To be embarrassed my colleague announced my coat size to whole office

Bit embarrassing … or am I being over sensitive?

OP posts:
Hoplolly · 15/03/2025 15:20

Oversensitive, it's just a number, and unless they are blind, surely they'd have a good idea what size you are anyway?

ZekeZeke · 15/03/2025 15:21

Well what exactly did they say?

DingDingRound3 · 15/03/2025 15:21

Was it done to be mean?

SherlockHomies · 15/03/2025 15:22

Hard to say really.

I wouldn't give a shite but maybe some others would?

To be fair, you could've written your OP on the back of a fag packet so maybe a bit of context might help?

DejaMooo · 15/03/2025 15:22

I think it depends on the context. Was it in a sneery way?

BrownPapery · 15/03/2025 15:23

Oversensitive (I’m assuming it was something like “whose coat is this? Jigsaw, size 16?” Not “omg did you know howemb’s coat is a size x?”

Sizes aren’t emotionally laden for some people. They’re just numbers.

Exactly. Whether you're a size 8, 16 or 24, if people are able to see you then they can see what size/shape you are!

Notonthestairs · 15/03/2025 15:25

Why would anyone need to call out the size?

If you needed to check who the coat belonged to surely you’d just describe the colour, fabric & style?

LittleMissLateForWorkAgain · 15/03/2025 15:26

Just can't imagine how that conversation even goes.
I ve never moved a colleague s coat or peered at it and felt the need to announce "omg you take a size 22" or "size 4 God you're skinny".

How was it said?

B1indEye · 15/03/2025 15:27

It might be part of a uniform where size is the only differentiator but we can make up outlr own scenarios while we wait for more info 😁

Buttonknot · 15/03/2025 15:28

I would feel embarrassed too OP.

Bailamosse · 15/03/2025 15:28

People have eyes, so Yabu.

ALunchbox · 15/03/2025 15:30

Dépends on the context and how it was said.
'whose coat is it? Black m&s size x' Vs 'i can't believe you are a size X'

Well who knows, apart from the OP who couldn't be arsed to tell us 😬🤣

EddyF · 15/03/2025 15:33

There should be a rule that all context of a situation is put on the first post. Sick of threads you have to hang around to find out what the situation was. It happens here all the time.

JillAndJenTheFlowerpotMen · 15/03/2025 15:34

YABU. Because colleagues can see your size anyway. If you’re obese they’re hardly going to be shocked if you’re a size 22, if you’re skinny they won’t bad an eyelid if you’re an 8, and if you’re somewhere in between then they really care a lot less than you think.

Other people don’t think about you as much as you think about you. I’d move on, and if you’re embarrassed by your size, that’s a you problem.

I'm convinced they do it just to up the post count.

Ridiculous really.

Snorlaxo · 15/03/2025 15:35

Whether she called out age 12 or size 20, does it matter ?

RitaFromThePitCanteen · 15/03/2025 15:39

I would find it a weird thing to do.

TotallyForgettableForNow · 15/03/2025 15:42

Personally, I would think a person doing that was a bit of a twat.
I am a size 20/22, yes people have eyes but sometimes I try and delude myself that 'I carry it well' so I might look like a size 18🤣
I assume the OP is on the larger side as I can't imagine any sizes 8-10 would be mortified if someone mentioned their coat size.

OldCottageGreenhouse · 15/03/2025 15:53

Gobsmacked at these responses, I’d be furious! There’s no way of knowing for sure what somebody’s size is from looking at them, that’s nonsense! I know a tall and very thin woman who is a size 14 because she has an unusually large pelvis which isn’t visible from looking at her.

OP, I’d be putting in a complaint. People can roll their eyes all they like but this is that sort of low-level bullying that goes under the radar as it’s small enough on it’s own to look petty to others if you say anything, but actually it’s cumulative and is, in reality, insidious when it’s an ongoing pattern. I’ve been there.

I had a manager who did this shit. Lots & lots of little things, daily, which were never big enough alone for me to look anything other than a daft cow for complaining about it. Had me dreading work in end. I never got him disciplined but wish I had from the start, regardless of how ‘ridiculous’ some thought I was being.

You haven’t said whether this is part of a pattern of behaviour from them but if it is, please nip it in the bud.

CorvusNoir · 15/03/2025 15:55

Why would anyone do this? Context is definitely needed.

Was it done in a way that was intended to provoke, upset or demean you? Or in a 'whose coat is this - Hobbs size 16 ? " enquiring way ?

It's about the intention behind the statement - and we have no idea what that was.

JLou08 · 15/03/2025 15:55

Depends how it was done. If 2 people have the same coat and she was saying this one is size x to help determine who's it is then there's nothing wrong with that. Announcing to the office so and so is size x, unnecessary and probably done with the intent to embarrass you.

Bluenotgreen · 15/03/2025 15:58

Impossible to say without all the details.

SemperIdem · 15/03/2025 15:59

It seems likely it was an unnecessary thing to do. Even if there were two very similar coats together, it would be more usual to say “the coat from x?” to differentiate rather than the size.
