New boyfriend won't dine out. Ever.

I've started seeing someone. He told me yesterday that he doesn't like dining out. Ever.

He would rather I cook or he cooks and if the relationship continues will apparently never go out for brunch or lunch or dinner with me.

I could of course dine out with friends without him. He would not come for example to any meal with friends he was invited to.

His reason is he is vegan and he says he doesn't trust chefs not to contaminate his food.

I honestly feel like saying I cannot see this relationship going anywhere.

Oh god. Fussy eaters are the worst. Dump him!

CostcoBuns · 12/03/2025 22:45

Throw this one back.

cestlavielife · 12/03/2025 22:45

You will have great holidays won't you? (Not)
Move on. Bye bye

Waterlilysunset · 12/03/2025 22:46

Sounds miserable.

Iamallowedtodisagreewithyou · 12/03/2025 22:46

That on its own wouldn't bother me toooo much. You can have non eating dates!

angelspike · 12/03/2025 22:46

That's one to bin then

Viviennemary · 12/03/2025 22:46

Goodbye and next please.

Mumblechum0 · 12/03/2025 22:46

That on its own wouldn't bother me toooo much. You can have non eating dates!

But you could never go on a day out and grab food or a holiday or a takeaway or... anything like that
Packed lunches only

Suzuki76 · 12/03/2025 22:47

Nope. Is he going to want to bring a doggy bag to family weddings? Cringe.

I haven't even thought about holidays!! He did say once that he would never go on a beach holiday. I don't think he's been on holiday for 6 years actually. He also doesn't like going to the cinema as he doesn't like sitting still for long periods.

Dump!

snowflakelake · 12/03/2025 22:48

It wouldn't work for me.
If he only ever eats homemade food then travel is out, a lot of socializing, traveling for work, visiting friends and family.
It seems very restrictive and a possible warning sign of significant mental health issues. Does he actually live like this.

WhatDidIComeInThisRoomFor · 12/03/2025 22:48

Erm what? Does he never go more than 2 hours from home or always pack a full day’s worth of food if he has to go further? No holidays, nights away?

I guess you could go away if you camp always, everywhere. Sounds miserable and limiting though.

dottiedodah · 12/03/2025 22:48

So no holidays, lunches out,bbq or street food then?are you vegan too? Sounds a bit excessive. My friend is vegan we are eating out tomorrow for lunch together! Lifes too short and all that

ValentinesGranny · 12/03/2025 22:49

Think of how many of life's celebrations he'll be missing from. Does he make up for it with regular days/nights out? If not, I'd suspect be was jusr tight with money and would get rid.

Edited to add, I can't eat due to a life limiting condition (fed via a jtube), but I never miss a meal out. I'll ring in advance and pay a cover charge if necessary. I refuse to miss out on those times with DH, friends and family.

TooFancyNancy · 12/03/2025 22:49

I get having a preference, but surely that’s just miserable and not feasible in all situations in life?
Surely you just suck it up sometimes for the sake of socialising, or celebrating with family etc.
it’s a very cut and dry stance to have with no wriggle room.

will he never go to a wedding, go on holiday?

Ablondiebutagoody · 12/03/2025 22:49

You had me at vegan. Dump. Boring fucker

MiddleAgedDread · 12/03/2025 22:49

Oh gawd, nothing sucks the enjoyment out of food like a vegan!! If you enjoy food and eating out then put this one in the compost bin.

Beautifulbouquet · 12/03/2025 22:49

Suzuki76 · 12/03/2025 22:47

Nope. Is he going to want to bring a doggy bag to family weddings? Cringe.

We stayed in a hotel for a night. He brought some bread and a packet of tofu and ate that for dinner (yes a cold tofu sandwich). At breakfast he said he wasn't hungry. Only yesterday he said that actually he never eats out.

I dated someone like this, he was paranoid about his food as he was an athlete. I did really like him so I tried but it was a nightmare and I ended up getting so frustrated that I broke it off.

My advice is to back off. It will become a huge issue, not just the unwillingness to eat out anywhere but the paranoia will irritate you as well.

DoYouReally · 12/03/2025 22:50

Won't go to events with you so, weddings etc.

The biggest consideration I think is if you intend to have children with this guy...imagine the food issues they will end up with. That would bother me the most.

TomatoSandwiches · 12/03/2025 22:50

He sounds very.... rigid op, people tend to get more set in their ways as they get older so it will only get worse and more restrictive.

ZorbaTheHoarder · 12/03/2025 22:51

Holy (vegan) mackerel!
