Anyone watched the Gabby Petito documentary

So disclaimer first… I have only watched the first episode. Not worried about spoilers because obviously we all know how the story ends. The story is told from the perspective of people in Gabbys life, her friends and her family.

Whilst it is evident given what happened that Brian is guilty of what he did. Did anyone notice how often Gabby clicked her tongue or rolled her eyes at him in annoyance.

This is not just about him snapping in the moment. He took her wallet and ID so she couldn't see her friend. He encouraged her not to work and shamed her for doing so. This is long term and deliberate behavior.

I understand your point about trying to teach young people about healthy relationships, but once you've done the basics there's only so much you can do. Obviously either could have walked away, they didn't have rent or kids. He was with her by choice.

Absolutely. And then you spend their young adult years wondering if you’ve done the basics right and trust their judgement to know when their boundaries have been crossed.

Not really. I was too busy following the narrative about how he murdered her and his ever-loving parents tried to help him get away with it.

Thank you.
This, exactly.

The way the Laundrie family behaved was appalling.

This thread is so distasteful and perpetuates the common DV myths. That the woman did something to deserve getting murdered and no matter how much you and other posters say 'oh no, it's awful that he murdered her', you are somehow making her murder her fault

Totally agree

The OP putting 'an awful tragedy' at the bottom of each of her posts that are victim blaming doesn't wash.

My dd values our opinion and she has been raised to value our advice on the basis that we care for her

I imagine every Mother on here could say the same. That doesn't mean they always listen to you. Make the most of it OP while she does.

Well indeed, I seemingly valued my parents advice but they were suffocating. When I left home I was actually more open to abuse as I finally felt free.

Makes me reflect back on a relationship when I was young and we just had this intensity of love and anguish. So many points in my own relationship where the scales could have tipped into something so much more. I hit him and whilst he never hit me I think the craziness could easily have pushed him over the edge. Luckily it fizzled out.

Fuck me. Gabby was being abused for months. She didn’t push him over the edge.

Worriedsickmostofthetime · 16/03/2025 12:24

Just watched further on and she does hit him. So a bit more than tutting and rolling eyes.

if only they had the presence of mind (or wisdom of age) to see what they were doing to each other. So sad.

Are you taking the piss? He’s hitting her.

knephew · 16/03/2025 15:04

Op what on earth would possess you to watch a story about a brutal murder of a young girl and then decide you should definitely start a thread stating that she’s a bit to blame as she rolled her eyes at him. It’s sad to read you have daughters. You need to do better for them. Much better.

She admits to hitting him! I have never said he didn’t hit her. I am simply saying that this seemed to be a toxic young relationship from all aspects.

You other posters must have some personal relationship with Gabby or have watched another documentary to have been present at all points in their relationship to know for a fact that she never hit him or he always hit her first. The story is told by her family and friends. Me saying that you cannot know the absolute facts does not defend his ultimate act of murder, it is me saying that you do not know anything for sure!

I am simply saying that there are two dead kids here. One has despicable parents and the other has a mother seemingly very chilled at the state she knew her daughter to be in.

Agree. If you felt you really wanted to talk about the murder, wouldn't you wait until you had seen all the episodes.
This thread is odd

BustingBaoBun · 16/03/2025 15:09

OP. Your posts are getting worse and worse.

And no, nobody on here has any relationship with the poor murdered woman. Are you a friend of the Laundries?

OP you seem very ignorant to DV and how it works. Two dead kids (well no, they were young adults), yes one murdered the other and then killed himself.

At least admit you think she deserved it a little bit, her behaviour made him snap, because men would never just murder a woman for no reason would they?

She is very clearly taking the blame because she has been conditioned to do so. The reason they were pulled over is because he was seen hitting Gabby and reported to the police.

You’ve had this explained to you several times. Are you stupid or are you on a wind up?

Vincenoirsrootboost · 16/03/2025 15:17

Only scanned the thread but I actually think there’s a valuable conversation here.
There is a perception that a victim of domestic abuse wouldn’t dare to tut, roll eyes or be anything but ‘obedient’. In reality, speaking from experience, from an abusive relationship when I was very young, I did tut, roll eyes, mock him - it was part of my lying to myself that it’s ’just the way we are’ or ‘our love language’ as I was reciprocating some of the treatment I was receiving in an attempt to downplay it’s significance. Of course, it was received differently by my abuser and abuse always escalated afterwards.

I don’t think ops intent was to victim blame but to start a conversation about how the potential signs and changes in behaviour of someone suffering an abusive relationship might not be what is generally expected.

Audiprettier · 16/03/2025 15:18

Potsofpetals · 16/03/2025 12:19

I’ve watched it all and then some.

I think Gabby was a highly strung individual who pushed and pushed at people. She suffered with OCD and appeared to be hard work.

It is no excuse for what Brian did but I do think it was a spur of the moment thing that happened. I don’t think he ever had any intent to kill her when they set out that day.

I agree! She seemed quite a perfectionist & I noticed how she got impatient with just 'him' & saying he was useless at this & that.
Not healthy to spend 24/7 with one person!
However no reason on earth in my mind to do what he did!

Megifer · 16/03/2025 15:19

I'm almost certain that's what op will now say. In 5....4.....3.....2.....

I agree with this.

She was physically and emotionally abusive towards him.

I think it was a very volatile and abusive relationship and both were as bad as each other.

People are calling for the police woman to be sacked for not arresting him but he has the one who had bruises and cuts on him and so there was no way she could have arrested him and not her.

The police did the right thing by separating them and Gabby chose to go back to him.
The police cannot stop someone being in a relationship.

Op, imagine if this poor girl was your daughter. And then imagine reading this thread. And feel ashamed of yourself

You being abusive in your past has nothing to do with this. I’ve had positive relationships and negative ones, I’ve never hit or been hit.

Dont try to victim blame her. I watched it and didn’t notice loads of clicking or eye rolling, although it would be common if someone is being controlling towards you.

I could click a million times today and my husband still wouldn’t hit me, let alone kill me.

The only acceptable reaction, if finding yourself in an unhappy relationship is to leave it or get therapy. Killing or hurting a partner is never ever excused.

Cucy · 16/03/2025 15:54

I disagree that her parents should have done more.

She wanted to be in a relationship and you can’t physically remove someone if that’s what they choose.

My friends DD is in an abusive relationship and my friend is losing her mind because he will end up killing her and there’s nothing she can do about it.

I should have RTFT.

You can’t ’not defend the murder’ but defend the abuse that preceded it. It’s part of the same issue.

He killed her. How can they both be as bad as each other? He literally murdered her?

ImNotIroningThat · 16/03/2025 16:03

I love that he/she is not “worried about spoilers” like the brutal murder of a loved and cherished daughter is a thriller for her entertainment.
