To be upset that fellow holiday goer told me I'm too old for my hair?

I'm rising 60 and have been obese all my life, have just got it under control, gone on a glow up and have decided to Fuuckit and I've headed off on my holiday of a lifetime.

I've spent most of today with another solo traveller and quite enjoyed her company, but am fully aware she's from a more forthright culture than me. (A close friend from home is also this nationality so I'm fully aware of this conversational style).

As we parted company she said that she felt she had to tell me that at my age I should be considering getting my hair cut to a more age appropriate length.

I fricking love my hair, my hairdresser has been with me through literal thick and thin, and had particularly encouraged me nurturing my length after The Bad Bad Bob Incident of October 23.

Low self confidence and self esteem through being morbidly obese for 30 years doesn't lend itself to resilience, so I'm now in my room trying to distract myself and win the day back to no avail.

Aibu to be upset or am I a soft numpty?

Well, a neighbour of mine who is from a certain Eastern European country is of this conversational style. I have found that I now give as good as I get. Funnily enough, she bites her tongue more with me than with others. Luckily, I´m only half English, so can call a spade a spade if necessary.

I get told I should grow my hair longer as it’s unfeminine. It’s true I have been mistaken for a man a couple of times. But my hair is thinning and rubbish condition due to autoimmune issues and peri, so I keep it shorter. It’s also easier to manage.

I meant for op to ignore the comments BTW.

I know - didn't realise I quoted you until after it posted...I'm such a dimwit sometimes x

Sounds like a jealousy to me, I have just done similar to you shed the weight, hair coloured ,fillers, (first time! and only in one place) felt fab for first time in 20 years. Sometimes I did think maybe my costume jewellery was a bit OTT, but what the….. ! It is having the confidence to pull it off, and if you are happy with your hair it no one’s business! I am 8 years older than you, and I am wasting no more time, if you like it go for it!

I had my highlights done yesterday and a friend said those are out now nobody has highlights. What?? I’ve had them for 20 years and still see countless women either lovely fresh blonde hair.

People love a put down.

What bollocks, my 21yr old has highlights, a full head, very blond, as does my friends 14 yr old.

I'm 100% Dutch and comfortable being 'racist' about my own people 😘

Je moederrrr

Yes me too. As I’m half English and half Dutch but brought up in Holland until my teens. Now married and live in Britain I swing between the two nations. But im proud to be half Dutch and what they stand for even they are meant to abrupt according to some people but at least we are honest. 😘

YANBU. I can remember feeling very hurt and quite angry when my late FIL told me, in a room full of people, that I should get my hair cut as it wasn't seemly for a woman of my age to have hair past her shoulders. I was 42 at the time. Well guess what? I'm 74 now and my hair is half way down my back. I still get a little frisson of pleasure every time I catch sight of myself in the mirror and imagine him spinning in his grave! How unnecessarily rude of your travel companion to pass any comment on your appearance - tell her to go fuck herself!

teagirl27 · 20/03/2025 22:32

I haven't RTFT but years ago (I was probably early 40s,) the manager of my salon told me I would need to get my hair cut short soon as older ladies can't have long hair. She always had short, neatly coiffeurred bobs. Now that she's left her husband, she's grown her own hair out and it looks fabulous. I have retained my long hair throughout. Don't listen to the old fashioned views!

Rottweilermummy · 21/03/2025 11:31

YANBU, to be upset, but don't let it ruin your holiday, you have overcome so much She is probably jealous and I wonder If she would tell Princess Anne the same thing about her hair,🤔 be proud!

Ask her if she’s thought about doing anything to cover up her massive nose she keeps sticking in other people’s business.

this is fantastic

softrainsofapril · 22/03/2025 18:40

Where does she get off commenting on your hair?! Avoid her and you probably look fabulous! Not even a close friend or relative should say such things! You get out of your room and own the hair you love! It’s all subjective anyway - one persons stupid opinion should not ruin your glow x

IamMoodyBlue · 22/03/2025 20:45

I'm long haired, gping grey amd won't be dying my hair. I'll cut it shorter if I want to, but probably won't. I'm sure there are people who don't like my hair and I know there are those who do. I don't control their thoughts, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
So, don't get too hung up on someone's comments about your appearance, or anything else for that matter.
You'll never get a roomful of people who all agree!
Look in the mirror. Do you like your hair?
Yes?
Problem solved!

Tanjamaltija · 23/03/2025 10:06

'Thank you for your feedback, but I like it, and that's what matters.'

WhereIsMyJumper · 23/03/2025 10:14

I really like you OP. Of course you’re not too old for your hair, that’s ridiculous.

Mrsmre · 23/03/2025 15:51

Pimlicopolly · 26/03/2025 09:33

No you are soft and who made her the judge ? Ignore and enjoy . You dont need to be everyone’s cup of tea you just need to please yourself x
