wouldn’t be able to publish a story unless there’s been a conviction, or a charge at the very least. Otherwise we’d get done for defamation.

HausofHolbein · 19/03/2025 20:23

And people wonder why the conviction rate for sexual offences is so low...

As a former councillor I can assure you it really isn't that uncommon - I'm assuming op means the local council website which will have a gov.uk suffix. Phone numbers will also be on calling cards and election material. We weren't given mobiles by the council so the choice was give out your own number or the town hall could be used and messages passed on. I didn't have mine on the council website but most of my colleagues did.

I know that councillors' contact details are on the local council website, ours is broken down by wards and gives surgery details, email and phone contact and this is as it should be. I assumed that the OP meant a central govt website, hence my querying it

Bleeky · 19/03/2025 20:40

100% nothing wrong with taking the money and buying whatever you want.

I’m not sure about the app but logging in to a iPad might show you the option the notifications on the right hand side it says private message. the paper might not be able to mention he’s a councillor but they can say op messaging a guy received inappropriate pictures should she report him or something like that.

Papergirl1968 · 19/03/2025 21:28

I was a journalist many years ago.
Only local and maybe regional papers would be interested and they don’t have the budget to pay.
They could name him if they were confident it was him - it’s extremely expensive to bring a case for libel and if the allegations can be proved he would have no chance of succeeding.
Most likely thing that would happen if you went public is that he might be thrown out of the party and therefore have to continue as an independent councillor, and might well lose his seat at the next election. Of course, if he’s in a relationship that could break down too.
It’s disgraceful behaviour but not sure if it’s actually illegal.

LittleCharlotte · 19/03/2025 21:51

It is illegal, yeesh! How many times does it need repeating?

Hope you're ok OP. I'd go to the council first rather than the papers.

cupsandcupsoftea · 19/03/2025 22:00

I also don't understand the posts telling me in awful etc. I'm okay but if I was a more vulnerable woman I would look up to this person and could possibly be 'groomed'. I'm an adult but God knows who he does this too and people tend to trust people in power.

He’s a local councillor … the most power he has got is deciding what days your bins are collected on.

Also, check out “revenge porn” laws if you are thinking of sharing intimate images

Not true at all! Depending on whether he is part of the party in power, he could even be council leader. Where I am, that means he directly makes decisions that affect 300,000 people. Locala councillors can have a lot more direct power than MPs.

OP, elected representatives should not be behaving like that and it's brought down more than a few. If you're really sure that your own conduct will stand up to scrutiny-because you will be scrutinized also-then go for it. Just consider what could happen before you do.

That's a big leap - from grubby nudes to sexual offences !

TimeConsuming · 19/03/2025 22:12

You’d hope but in Norfolk a Green councillor yelled at women holding a vigil for the women of Afghanistan and the council investigated and said as the councillor wasn’t on official business at the time, there’s no standard they have to adhere to.

sending explicit images are an issue and you can report it.

You really need to walk away from this OP. You didn't contact him in a professional capacity. Nor did he use his position to influence you. He's overstepped the mark in a personal dating website situation. That doesn't make him a potential sex offender, not does it give you the right to create a public problem for him professionally. And then maybe you should stay off dating websites.

Just in case you've missed the numerous mentions: he has committed an offence.

Just ignore them. As someone else said earlier they appear to be men - who want to be able to send unsolicited dick pics to women I suppose!

Not when you've got people telling the OP she's brought it on herself, he's not doing anything wrong and she has no right to report him for anything. Like you are.

Papergirl1968 · 19/03/2025 22:24

Ah, apparently it’s called cyber flashing and has only fairly recently become an offence punishable by up to two years in jail.
