Mark Carney taking on Trump

RedHot2025 · 10/03/2025 16:03

Fighting talk from Mark Carney today. He will win the trade war with America. Blames Trump entirely for this trade war.

He will apply from today 25% surcharge on energy to the 3 US states they supply. Means around 100 dollars per month per family in those states.

Trump is a buffoon as well as a bully and people will not tolerate his actions.

Does Trump have dementia?

Or is he thick as shite?

YABU he's just thick

YANBU he has dementia

Carney was a poor BoE Governor. All his ‘forward guidance’ nonsense caused so much confusion - remember the ‘unreliable boyfriend’ headlines? I was quite pleased when he went back to Canada.

We’d have been even more fucked over Brexit without him.

@GasPanic the EU and Canada already have a free trade agreement (CETA) in place and the French agriculture sector remains un-devastated. The main agricultural import from Canada is grain. The EU sends wine and cheese back. Everyone is happy.

I remember reading only a few months ago that 10 EU member states had still not ratified CETA - including France. So clearly not happy.

sleepwouldbenice · 10/03/2025 19:20

I don't think he had much choice but to come out fighting

It's bad enough what Trump has done to Europe/uk/ Ukraine

But Canada is different again. Threatening them with tariffs and the 51st state and belittling comments like Govenor, etc..... they haven't really got much choice but to fight back. I do remember Carney after Brexit. He saw the car crash and calmly did what he could to mitigate it. .... then worked for the environment

He might not be the man for Canada on the wider front, don't know his policies. But the size of his brain on the economic front compared to Trump is simply laughable

HangryLilacGoose · 10/03/2025 19:20

Carney looks like a great candidate. I'd have far more confidence in him to stand up to Trump generally, not least in a trade war, than I would for his mini-Trump opponent.

God the opposite. Don't think people understand how much more of a financial shitshow brexit could have been

Is it compulsory to be devastatingly attractive if you want to lead Canada? I have had a serious crush on Mark Carney since his BoE days. (Apologies for such a shallow contribution to this thread)

Not, it’s not compulsory. But a cool nickname helps.

Trump has done one thing for me.

Proved that karma doesn't exist.

At one point North America was like a GC cover. Obama, Trudeau and Peña Nieto

<fans self>

Back to proper discourse... Carney needs to win an election so he's talking big. Once he's won I assume his very boring, very Canadian economics will prevail.

What was it Carney actually did to prevent Breixt turning into a "financial shitshow" ?

I remember Carney as a doom-monger on Brexit, who kept revising his forecasts - he didn't seem very calming to me, e.g.

Some of Carney's more recent interventions have been nonsense - this article was written by a pro-remain/rejoin economist (2022);

Why Brexit has been far less damaging than Mark Carney suggests.

The former Bank of England governor’s claim that the UK economy is now less than 70 per cent the size of Germany’s is nonsense.

It was a financial shitshow anyway. He prevented it from being an even shittier one.

I thought he was a Tory pick. George Osbourne if I remember rightly.

Most of them seem pretty useless to me so at least if you vote for the hot fit ones you're getting something out of it.

Fans of Canada's most popular sports drown out the national anthem of the united states at a match.

Shops in Ontario are removing american goods from their shelves.

Canadians are standing proud together. Go Canada, standing up to the bullies from america.

Harrasing Jewish students, blocking them from campus for refusing to renounce their faith and openly supporting Hamas isn't really a "protest" now is it.

Neither is people smashing up the Capitol after a legitimate election result they didn't like, I guess! 🤷‍♀️

HangryLilacGoose · 10/03/2025 20:01

Whoever ends up as PM after the election, I think they may have more leverage than one would have thought in negotiations with the US. Their stock market is taking an absolute battering, growth predictions are now showing shrinkage, and the risk of recession has spiked.

This is all directly contrary to Trump's campaign promises.

Clavinova · 10/03/2025 20:34

Not forgetting this!

October 2023 - Carney praises Reeves as ‘a serious economist’ as opposition party vies for power.

Former Bank of England Governor Mark Carney endorsed Labour's "serious" finance spokesperson Rachel Reeves, offering a boost to the opposition party as it hopes to win over business and form the next U.K. government.

In a video message to Labour's annual conference, Carney, who served as the U.K.'s top central banker from 2013 to 2020, heaped praise on Reeves and said it was "beyond time" her plans were put "into action."

CJsGoldfish · 10/03/2025 20:36

Isn't the Trump administration now clamping down on protest? While also protecting freedom of expression? So confusing
He pulled all of Columbia's funding because of the student protests and 'disappeared' the lawful American citizen who was in charge. Dude has a green card and an 8mth pregnant wife and was taken by HS. Last I read, it wasn't clear where he was taken.

Harrasing Jewish students, blocking them from campus for refusing to renounce their faith and openly supporting Hamas isn't really a "protest" now is it
How do you explain Westboro? That particular brand of hate was/is legally protected but ANY student protests will now have students expelled in the case of US born citizens or deported if born elsewhere. Unless white of course. They can likely stay 🙄

CJsGoldfish · 10/03/2025 20:39

Now the Ontario premier is slapping a 25% tariff on electricity it supplies to US states 😆
Canada rocks!

How did you vote, just out of curiosity?

It was quantative wading and dropping interest rates btw

IvyLeagueSnob · 10/03/2025 20:50

Poor Canada, they’ve now got the worst person to clean up a decade long slump and failures by that pathetic creep Trudeau. An unelected WEF globalist with no parliamentary seat, pushed by the elites. Yeah the Canadian people are gonna love this. I hope Trump doubles down before carney ruins Canada like Trudeau.
