Anyone watched the Gabby Petito documentary

So disclaimer first… I have only watched the first episode. Not worried about spoilers because obviously we all know how the story ends. The story is told from the perspective of people in Gabbys life, her friends and her family.

Whilst it is evident given what happened that Brian is guilty of what he did. Did anyone notice how often Gabby clicked her tongue or rolled her eyes at him in annoyance.

Ah..... so she was asking for it?

Nice try OP.

No woman deserves to be murdered.

I'd suggest you take your men's rights activism elsewhere.

They were absolutely correct.

Picture the scene: someone watches a docu series about a young woman who is murdered by her boyfriend on a road trip. Boyfriend then hides the body, comes home to his stonewalling parents who immediately lawyer up in an attempt to defeat justice, causing further anguish to the victim’s family.

Murderer’s mother writes “burn after reading” letters to her son, telling him how she’d help him conceal a body. Eventually murderer goes missing, kills himself and is eaten by a crocodile. His ghastly parents then quickly locate what was left of him in a remote location, something law enforcement was unable to do.

1 episode in, person watching this whole clusterfuck unfold decides the REALLY compelling aspect of this story is that the victim rolled her eyes at her soon-to-be murderer and thinks starting a thread about it on a website predominantly aimed at women and mothers would be a good idea.

Imagine this. Mother in tears because son commits suicide because he is in an abusive relationship, gets hit by his girlfriend and the police do nothing. Turns out he has been living for years under her scorn.

it wouldn’t make the news.

He killed her and he should have survived to see his punishment for that. His parents are guilty of perverting the course of justice and it’s ridiculous that they have gotten away with trying to cover up for him.

News headline: Man sentenced to 20 years for brutal murder of his partner.

Rando on MN: But did you see the side-eye she gave him and the fact she didn’t pour gravy over his roast tatties?

Stop trying to downplay male violence OP and all the other menz apologists on this thread. We see you you melts.

Maybe he had that condition where certain noises set him off, so the faint sound of a clicking tongue was literally painful and he didn't know how to use words, and he had lost the use of his legs so couldn't just leave her tormenting ways?

Makes me reflect back on a relationship when I was young and we just had this intensity of love and anguish. So many points in my own relationship where the scales could have tipped into something so much more. I hit him and whilst he never hit me I think the craziness could easily have pushed him over the edge. Luckily it fizzled out.

"the craziness"
You hit your partner. Don't romanticise domestic violence.
So did your partner roll their eyes at you? Are you trying to say that justifies violence?

Butchyrestingface · 16/03/2025 14:29

The Laundries were invited to participate in the series and give their version of events and they declined. Right enough, the mother does seem to prefer the medium of parchment and quill. They’ve been carping on since about how “one sided” the series was but that’s surely down to them since they declined the opportunity to give their side.

As for, “it wouldn’t make the news”, I recommend you now go watch the Netflix two-parter ‘My wife: my abuser’.

Nope. We were 18 19 at the time. Intoxicated with teenage love and codependency. We didn’t know any better. We provoked each other and looking back now I am so glad it ended when it did as it allowed me to know what was a good relationship and what was a bad one. I am luckily married to a very lovely man and we have a relationship that I am proud of.

19 year old me wouldn’t have believed it was possible.

How do all you people know whether he hit her first?

I have not at all victim blamed here. I’ve simply stated the tragedy of a young relationship between two apparently complicated individuals. Her parents should have done something! Nobody here can say any different unless you knew her personally. The story is told by her family and friends.

Because someone called the police, it's in the documentary. Someone called the police to say they had witnessed him hitting her.

This thread is so distasteful and perpetuates the common DV myths. That the woman did something to deserve getting murdered and no matter how much you and other posters say 'oh no, it's awful that he murdered her', you are somehow making her murder her fault.

Ah someone once told me on here to expect the worst from MN on a Sunday. Welcome.

You are indeed “the worst” OP. As for your belief that your interference in your dc’s relationships will prevent them being a victim like Gabi, good luck with that. You’re in for a world of pain if you honestly think you can steer your adult dc’s love lives in perpetuity.

TinyGingerCat · 16/03/2025 14:35

What is the point you actually want to make OP? You've watched one episode of a documentary about a woman who was subjected to domestic violence and then murdered by her partner, who then lied and colluded with his parents to cover it up, before killing himself. So what if she rolled her eyes and tutted at him. He hit her, which i think is probably far worse than an eye roll but she didn't kill him. You are not engaging in intelligent debate you are looking for reasons why the victim might have brought her awful demise on herself. The smart conversion here would be why she felt she couldn't leave when he hit her, why the police didn't pick up she was the victim and why Brian's parents helped him cover it up.

My daughter is currently in a relationship that I am concerned about. So thanks for that!

What happens when she refuses to leave him because she loves him and gets caught in the DV cycle? She cuts you off for interfering- would it be her fault if he eventually snaps because she rolled her eyes or tutted at him?

We all “watch for signs”, you’re not special OP. The fact is if your dd wants to continue the relationship, she will, regardless of your concerns and interference. If anything your insistence on thinking you can steer her away from someone you don’t approve of will probably make them more attractive to her.

The person who rang the Police said a man was slapping/hitting a woman in a van.

Lavenderandbrown · 16/03/2025 14:42

You can watch for signs op and you can use this high profile murder to talk with your dc and express what you would want them to do. I spoke with my dd about this case as it was unraveling in the news. I have posted this before. Gabby was one phone call away/one flight away from safety. That is the message I told my dd. I am always here for you and I can afford /can orchestrate your safety under any conditions. I haven’t watched the doc but I have wondered did Gabbys parents like Brian? His parents? Becuse she was living with them in Florida prior to van living. Do the Petitos discuss Brian’s parents at all?

Gabi had expressed concern that Brian’s mum didn’t seem to like her very much, it bothered her a lot. The minute they knew she was missing, Gabis parents contacted the Laundries for help and information, Mrs Laundrie blocked Gabis mum almost immediately. They wanted to protect their scummy son at all costs.

Yes.

One of the first things dh and I said to each other is that he clearly did not want to be on camera but still got it shoved in his face (with take after take) with her rolling her eyes and tutting at him. In several of the videos, if you had to guess and pick out who was abusive and who was 'putting up with it', i'd honestly have said her. Generally she seemed high maintenance, hard work and tbph not the nicest of people.

Please no one come at me about 'victim blaming'. Obviously I'm not saying she deserved to get battered or murdered 🙄

It's just a bit...disconcerting...when you realise how much of a certain 'swing' shows like this can put on things. Clearly the aim was to present her as a lovely, sweet, mild-mannered young girl who didn't say boo to a goose and I suspect that really wasn't the case in reality.

I knew she'd been murdered but before watching didn't know how it ended for him. I was gutted when he died. Bloody frustrating that he never had to face a trial and decades inside.

How his parents are not in fucking jail will forever baffle me. And I'm 100% convinced they knew he was dead and exactly where he was.

You can be an imperfect person without being abusive. She was obviously irritated by him, she was trying to make money for them which is more than can be said for him and he was trying to make things awkward for her. Also the 911 call said they'd seen him slapping her, that's really the only eye witness there is to their relationship and it showed him hurting her. I really don't think she was the abusive one.

Thank you for the debate which doesn’t attack me.

I too have discussed with my dd that any relationship that brings out the worst in either of you is just not worth being in. We try really hard to model a healthy relationship so she knows what the standard should be. And we do the same for our ds.

It would seem that her parents didn’t have say in what she was doing or where she was living. My dd values our opinion and she has been raised to value our advice on the basis that we care for her. Gabbys mother knew that Brian’s mother didn’t care for her, she did initially but that seemed to change.

Such an awful tragedy.

This is not just about him snapping in the moment. He took her wallet and ID so she couldn't see her friend. He encouraged her not to work and shamed her for doing so. This is long term and deliberate behavior.

I understand your point about trying to teach young people about healthy relationships, but once you've done the basics there's only so much you can do. Obviously either could have walked away, they didn't have rent or kids. He was with her by choice.

I also think the problem is that this things happen so subtly and the abuser is not always abusive, when I was with my ex it was only at the point where he was regularly hurting me that I turned round and thought "how the hell did I get here?" It's so insidious and slow that you genuinely don't notice it's happening. And quite often by the time you have realised you're in an abusive relationship it is very hard to get out of it for many reasons, including the worry that the violence will escalate.

Totally agree

The OP putting 'an awful tragedy' at the bottom of each of her posts that are victim blaming doesn't wash.

My dd values our opinion and she has been raised to value our advice on the basis that we care for her

I imagine every Mother on here could say the same. That doesn't mean they always listen to you. Make the most of it OP while she does.

This is a good point. The videos were part of the plan from the start, he knew that. It's another attempt of trying to stop her working and not working himself.
